HappyLee's "maximum coins" TAS - he spends the whole time in 4-2 looping here to get coins

Oklahoma, USADarpey6 years ago

Your link is bad

https://www.speedrun.com/SMB_and_Legend_of_Mega_Koopa

is the correct link

fpg is possible in any level that has a staircase and flagpole

You can look at HappyLee's warpless TAS to find out what is theoretically possible... he does a full flagpole glitch on 1-3

You should probably keep questions about your rom hack to the forums in your rom hack located here --> https://www.speedrun.com/SMB_and_Legend_of_Mega_Koopa/forum ... it feels like soliciting asking on this forum.

29.7 or 29.8 seconds should be the time when the screen goes black. 30.1 would be if you missed the optimal framerule. If you're getting slower than that consistently you might accidentally be using the PAL version rather than NTSC

The thing is - if you can't do the 3 bump method (it is hard for newer players) I'd suggest you do a four bump method, or an easier set of three bumps and shoot for the 373 or 372... just to get a run as close to 5:00 as you can. If you want to do blazit for blazit's sake, good for you, but there really is a reason that only the people going for 456 runs (a single digit number of people) do blazit... because it's really hard to do consistently. And even if you get it, you're likely to miss the framerule that it would save you over the normal 375 3 bump method.

Four bumps aiming for a 373 or 372 is pretty easy, and it only loses you a single second over blazit, which is a trick so difficult only a few people in the world are trying it.

Here's an example of an easier three bump wrong warp setup that will get you a 373... but there's tons of different ways that you could do it, as long as you're jumping backwards three (or more) times against a block

Downloaded the file from your link in the first post of this thread. Same thing - loads then black screen

Oklahoma, USADarpey6 years ago

Hmm - so when I load the rom onto my powerpak, it just shows a black screen - loading the same rom into FCEUX emulator works fine - with the chasing somewes intro :)

It takes a little longer to load than a normal game... then just blackness

So, after doing any% and getting a sub-5 time... I never had to learn the technique of "sniping"... once I went to warpless, I found that it was very difficult to get the weird button combinations necessary for "sniping".

Sniping is firing a fireball in such a way that you can take out a plant in front of you, so that you can land on its ledge. In order to do this, you have to shoot the fireball, and then continue to move upward, rather than terminating your ascent as you fire. Since the "B" button controls both running and firing, you have to then switch back to holding B after firing to continue running, or mario will begin to walk.

Ordinarily, without fire mario, all you ever need to do is ALTERNATE between A and B, and never interchange them simultaneously... It's an incredibly useful technique that's honestly SUPER easy to do once you learn it... but super confusing to learn. I thought a series of GIF images might illustrate it.

I know of a few runners that are really good (with times significantly under 5 minutes in any%) that can't get the technique. Maybe this will help?

First, an illustration of the two techniques just jumping straight up.

NOT SNIPING (shooting a fireball with an exchange of A and B will almost certainly mean you will land on the plant before the fireball, or the fireball will go OVER the plant, and you will die) Notice that Mario starts to descend immediately when he shoots the fireball. You want mario to continue to ascend AFTER shooting the fireball, for at least a few frames. https://images-ext-1.discordapp.net/external/1zCYM7gG_bwxYuIJcI9eGLwErgmj5fKTweS6IqntJs0/https/im5.ezgif.com/tmp/ezgif-5-d1a6842d83.gif

SNIPING (you STILL hold onto A (which continues your upward ascent) as you press B (which releases the fireball)) https://media.giphy.com/media/ddR3BmwAQsqdAzDmNg/giphy.gif

Now what it looks like in actual runs... I tried to exaggerate the time holding both buttons... ordinarily it would be only a couple frames that both were held.

6-2 first plant "snipe" https://images-ext-2.discordapp.net/external/bktLEgoe5MU3EG6kRVnYsMdYjdectGWUTdOthXTiNrA/https/im5.ezgif.com/tmp/ezgif-5-5929a18287.gif

6-2 double plant "snipe" https://images-ext-1.discordapp.net/external/eUtHHAS96mF2tljH1ZxlitUsP-M1EoYkFGH6gpF-PQc/https/im5.ezgif.com/tmp/ezgif-5-9cf66b6339.gif

Buttons NOT SNIPING B (running) B B X A (begin to jump) X A X A B (release fireball... while beginning descent) B B Die from a piranha plant

Buttons SNIPING B B B B A X A X A B A B A B A B B B B A B A

Buttons SNIPING (with explanations) B (running) B B B A (initial jump, continue holding A for as many frames as necessary to determine height) X A (only holding A, need to release B to allow "B" to control fireball, rather than runspeed) X A B A (shoot fireball) B A ("A" continues to be held for ascention after firing) B A ("A" still held for height) B (begin to descend) B B B A (jump again after landing on ledge) B A

Maybe this could help people that don't quite get the "A" "B" dance. A sub-20 warpless time would be MUCH easier if you have the ability to "snipe" plants in front of you, and learning optimal strategies for each level is possible.

I know it was confusing to me for the longest time =)

That's similar to the way blazit works - clipping into a wall facing backwards to scroll yourself forward and keeping the screen from scrolling. Except with blazit you're small, and you clip into the middle of the wall, and you only move forward the minimum amount required to get the wrong warp

:) Back then I was just learning bro patterns (which is an amazing feeling to be able to predict those bros... and see them turn from a nightmare into trivial) - and I had compiled a few patterns, and wanted to see if anybody else had info to make some shared information on patterns.

The gif thread I was just had extra time and thought why not :)

This is exciting =) single elimination really increases the rng - but makes it so it's possible that a newer player could beat a more experienced player (for better or worse)

If you're just starting out... A 379 is a good number to aim for in the underground. Until you have a sub-5 I wouldn't reset as long as you got the 379... It's just 0.35 seconds different (and sometimes the exact same) and if you hold out for only 380s you'll end up wasting a lot of attempt time on resetting runs that could have still been low or sub-5 with the 379

I don't quite know what your asking... If you're asking for darbians time you can click on his run from leaderboards and then download the splits file. If you're really wanting his run without the fpgs then just subtract 0.35 for every fpg that he does.

However I would suggest you just leave it blank and create your own splits that way you can know your lost or gained time based on your own runs

I was being unnecessarily hyperbolic with the word "worthless" (which I have now removed). I also generalized the word based on 1 month of verifications from one category of one game.

I'm probably using language that is too inflammatory in my criticism on these posts in general, and for that I apologize. Fair enough.

As has been stated by myself, roopert and i_o_l - it's a fixable problem - that could be fixed soon.

All you need to do is add 1-3 more people at the quality of goofychocobo, and BAM - problem fixed.

There's plenty of candidates that I think could be great. I don't want to "out" any of them by name though, but I can specifically think of 4 people that have specifically voiced that they would be willing to be mods, and (at least in my mind) would be great. It's probably safe to assume that the two that were once mods would still be interested (although I'm not positive) - and like you said... one of them verified a cheated run, but it seems like that just means that you unverify it, and then speak with the mod that verified it and explain the problem... and if it becomes a pattern then you unmod that person.

I'd be happy to help with verification, I have plenty of spare time, and I know the any% category pretty well, and am very meticulous about details. I have been very critical of half of the voting mod base, so I don't see that happening... but all you have to do is add two mods that have the motivation and ability to verify runs... then this problem that doesn't have to be a problem won't be a problem.

Then we won't have this discussion every two months with runs that are taking weeks to be verified.

It doesn't matter who it is, as long as they're good at verifying and they have the motivation and spare time to regularly devote time to it.

Everybody wins... I literally don't see a downside. ABSOLUTE worst case scenario you mod three new people, and one of them is bad... then you unmod that person, undo the runs that they verified, and keep the other two. Problem still solved.

https://www.speedrun.com/smb1/resources - look at automatic timer...

I have no idea how it works though.

However, I think virtually everyone, including emulator users, just manually split. Once you figure it out, it's pretty easy to do it accurately, especially since this game operates on framerules, so you only have to be accurate to a third of a second. If you don't know about framerules, this video might be worth watching. It's old, but still really good.

I'd just map the "split" command to something you can easily press, then split every time you finish a level - rather than using an automatic splitter. Good Luck

Oklahoma, USADarpey7 years ago

Out of curiosity I just ran the numbers of who verified runs in the last month on the any% leaderboard (searched for the word "days" on the leaderboard, then checked who verified it)... it looked just about like how I'd expect - with the exception of that I knew goofychocobo was doing work, but I didn't know quite how awesome he was doing. You're awesome goofy =)

1st Place - 20 verifications - goofychocobo 2nd Place - 11 verifications - roopert83 3rd Place - 2 verifications - AD2 3rd Place - 2 verifications - SuperSonic71087 5th Place - 0 verifications - mav6771 5th Place - 0 verifications - Kosmic 5th Place - 0 verifications - i_o_l No verifications - darbian No verifications - nickj109 No verifications - Bismuth No verifications - somewes No verifications - andrewg

I put mav, Kosmic and i_o_l as 5th because I've seen them do verifications of new players before... just not in this calendar month.

As far as I'm concerned, the other mods are worthless to the community (as mods).

It may LOOK like we have 12 mods here, but we really only have 4, and of those 4... two of them are doing the vast majority of the work. The other 8 literally have done nothing this month.

"** *I'm not here to win approval and be everyone's favorite mod. ***" - @roopert83

And that's where you've failed - you ARE a favorite mod :)

"* *It does not matter to me that I get to stamp my name on a run that's great or from a popular player. My personal focus is on players new to the game. I'll sit in your chat and explain the game and what I think you should do for strats. I sincerely hope that my efforts over the years have helped promote a welcoming community. I don't want my actions to suggest "well your time isn't upper tier, so it doesn't matter. **" - @roopert83

^^^ You are my nerd-hero. And the golden plunger award goes to...

Serious <3 to the mods that spend their time verifying... it just sucks that the burden falls so disproportionately on a small number of you. <3 to the mods that verify - I don't want to name drop, but the mods that do work (we know who you are), you are awesome.

I just know that it doesn't have to be that way. Again, not to name drop, but if the two people that were temporarily modded months ago stayed modded, I would bet that the verification queue would be almost perpetually at zero... one of those two was seriously talented at timing and loved to do it.

Ironically, the ones holding up the process from adding mods are probably ones that do virtually zero verifications.
