@Liv from my experience, it's pausing the game to make stuff easier (like controlling LBLJs in SM64)

Edit: This thread is finally sticky :) Hopefully new players get to read it.

I think I've seen this question before and it's a pretty good one so I think it should be added. https://www.speedrun.com/speedrunning/thread/m8jw6

Sadly due to a silent update with a 1k character limit, this post won't be updated for the foreseeable future.

@1 The character limit has been lifted, so Sizzyl should be able to edit his stickied posts again.

how to get a 1 letter name

The only way to get a 1-3 letter username would be to get the account from someone or to buy it, else there is no way of obtaining those anymore.
@Sizzyl I think you should add this to your post, seems like it's a question that people will probably ask more in the future. While on this topic maybe you should also clarify that usernames can't be claimed anymore if:

 • they start with _
 • they are an inappropiate and/or explicit word
 • they contain . | @ or -
 • they are longer than 20 characters and shorter than 4 characters
 • they contain illegal characters or symbols.

First time seeing this. Overall, nice! Some thoughts:
What are some good games to begin speedrunning with
This answer kinda bugs me. "A game you like" tends to be the go-to for this, but a lot of the time it's kinda... unhelpful, honestly. Also not sure how I feel about pointing people towards popular/Mario games, more developed games may be more beginner-friendly, but competing with hundreds or thousands of other people can also be very intimidating when you're just trying to figure out if you even like speedrunning.

Not sure what exactly I would change from what's already there, but I would add something about, just, watching runs. Either by just searching up games you think might be interesting directly, or looking at something like the Streams page (feel like people forget this exists sometimes) to find new things you may not have thought you'd be interested in.
Can I be a mod for (insert game title here)?
I'd recommend leading into what you already have with "Most games are not looking to add new moderators", 99% of the time someone reaches out to me about becoming a mod we're not even considering adding anybody. Also, you have a very similar question and answer towards the bottom, with "How do I become mod for an existing game?", should probably merge these.
How do I record my game... recording with a phone is ALWAYS allowed
I don't know about always. It certainly should always be allowed, but some communities are pretty stingy about video quality.
How do I time my runs?
Minor thing, but it's called LiveSplit, not 'livesplits'. Could also have that link directly to the LiveSplit website. I would also mention LiveSplit One (it's browser-based, so very accessible to everyone, and unlike FramePerfect doesn't have paid features).
pausing is generally... not [allowed in] IGT runs (In-game time)
I wouldn't even bother saying this, this is far too much of a generalization to be useful info. Also not sure why turbo controllers and pausing the game are lumped into the same answer, those really have nothing to do with each other.

About pausing games during a speedrun: I watched speedruns of few games with ingame timer, where pausing isn't just allowed, it is also recommended as a speed-strat.

Due to an oversight by the games' developers, while the game is paused some elements of it still move (like moving platforms or enemies). So you can alter the game normal cycles by pausing the game, and the IGT won't advance.

I also moderate 2 games with the same principle. In those cases, pausing/no pausing is separated to different categories.

(Of course, if a game has RTA timing, it's not relevant because the timer keeps going while you pause the game.)

So I agree with what @ShikenNuggets said - the comment about pausing is generalized, each game works differently.

@Hi I'm not too sure if asking about < 4 letter or special usernames is really worth adding to the FAQs, I've only seen a handful of people ask about it

@ShikenNuggets
but I would add something about, just, watching runs
Your point about recommended games is solid, I'll definitely add that watching runs is a good way to find a game you want to try speedrunning (as that's also how I started running).
you have a very similar question and answer towards the bottom, with "How do I become mod for an existing game?", should probably merge these
Not sure how I missed that, I'll combine them and add the point about new mods as it's something I thought I included.
It certainly should always be allowed, but some communities are pretty stingy about video quality.
I've never heard of any community banning phone recordings. Sometimes they have to be WELL MADE phone recordings, but they're allowed nonetheless pretty much everywhere I've went. Ig I'll add a disclaimer to that, that's kinda weird.

About that livesplit section, that's a phenomenal suggestion, I never heard about LiveSplit One, and I'll fix the typo I made.
Also not sure why turbo controllers and pausing the game are lumped into the same answer, those really have nothing to do with each other
@Oreo321 this also answers your post. Honestly not sure why I put those together either, I'll split them apart. As for the pausing thing, I actually disagree with you here, I think most games that use IGT generally ban pausing even if it's not stated in the rules, although I should probably mention that it's not always and that game rules should be checked. There's obviously some exceptions like what Oreo stated, but most of those execptions they're stated in the rules or even as Oreo said
I also moderate 2 games with the same principle. In those cases, pausing/no pausing is separated to different categories.
In which case it should be very obvious that pausing IS allowed in those cases. Overall I'd say a hefty majority of games don't allow pausing in IGT runs, although there's many exceptions to that, so I guess I'll try to make that clear.
