Mister FPGA

I know its not on the supported emulator list but if there is anything I can do to help get it there let me know.

I asked a few months back in the discord if MISTer would be allowed to run the game and basically got ignored altogether despite a few others also wanting to have the conversation as well. It was kind of frustrating to say the least. I hope they get it figured out because it would definitely bring more runners to the game.

its the most available lag free option for players wanting to play NES at this point on real hardware. I think it would help a lot of NES communities in my opinion.

Not to mention that MiSTer's cores are as close as can be to the real thing in terms of cycle accuracy. Meaning: identical.

But to be fair, I've been met with this sort of resistance from communities that didn't know about it and wouldn't bother looking into it because "it wasn't worth it", or because "it's just emulation by another name" and that by this virtue alone, it made MiSTer/SiDi FPGA platforms "worse than software emulators". Ergo, they were speaking from willful ignorance.

But then again, I can understand. How can you trust "untested and unproven" platforms such as these? I mean, it's not like big communities like Z2, Mega Man, ALTTP, or even one of the pioneer speedrunning communities in the form of the Super Metroid community are allowing it, right?

Oh wait... they actually do!

I agree with everyone's opinion that it should be allowed. It was discussed in the discord by some of the people in this thread. I believe the general consensus was that since none of the mods currently own any FPGA system and perhaps some level of lack of knowledge of these systems, combined that there were no active runners running the game on the system that it wasn't a high priority item to be reviewed. I do think it's something that needs to ultimately be included, because original hardware is going to continue to become more scarce, and MTPO specifically benefits from having lower latency systems, which is important in achieving some of the faster times in this game. All that said, there frankly, aren't many people running the game on anything other than original hardware, and the number of mods that are actively managing the game is also pretty small, so I can understand the hesitance to broaden additional scope of their efforts.

Exactly what kthree said. The community is fairly small compared to one's you mentioned like alttp and sm and there are not a ton of active mods, and those that are may not be able to look into things like that at the moment. They probably aren't intentionally ignoring you either, not everything is seen by everybody. If it's something you think is important or passionate about I'd encourage you to bring it up somewhere like the discord again! In my experience this community tries to be as helpful as possible.

This has been brought up numerous times in the discord and i get the impression thats its being purposefully ignored at this point in full honesty. I brought it up along with others more than once and at that point i gave up. I didnt wanna be the person who kept bringing it up in general because i didnt wanna be annoying. Heres to hoping they look into it! Would be a great way to attract more runners to the game for sure. My impression from hanging out in the discord briefly is that MTPO has probably seen a fair amount of cheaters by the looks of it. And with that said i kind of understand why there might be a hesitation to introduce a new platform to run it on. Im just guessing that is what it is in general

After doing a little research on this device, it’s actually more cost effective to go purchase an NES console at the moment than buying all the parts required to get this hardware working. None of the mods are ignoring this topic. We are very aware of this device. Considering how small this community is, no one is probably going to go out their way to purchase and test this hardware when there are cheaper and better options still available. The DE-10 Nano Kit alone will cost around $200 and is usually out of stock at most retailers who sell it which is 4 times the cost of an NES console and that just one part needed for this device. As far as more people will run the game if this device is allowed is not completely true. There are still a lot of options allowed to submit runs and plenty of easier and/or cheaper options if anyone really wants to dedicate their time to this game. If anyone wants to learn and run this game they won’t let this one thing prevent them from achieving that. We encourage anyone who has interest to run this game. It’s very rewarding once you improve your skills. :-)

The point is not how expensive a MISTer is.

I did some more digging about this hardware and asked Eon, who is a Zelda 2 mod, to gather more info. Eon left me with some really good info about Mister so I passed that along to all the other MTPO SRC Mods to gather their input. Obviously, it will have to be a collective agreement whether Mister will or won’t be allowed for MTPO. So, I’m trying to be helpful with this topic but I can’t promise it will be allowed and unless a decision is made to allow it, it won’t be allowed. Hopefully we will know soon.

After bringing this topic to other mods attention about allowing MISTer FPGA, Zallard chimed in and said he is all for allowing it for MTPO runs. Everyone else is fine with either way so it’s looking like we will get it approved and added to the Rules List as an allowed option.

Rules have been updated and MISTer FPGA is allowed

This is really great news. I appreciate that you went the extra mile to look into it!
