Well dude, if you skip a sequence, then thats just the way speed running goes... i think it should be allowed. i don't see it as any different than any other sequence skip in a speed run.. thats what this run needs is ways to skip this crap haha.. thats the whole point, is beating the game asap..

make another category for cut scene skip runs.. turbo and legit xD

sorry if you guys disagree.. but to me this is how speed running should be. any cheating you can do to save a second is what you do.. whether it be a glitch or save warps or just a straight up wall clip.. we optimize the crap out of the items in dragoon to run it fast.. but we don't really have many broken things in this game to optimize (if there is any, it's a ps1 game so there is probably something) witch is probably where we might find more sequence skips or glitches in the future.. when i'm finished learning the whole run that's what i'm going to focus on.. just trying to find broken stuff to skip anything at all. I probably won't find anything because the game hates it when you skip things... but it's pixels on paintings so there might be something exploitable

Yeah!, what Wafer said! :D

This is different because it involves manipulating the hardware you are running on. The fmv is not skipped because you found a glitch or exploit ingame but you just open the tray at a time you shouldnt to break the data stream. That of course is bad. If you allow that you can also allow booting the game over Action Replay and inducing cheat codes or putting different hardware in the console with the attitude "any cheat that saves a second is ok". Nope Im against cheating there.

Deathtome was obviously making a joke I am surprised people actually want to do that.

i'm not really for manipulating hardware or AR. But i really would love to see huge sequence skips in this game.

Then find a way to do it without external influence. Also fmvs are doing very little to the total time of the game. You have a 10-11h game with a few minutes of fmvs, it doesnt do anything relative to the length. 90% of the run you are skipping textboxes.

Its not worth it to open Pandoras Box for this, the run is still equally long and painful.

I don't really think this makes sense, the ideas behind rules and categories is that they are community decided and often follow the premise of manipulating the game within the game and it's hardware (even choosing different hardwares like Ps1 vs PS2 as external boons); you're trying to make it into a slippery slope argument but I'd heavily disagree that'd you'd find people outright actually trying to externally cheat or manipulate game mechanics which fundamentally alter the gameplay itself. Skipping a cutscene is small potatoes even like you said. I forget if they allow that in FF7, might have been an old or different category I'm thinking of but if they do I know there are no action replays, there's a very stark difference in bringing in outside programs.

If people think it goes against the spirit of the run that's fine, I absolutely understand the idea of not interrupting the data stream it makes sense, I just think the argument here is a bit fallacious/illogical. Not wanting to skip cutscenes because it's mandated in the category is fine as long as it's just what the category itself is. Either way small deal, and the video itself is quite entertaining hahah.

Yeah the text boxes are the problem. All the damn conversation in that game. Have you ever had anything weird happen or glitch out on you while playing? I saw a video of a guy that fell through the floor at the black Castle on disc 1

Yeah definitely no action replay crap. But I would be down for whatever a stock PS2 and anything game mechanics will let you do. But interrupting the data stream is different.. I know of a speed run that requires opening and closing the disc tray to manipulate the loading mechanics (completely different scenario all together but this video makes me think of that run) I don't know of any that allow what deathtome did here though.

I can tell you that opening and closing the disc tray will allow me to beat FF7 two hours faster than anyone else. LMAO. :) They banned it so fast in FF7.

Here is a video in case you want to see it. Look at what happens if you open the disc tray with a chocobo and insert the wrong disc. And also skipping/manipulating wrong cutscenes to play is possible with disc swapping.

This run was done LEGIT (if opening the disc tray is alright). It can be done on PS1 or PS2 without any gameshark or memory cards.

You can obtain Knights of the Round with the airship if you just open the disc tray for instance. Look at this! I didn't cheat here? All I did was open the disc tray. ;)

bwhahahaha! oh my god that is beast af! When i went through that game it kept freezing on disc 3 so i had to put in another disc to get it to load. I read that the whole game is on all three discs but they each play different sequences and cut scenes.. I never thought about the broken stuff you could do with that though. that is amazing. Do you wish they made this a category?

Antarctica

I knew it was going to be banned. I just showed them what I could do if opening the disc tray was allowed. ;) They added a lot of rules after I posted this video. Start up FF7 with Disc 2 and insert Disc 1 before you press NEW GAME and you will skip or get a lot of cutscenes. Watch the beginning of my video to see what happens with intro cutscene. LMAO. Non-existent with audio glitches. I broke the game. Got Knights of The Round without a chocobo and Mime materia for the final bosses of the game. So easy. All in 5½ hours. :)

Those vids are pretty great hahah. It really is fascinating how things like this affect different games, can be quite unpredictable.
