(Not banned anymore) Why are ISO loaders banned?

Legit question. I was just wondering since they don't seem to provide much of an advantage, not even at loading times. Game is running on native hardware, and on Wii U they are loaded as Wii VC titles, which run on the included vWii mode. What's the reason for them being banned?

I guess its because ISO Loaders might have a little speed advantage because they dont have to get the stuff 'off the disk' but I might be wrong

Dolphin has speed advantages and is accepted

Yea but I'd say that an ISO Loader that runs on a console is still a diff. thing than Emu

Mexico

Yes obviously they are different, but being different isnt a good reason to be banned, since dolphin is different from console aswell

An ISO loader isn't an emulator. It doesn't have any clear advantages other than allowing more people to run the game without having to rely on an emulator or hunt the disc down. The only thing that would need to get added to the rules, if accepted, is to show the settings and verify the "Fast Disc Reading" option (which allows for faster loading times) is disabled, before booting the game. Personally I use Nintendont on Wii U and it doesn't seem to provide any important advantages.

We could look into the time differences and maybe do conversions for ISO loaders?

Just an idea, we still don't have an answer

I can see it being allowed under the emulator section, but it would require clear defined rules similar to emulator runs. I wouldn't know but playing a GCN game via means other than a disk just doesn't sit right from a competition standpoint.

But it's not emulation

Emulators for colo currently cant fairly compete against console, iso loaders would have to be under the emu section. Having multiple emulators aloud I would be fine with, since its not like dolphin can even fairly compete against itself. Its too computer dependent, I lose like 30 seconds when I try and purify anything due to lag. At least with nintendont on wii its on the same hardware. Don't know how much wii u nintendont differs to wii.

I've been looking into it, and in some games, Nintendont is actually slower than the OG disc using an SD card (it might depend on the SD card read speed). Hell, even a burned disc is slower than the OG disc. Nintendont on Wii U boots in vWii mode, like it would a Virtual Console game. One could also launch from the vWii menu so it would be the same as a Wii, wouldn't it?

Nintendon't is banned from being used in most communities since I believe it plays the GCN games in Wii mode. Any form of playing the game outside of the actual disk through original means is going to be classified as emulation.

It shouldn't be classified as emulation, because it isn't. Not even on Wii U. Look at Super Mario Galaxy's leaderboards, all the top times run on WiiVC. Shouldn't this count as VC too, even tho it's not official? The Wii is just an overclocked Gamecube after all On a side note, here's something interesting. Nintendont knows when it's running from the Wii U menu as Wii VC and from the vWii HB channel.

If in theory, load times are the main issue, what do you guys think about using something like this?

The top times are on WiiU VC, the game was released by nintendo for that platform. If Nintendo released Colosseum for virtual console then it would be different. As they've only released it physically on a disk that is made to be run on gamecube and wii, anything else would be considered emulation.

To chime in on this 3 month old discussion (lol), ISO loaders being considered as emulation should be more blamed on SRC limitations if anything. The only thing SRC lets the leaderboards auto hide is emulator, you can't do the same for other variables. So if ISO loaders were allowed, you would either have to go attach the emu label on them so they are auto hidden, or you would have to go something along the lines on how the 3DS Pokemon games handle NTR (separate subcategory that groups emulator and NTR together, for this case it would be emu/iso loader). Really, any time it is said that iso loaders are "considered emulation" it's not literally considered emulation, but rather their place on the leaderboard would be the same as emulator runs (ie hidden or separated from main runs).
