GTA:SA making 25/26fps mandatory for leaderboards submissions?

I'd like to end this age old discussion once and for all. I don't see any compelling reasons for allowing the frame rate to be limited to 30 via an external program. Only using the in-game frame limiter would make things simpler for everyone and everybody would be on a level playing field. It was never allowed for good reasons in the first place.

I would personally vote for banning 30fps from leaderboards submissions.

Thoughts?

I agree wholeheartedly.

There is no good reason whatsoever to tolerate 30fps.

As one of the people who originally argued FOR 30 FPS, I apologize for making things annoyingly complicated for every SA runner for bad reasons. Just showing that the FPS Limiter in game is on with every run would be much easier, and would reduce the amount of variables a run can have which can impact it (E.G. Hardware dependency).

While I still believe the game should still be played at 30 FPS (or higher) for a better playing experience (MTA, Casual etc), it shouldn't be a part of speedrunning.

So yeah, I agree

I will have to agree with you. You had to use the frame limiter in both III and VC so there's no reason to allow anything else in SA.

It's clear that there are differences between 25 and 30 fps in pretty much all areas including driving, swimming and even shooting speed. How they actually affect a run is still somewhat unclear though and probably always will be, since it's hard to test, so it would make sense that everyone plays on the same in-game defined fps.

The fact that an external program is necessary to play on 30 fps makes it even less attractive for speedrunning.

Agreed.

@bang the reason for SA to allow external frame limitation is because the internal one limits at 25 fps, whereas the VC & III ones limit at 30. BORT

Fridge, there were more reasons than that, the massive "discussion" we had over this is buried in the SDA thread somewhere. But until someone actually wants to support those old arguments there's no point going back.

All the reasons were bad anyway

I think San Andreas should not be played altogether, so that everyone limits the framerate to 0.

On a more serious note, the effects of 30fps vs 25fps are not understood well enough, so it's best to go with the safe option (namely 25) and eliminate one variable.

@ceilingfridge that's not rly a reason to allow it

IT'S ILLEGAL TO GO AGAINST SDA'S WISHES. THEY ARE THE LAW

@bang It's one of the few stupid reasons why SA "should" allow 30 fps.

Agreed. Do it. Remove all current 30fps times from the leaderboard and place them in an achieve tab separate from the current any% leaderboard

@RunnerHAWORTH: Or, you know, keep them as a legacy run as we always have done? It's not like people who run when the rules were different can go back into the past and change what they did. :P

Bulgaria

I support this as well, 5fps does make quite a bit of a difference. The effects of 25 vs 30 are quite understandable and unfair if you run some tests, simple things like markers triggering earlier on a higher framerate can mean several seconds of advantage solely by that.

With a big change such as this, I feel legacy runs should be avoided. We want to avoid stagnation in the category for those who have ran the game at 30fps. Those times already posted may become unreachable for them while playing at a lower fps. I'm sure Tirean will agree that his LS times in an any% run will suffer.

I've ran the game at both framerates and I feel like I cheated when I played at the higher fps. Of course, this is my own opinion and my own preference but the game became easier and quicker in every aspect (except swimming) and keeping those times as 'legacy runs' could put off previous runners from doing attempts.

England

Agreed.

The current rules say 'The Frame Limiter needs to be set to ON in the game options or the frame rate limited to a maximum of 30 fps.', which implies you could have any frame rate as long as it's under 30. So it would technically be possible to play at 1FPS, or use the external program to vary the FPS as you go through the run.

Just keep it simple, fair and consistent and use the in-game limiter.

Rip the top 3 times though, congrats CyberThunder on wr

Maybe make a section for old "legacy" runs so people can still see them or something? I dunno really.

Does anyone know how laws work in this regard? Kappa

Changes to the GTA:SA leaderboard

The GTA:SA community has been deteriorating over a long period of time. Many top runners are not currently present on the leaderboard. This issue has not been seriously addressed yet, but an attempt will be made to remedy it now.
