I already know half the answers will be "Whatever you enjoy", but I am new to speed running. I have a relatively okay pc laptop with a poor graphics card. I was looking for some cheap (maybe free) games that would be good to start with.
Currently I am running PokeyPoke. Not very well known, very fun platformer.

"I already know half the answers will be "Whatever you enjoy"" The reason that most of the answers will be that is because it's the best way to get into speedrunning. Check out the runs for some of your favorite games (or even just games that you happen to own) and see if anything looks interesting to you. If nothing seems interesting to you then you can also try browsing the streams page and watch some other people perform runs live, maybe something there will catch your interest.
How are you with emulators? A Game Boy/NES and even SNES emulator shouldn't strain your PC much. If that's feasible, I'd recommend Kirby's Dream Land(Game Boy), any of the Mega Man series (NES) and Super Mario World(SNES). A google search for GB/NES/SNES emulators should answer any questions you may have about them. A run on any of those games will take you (once you practice and depending on the game/category) between 12-40 minutes. If you have any other questions please ask, and welcome to the crew!
