Pretty good reason for it to be banned (ds on left, emu on right) ^ Excuse the lack of effort gone into that video.
At the moment you can submit runs on emulator, but they wont show on the leaderboard by default (only if you choose "platforms & emulator"). As for whether the are completely banned idk... there's not really been much of a discussion about it. But its not really fair to compare emulator times to ds times.
Aside from whether it is allowed or not, there's 1 other big reason why I wouldn't want to play on emulator... the camera controls. Camera controls are on the touch screen so there's no easy way to move the camera in anyway other than locking it behind you (excluding using a lua script to bind a button to pressing the touch screen in a certain place, which is kinda cheating?? idk)
May I ask which DS emulator was shown in the comparison? I might be able to try other DS emulators and find one that has slower load times.
It was desmume (either 0.9.11 or 0.9.8, not really sure). If you want to run on emulator then nothing is going to stop you, it just won't display by default on the leaderboards. To be honest, the loading times are probably about the same as Wii-U VC, and if we allow that then it is probably fair to allow emulator too (although whether VC is allowed is a completely different discussion as it is not available on US consoles yet, and the majority of runners are from the US, so I think it would be kind of shitty to allow it for that reason, but at the same time it is a legit release of the game so it is also kind of shitty to ban it) :p
