Some notes about the rules:

I'll admit I did not go and check whether he was still mod when I brought it up again, I was not expecting a change in the staff. Regardless, in trying to prompt his response, my comments were more snide than they needed to be. Sorry.

To get back on topic, I agree that it can make it easier for the mods, and as you noted, my opinion on whether mods should rely on the timer is probably not the same as yours. But yeah, they're unpaid volunteers, and if a timer can help, then it's appropriate to state that the timer is strongly preferred, which you have done.

As for your second point, it's not exceedingly difficult for more savvy runners, but it's still extra hoops to jump through. After streaming and highlighting a run from the ps4 to Twitch, there are a few ways to edit a timer onto the video. Here's the easiest I know of: Watch your own VOD in full HD, capture that in OBS, add a timer to the scene, stream it again in HD, then re-highlight. That requires a PC and connection that can stream in HD while watching an HD video. That's a tall order IMO. Alternatively, you could download the vod, use OBS to record it locally with a timer, then reupload it somewhere. Or you could download the vod, edit it with video software, render and upload that. (My point is, any way you cut it, the extra steps aren't trivial and constitute a barrier imo).

As for your third point on the merits of showing a timer, I don't think this applies since the rules days nothing about splits, let alone standardized splits.

Other than that, I think we're on the same page.

I agree. With the splits point I made, it wouldn’t have to be splits. It’s easy for Bobby, Ninnyz, and I to skip to where the split normally ends, even without splits on the timer, and see that the time makes sense for the split they theoretically just finished. For example, if someone’s time through Valus is only 1:00 on the external timer, something is wrong.

This is why some sort of external timer is infinitely easier on mods. Now we’ll have to have the video up and running for the length of the run in order to verify it, instead of skipping to the end of each colossi and keeping track of the time in between to make sure it’s fine.

(I'm struck by the notion that mods and verifiers should not have to watch the whole video.

Then again, some boards don't require video or verification at all, so it's not like you would be way off the norm. I'm just surprised.

If you do anticipate a surge in popularity, I'm sure you'll be discussing that process over the next little while.)

That being said, is an on-screen timer better at helping you verify than a video's tracking time?

And if you're encouraging players to edit a timer onto the video after the recording, that's gotta add some degree of uncertainty to the accuracy or credibility of the video-edited timer :/

I mean I watch the runs that would be higher up on the leaderboard fully. I have not and would not watch an over 2 hour run in it's entirety probably. That's a lot of time and I guarantee most communities are the same. I don't want to compare this community to a way more popular one, but runs for Odyssey were approved after not being watched if they were longer than a certain time. I don't see the problem if the run isn't really super competitive. Especially if I'm still checking the time for each of the 16/17 splits.

Also if someone sends us a VOD and the run doesn't start immediately it can be more difficult to use the time signatures of the video. Regardless, it's a moot point. The rule was changed and it'll probably take longer for runs to get verified due to the fact that the entire VOD has to be watched and over 2 hour runs aren't easy to watch at times.

That's your prerogative.

As for VODs instead of highlights, on top of the amount start time issue, they expire. Twitch VODs are awful as proof, especially when creating a highlight on Twitch is trivial. If someone did that in a game I moderate, I'd more than likely contact them and ask for a highlight instead.

Alright this discussion is over. The rules have been changed so if you wish to run the game feel free to do so.

Not quite "NEWS", but people asked for better visibility for them and since we currently have no way of actually adding a TAB, here is another way to find them :)
