New and struggling to decide on a game (introduction)

Hello, Im Kara, I also go by GoodGirlKara. Im a huge speedrunning fan and have loved watching runs for years. I caught the bug for speedrunning when I accidentally got a 3rd place time on a mirrors edge catalyst time trial during the beta. I missed a jump and when I respawned, I was significantly closer to the end of the trial than I was before. so, I literally lucked into a 3rd place time with a glitch I had no clue how to replicate LMAO... im sure I have that screenshot still saved somewhere.

I have finally decided to sit down and start speedrunning myself. like a legitimate attempt at it. I however am at a loss for what game to choose. I know I wanna do a survival horror game as I have always loved playing RE and Dead space so much. however, I don't know what to choose. RE4 seems super hard to learn, dead space 2 has a whole bunch of things you need to install to skip stuff like the intro, RE2R seems too competitive for me to do well in. To top it all off all the tutorials or guides I have found are playing on the hardest difficulties and I don't feel like im ready to run a super unforgiving game yet. I just want to get my first game under my belt as I really want to speedrun Calisto Protocol, Dead Space Remake, and RE4 Remake when they come out.

I just feel super intimidated on starting and dont really know how to start. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Okay... you appear to be bothered about the required skills & competition. So let's start with a different Mindset. Whichever game you choose, expect to miserably fail. Expect to not pick up key items. Expect to forget which way to go. Expect to die. Expect to run out of ammonition. But also expect to finish this run. Expect to improvise to save yourself. And learn from your mistakes afterwards.

When it comes to tutorials or guides, don't follow them Kara. Try to figure stuff out on your own first, then optimize your own route. And from here onwards, give yourself a Goal. Once you achieved it. You'll know if you wanna keep learning more about the game to push yourself. Or be satisfied & move on.

(sounds like awful advice...)

Im new to the site so I hope you see this as I have no clue how to tag you in the reply. This does help though. Im a super competitive person and I have always pushed myself to extreme standards very quickly. I have been playing re4 and learning some routes and tips but been finding myself not having that much fun even if I am doing fairly well for someone who's never done speed running before. i find myself incapable of finishing my runs and have been resetting and practicing portions instead. I think im doing it wrong.

I think I will try out your advice on just learning a game and playing through it for fun and trying to improve my times myself, before learning other people's routes and comparing myself to world record paced runs with all the little tricks that take months to learn.

@GoodGirlKara there is a guide on how to @ usernames in my stickied thread on The Site. Although doing this doesn't notify them https://www.speedrun.com/the_site/thread/0s65s#ch7_Username_tagging
When it comes to tutorials or guides, don't follow them Kara.
I'm not a fan of this part (in a general sense). I think I get what you mean -> that one shouldn't pressure oneself to learn all the (hard) tricks when you don't have a clue yet. Or in the case of guides maybe being outdated or hard to follow to learn by oneself. But imo especially for a newcomer it can be nice to have guidance. If there is a beginner-friendly guide, I'd go for that one. Even better would be to reach out to the community on their discord or on the forum to ask how they recommend starting.

I for myself have a very positive example of a guide where I could start my run blind and finish the game without having to restart or give up.

yeah, I started just learning how to do dead space 2 and it's been a lot of fun. but playing dead space 2 is always fun it's like my 3rd favorite game of all time. im really just excited to run calisto protocol and learn the route along side the community. legit my favorite speedrunning experience this year was watching the progression of the elden ring any%. seeing a new game get destroyed and done faster day by day was amazing

good luck! I hope you were able to find the solution. Do not stress
