Possible new Run Category

Hello Everyone,

I recently started speedrunning this game on nintendo 64 console in English and have been enjoying it.

I have an idea for a new category for a run that id like to hear opinions on.

The run would be All Specials, and would require the runner to collect all special parts. The run starts when the player hits start game on a new racer and ends when the player confirms getting the final special item - the H-Laser - after the race it is unlocked.

The only part of the category that I am struggling with setting a rule for is the Air Duct. The Airduct requires the player to place in the top three on the same track 30 times to unlock. However, in practice, the Airduct unlocks at a variable number of wins. I have unlocked it after 25 races most comomnly, but I have seen as low as 19 and as high so far as 26. I think it has to do with the game storing the number of wins separate from the racer that is created. Placing in first-third after completing the run, like if the runner is practicing, adds to the total it counts. This number doesn't seem to reset with console reset, even when the player is not using a memory card.

My proposed rule for this would be a runner for the category, if it would be created, EDIT the player must still complete all 30 races that would unlock airduct, regardless when the player actually earns the airduct.

With all this said, an overall view of the run would look like this:

-Run starts when the player presses start game on a new racer. -Run ends when the player confirms taking the final special part. (The H-Laser since it requires all other specials to be unlocked before it unlocks, unless a way is found to get the H-Laser prior to unlocking all other specials. Then run ends when taking the final special part is confirmed) -Edited racers and console cheats are not allowed. -Any class can be used to acquire parts (partially because Crown and Statue, which are needed for the Nozzle, require class AA to get, while all the specials require class A).

  • EDIT The player must complete 30 races in the top three on one track even after taking the Airduct. (subject to change based on discussion)

If the player skips getting the airduct when it is available, the player needs to do another set of 30 races for it to show up again; hence the change from the original

I think this would be a good mid-length speed run for the game and not too repetitive, like the all parts category would end up being, since players would only run the shortest race to try and get all 90+ parts.

I am interested to hear others opinion on this speedrun and talking with the mods of this game as well.

Hello Timo! Nice to find a Penny Racers notification! Long live Penny Racers 64!!

So you propose that the All-Parts category does not include the special parts? I didn't figure that - nor did I attempt a run.. :-P I like this idea of a run. It is honestly the only I can imagine outside of AA-class complete. Maybe you could add that you'd have to start with only Class C unlocked?

About the Air-Duct: To be sure about your theory: Could one place 1-3 29 times in a row on the same track -> Restart their console -> Win a single time on the same track and get Air-Duct?

If that is the case then I agree that the 30 consecutive 1-3 placings has to be a part of the actual run. Not a part of some preparation / practice.

If the Air-Duct is based on pure RNG, then I think it is nonsense to make any ruling about it. Afterall, what are our sources that it is actually 30 races that is required? If you can get lucky to have it after 19 races then let that be it and go on.

A lot of this run would be repeating races on Alpine anyway as it is the shortest track. So you would definitely place 1st atleast 30 times on Alpine during this run when the goal is to unlock all parts. The most optimal route would follow this rule - even without its existence. Please correct me if you disagree!

I hope the mods will respond to this and make it a category. I know WMJ runs F-Zero X regularly and he is a mod on Penny Racers. Perhaps you could contact him?

I would strongly consider to do a run myself one day! - If I ever get a reasonable recording setup for my N64..
