controls switch

I use to be really good at speedrunning perfect dark but then I realized I looked at other runs and saw that I could never get the speeds of anyone else then I left the community for a while. I want to get back into it. First question: is the Legend controls faster than default controls? second question: if so how can I make the switch if I have over 3 years of muscle memory?

Hey Ashley I use default controls and hone in the sensitivity for X and Y till I get a comfy sprint . My best tips would be hold forward until you get full speed then ease into the side strafe to maintain full speed. If you're not side stepping fast enough it's probably because you're not holding enough forward. Tough to explain ( I call it a scoop) lol hope this helps .

As Endeavor also found out it's controller RNG too I had fast times on 360 compared to Xbox One. Some controllers have good strafing speed and some don't. I believe afterglow 360 controllers are actually good. Xbox One controllers are horrible it seems to strafe.

From investigating and learning information over the years. Xbox 360 controllers are luck based on if they can accomplish full speed or not. I've owned and tested over 20 controllers and only 4 of them were speedrun worthy. From others testing the 3rd party wired afterglow seems to have the best odds but all I've ever tested is first party wireless so we know they have at least a 20% chance at being good. Xbox One controllers seem to get fast on incredibly worn and played controllers but not much more is known about that. Nothing tested too much on the Series controllers except they seem like they could just be the same as Xbox One. They might only work if incredibly played and worn.

As for the main part of your question yeah the majority of runners use the default controls but you can test other styles to comply with how you want to play. I don't think there really is a fastest control style. How to get rid of years of muscle memory is to just force yourself to play the new control style and play nothing but the new control style from now on. Thats really the only way.

I wish you the best of luck getting back into the game.

I have heard of the different strafing speeds on other controllers. I have a Xbox One Controller, which might not be good with speedrunning. I have been playing my new control style and I got a 5 second difference with using the "Legend" controls. Also endover I am guessing you have both a Xbox one and a 360 is there any differences between the consoles?

As for controllers, I only run OCM Xbox One controllers. And I personally only play on the "classic" (default) control style Since you already own the same controller, I have some suggestions that have worked for me. Like Endeavour mentioned, they're fast, once they're worked in, and that's the key. They have to be worked in through playing. I worked in completely new controllers within less than a month, with 2 hours a day, average playing. If I take my controller, and bring it up to eye level, and look at the left stick base, it's slightly hourglass shaped, as opposed, to the right, which is straight up and down vertical. Plus the left stick circular opening on the faceplate is worn wider, giving me more area to move, and the stick actually goes further, compared to the right. You have to test where the strafe points are on both sides; "roughly" where the hour hand on a clock would be at 10:30 position, for the left/up strafe, and 1:30 for the right/up strafe position. Then hold each of those spots while facing a corner, and it should take a couple seconds until the up and down bobbing motion is as fast as it can go. Once you have a sense for these spots, try playing and use these spots as much as possible when speedrunning. Then it should become natural. When my controllers cease to function properly, I try and swap out the worked in sticks and faceplate onto a new controller, then it feels the same, but with a functional new controller. As for consoles, yes there's differences. The 360 will have discernible lag when explosions, etc happen, and slower times between loading levels. The One, S/ X, and Series S/X respectively, will have increased processing speed the higher the model is. It also depends on whether the PD versions in any model have been updated or not. An original digital copy on a 360 without being currently updated, will have older properties still intact. Usually to a disadvantage, but not entirely. I hope all everyone mentioned helps you. I Know it's not an instant fix, however you're passionate enough to ask, and that's a positive advantage.

Yeah the only difference between the consoles comes in the form of the controller and the loading speeds which only really matters in full game runs. If you are an IL grinder only then the console won't matter. The newer the console the faster the loads. so in order of slowest to fastest goes as follows. 360-One-S/X-Series S/X.

Hopefully, with this knowledge I can start on getting up the ranks, I know it is going to be hard switching to a different control style, and maybe still keeping my Xbox One S controller, even though it might make strafing a bit slower. I know that I can improve a lot in my time, but itll be hard using a different control style. Thank you guys for chatting here.

If i take a break from PD I lose my muscle memory for full speed. It's not easy ...but Villa is a great place to practice. My old PB on Villa was 1:18 but after taking a break I couldn't beat 1:25 .
