Vote for GCN Emu category

Well, if this was a category before then why did we even have to argue and fight for this in the first place? I'm rather confused as to how all this unraveled. I'm just trying to help get data collected since there's literally zero to be found in this community. I'm not gonna try to discredit Sovietboss' findings, but I'd be interested to see how much faster Dolphin vs GC/Wii for Wii is down to the details with actual load times frame by frame in the future. I'm not trying to say what I'm doing is the only way this category gets added. I'm only doing it, because no one else is wants to spend their time examining a game one frame at a time. It doesn't hurt to have information in regards to this.

That is all I'm striving for in this community. I feel it's lacking when matters like this pop up. PS1 emulators have proven to be able to compete with official Sony consoles as mentioned before by Carci, hence why they're allowed. And, yes, I understand stability is the most important aspect of an emulator. This is the main reason why I've been going out of my way to monitor the differences between the two.

I feel like no one's even bothered to look at the Mega Man X4 load times that Lim and I posted, because that is exactly what I am using as my basis for all this. I don't care how time consuming this all is, because I figured that this would help our cause to have GC emu established.

Anyway, I do agree that the more postponed this category is from being added, the more likely the demand for it that was once there will be gone. If this category to be added, I would recommend trying the latest three stable versions of Dolphin. 4.0.2, 4.0.1 and 4.0 are the ones I've used with minor issues like crashing which needs tweaking in order to fix that issue. I cannot speak on the behalf of the other versions such as the revisions.

As for rules, the display input in Dolphin is terrible, but you can enable if you choose to do so and I'm sure there are other display input programs out there. FPS counter/lag frame counter is optional. I'll post pictures of the settings I use.

I use these settings for Dolphin 4.0.2, 4.0.1 and 4.0.

Options > Config - You can adjust the FPS here. Auto adjusts to whatever region the game is while Audio utilizes the DSP to fix audio clicks, but can cause other noise depending on the game. The limit by FPS box does what it says. https://i.gyazo.com/ccb4cdd96e652607fda3480e9ee3f62d.png

Audio (I have to switch between HLE and LLE sometimes in conjunction with the graphics renderer) https://i.gyazo.com/035933d91b111750cf51a3bd8d8d577b.png

Graphic Settings (General) - I've used D3D9 for the longest. I thought Open GL was unusable for me, but I completed a run using it. I haven't used D3D11 yet. Auto adjust window is something I have set since I don't want to accidentally stretch the window beyond the actual resolution. I wouldn't recommend this if you use the default resolution settings. Your window will be tiny and it hurts the eyes. https://i.gyazo.com/bc454e612ce3581dece82b4bd1384e4c.png

Graphic Settings (Enhancements) - I would recommend not messing with the resolution in-game. Do it beforehand to avoid any crashing. I personally use 1.5x Native and used Multiples of 640x548 before. The higher the resolution the more performance required. Everything else is default. https://i.gyazo.com/ec749a645fe13db174224c6277334fc8.png

Graphic Settings (Hacks) - I leave it at default settings. https://i.gyazo.com/a766230a7f07edf395ee471f99ba665f.png

Graphic Settings (Advanced) - Again, settings are default. Display input can be found here if you want to enable it. https://i.gyazo.com/311efc5d90b7fb36cc4ce03595ec14a1.png

Input display, lag counter and FPS display look like this. Input display shows your button commands when pressed (not shown in picture) and the latter are analog coordinates for the left and c stick when you use them. https://i.gyazo.com/c4c98ca53d5d041f313c668c51980f2d.png

"Well, if this was a category before then why did we even have to argue and fight for this in the first place? I'm rather confused as to how all this unraveled."

I totally agree with this point but back on the wiki things were different because categories/runs could be added by anyone. If it was a well and truly dead category that someone added that only themselves were running then it probably wouldn't have stayed. We had more space to work with too, on here we have very few mods being active as furry said but that may or may not be there fault. (i honestly preferred the wiki because you didn't really have to wait for someone to add/verify something)

I think when categories are asked to be added people take one look at the state of the leader boards and just want to say no, run something else. That was my mind set for a long time too i don't deny it. But i changed the Revelations leader board recently taking advantage of Misc categories and variables and it looks much cleaner and easier to follow. Full game boards would work for Re1, 2, 3 too if enough time was put into making the switch. it would mean though that by default your desired category "WR" may not be 1st place until you set the variable to filter the runs you want to see. More categories could be added to the variable without clutter. Less hassle and drama for everyone!

@AltriaAvalon i respect the time and effort you are putting into researching this, i for one would like to see your findings. i wasn't meaning in any way that what you are doing is pointless. I'm also about to try out your emulator settings as they are slightly different to mine. i'll post back if they work.

Good Luck with your research ect. RaccAttack ~

Yeah, I feel there needs to be a reform with the moderation here. It's starting to become more difficult to come to a decision as community without moderators working alongside. Not saying they're not doing their job, but I agree with Furry. We can't expect to rely on 1-2 mods to pitch in all the time. It'd be a shame to see this opportunity go to waste as I really want this category up. I'm simply doing something on the side to have as reference and factual data. It's a lengthy process to go through every area one frame at a time WutFace

And, I apologize if I misread your post, Steven. I've been caught up doing this for awhile and with the whole category being stalled, it made me wonder whether or not I should continue my work. The most difficult part is being able to get a hold of console runs. I was fortunate to get one from Bawk. I do intend to continue doing this across the classic REs when I get the chance even if it's not needed. I'm just really interested in numbers lol.

Hi there, I've been following this thread with interest the past few weeks and I'm a little confused with the lack of progress that's being made.

What, exactly, is preventing the category from being added to the leaderboards? AltriaAvalon, unless I've misunderstood, is trying to achieve similar load times on Dolphin to the actual Gamecube console, which is all very well and good (and not uninteresting in and of itself), but I really don't see the relevance as the emulator categories for other consoles aren't bound by this unrealistic restriction?

Considering the support for this category was so overwhelming (greater than 16 to 1) I would have expected any obstacles to its addition to have been overcome by the many people eager to post runs to the leaderboards yet we sit here, over three weeks later, seemingly no closer to adding the category for no clear reason.

@The dude It does have relevancy to this since the reason why emulators for the other categories are allowed is that they're able to compete with Sony hardware. I'm simply trying to provide data to back the claim that Dolphin can be on par with Gamecube/Wii. I've already noticed time differences with the tests I've conducting now that I've finished doing the math for both my own Dolphin run and Bawk's Gamecube run.

The main issue here is the lack of participation in making this category work. We have the votes, but the lack of involvement in testing and researching to ensure Dolphin is a stable and playable platform for players is what's caused this stall. I know what I'm doing wouldn't help much since the data I have is revolved around load times and not establishing rules and recommended versions of Dolphin to be used. As I said before, I've had experience running it for quite some time even with major issues like crashes, but I can run the emulator for a long time nonetheless.

I know it's asking for too much, but if anyone is willing to spare their time and share results with Dolphin it would be appreciated.

I also ask if anyone would be willing to send me their own Dolphin runs without cutscene skips. It doesn't have to be everyone, but it would be nice to work with other runs to see any disparity across versions and such.

Ireland

Well in all honesty, it should have been tested before we had the vote. And the lack of participation shows that a lot of people don't actually care about this category. They just voted yes for more categories.

Spain

I really appreciate the work Roofress is doing with the emulator research, but again I'm afraid there will be few people actually running Dolphin after all.

There's no category yet, but you people could start to do runs to test the stability. Again, no category in here is translated into "do NOT run that version/mode of the game at all". I run PS3 from time to time even knowing it's not a popular way to play the RE1-3 games, but hell I don't care, sometimes I just want to run weird slow versions to remember how strange this game feels just by noticing different loading times.

I wish we could migrate all the RE boards into a single merged Full Game Leaderboard like, for example, the Code Veronica one so we could have literally every version possible there. PC will be the first version showing in that board? Sure, it makes sense, the game loads faster than on consoles, it's not the player's fault! So if you start to get used to the drop down menus to select X platform I think EVERYONE would be happy that way.

Ireland

I agree with xenix. The CVX boards are the cleanest looking in the series and maybe they should be the same for RE1-3

England

^ i mentioned this on the previous page. It would work but is anyone willing to make it happen is the question

Michigan, USA

I get we're kind of waiting on roos load tests but this board was decided to be given to us before he was even doing it, so why is it taking so long to just put it up? Seems pretty absurd. Me and others have been running it with plenty of stability for weeks so why isn't it up already?

England

the leader board was added when the vote ended, not long after that it was taken down by request of people that were going to run it. Until further testing has been done.

Ireland

Why is this still even a thing? This should have been done before we had the vote not after it.

England

I'm not commenting for my own benefit, i just want to show Roo the support he deserves. He has done a lot to better the understanding Dolphin.

Like Steven said "the leader board was added when the vote ended, not long after that it was taken down by request of people that were going to run it. Until further testing has been done".

That request was made by the same people that wanted the category in the first place. We could have left it there, but we decided it would be appropriate to address the concerns of stability first. Hence the removal.

The testing is being done before it is reviewed and added. If the vote didn't have a majority, there'd be no point of doing the testing. If the results prove it's not stable, It wont be added regardless.

I wouldn't worry Trance, everything is being considered to best benefit everyone.
