Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny Any% - Normal
Updated 3 years ago by LonerHero

[section=Preface]

These notes are based on hinge's latest run. Over the time, this guide will be updated adding beginner friendly route that will help most runners to finish the run.

Unlike Onimusha 1. Onimusha 2 is much tougher run. Mostly due to the fact that you have given an ability to chain Issen up to 9 times and further. On the top of that you could Issen bosses. Therefore, the upgrades are mostly irrelevant making this run look more of a Low % run. Although, you can use souls to upgrade armor for not dying so quickly.

General rules of thumb against bosses

• If you miss issen chain absorb the souls that you get
• If worse comes to worse when failing Issen. Feel free to fight them normally
• Absorb the souls, if you got hit a lot or running low in magic
• Take advantage of your Oni form. When first starting the run for the first time
• The boss tutorial video will be released eventually as I start running this game

Onimusha Mode Some enemies will release large purple souls when they die. If you absorb five of these you will enter a supercharged state where you become temporarily invulnerable and do tremendous amounts of damage with your attacks. You can even shoot deadly energy from your hands that will track and destroy any demons in the room. Onimusha mode only lasts a very short time, but you can extend it if you absorb more purple soul energy while in this state. Once you return to normal you will need to collect five new purple souls before you can do it again. One good tactic is to collect four purple souls before a boss battle so you are just on the edge of going into Onimusha mode. Once the boss battle begins you can hopefully collect the final purple soul and gain a significant advantage on the boss.

Movement Much like the rest of Onimusha trilogy. This game uses Tank control.

Issen chain Make very sure to hold R2 while locking on, so your weapon doesn't use charge attack when you fail Issen. The timing of chains does not change depending on the enemy/boss. The timing changes depending on the weapon. There are 3 different motions for each weapon. In order to chain, hit the attack button aiming at the moment when the character stops moving.

Trading system In addition to your regular inventory you will find and purchase Gift Items that you can use when interacting with various sub-characters in the game. Depending on what item you give to which character can increase or decrease your "friendship" with that person, as well as get you some interesting items in exchange. In speedrunning, we try to manipulate this system to take advantage of healing items and make sure that side quests won't trigger at all which makes your run significantly longer.

[section=The Run I : Ginghamphatts I]

Yagyu Village

• Pure movement
• Pick up frog and Buraitou

Imasho Town

• Get Confetti from the man on your left wearing the hat
• Talk to the person who blocks The Gold Mine entrance
• Go back to town and enter the bar for Magoichi and Ekei cutscene
• Inside the bar go to the back of the bar and buy a Permit for 100 Gold from the man near the bar
• Use Confetti exchange on Magoichi x5 times to reduce the friendship
• Talk to the two men standing outside of the blacksmith area. Return to the bar and go upstairs to find Kataro
• Go to Gold Mine

Gold Mine

• Go Right
• Ignore Jaid (lizards)
• Take Right
• Mandatory Jaid Fight. Try to kill them with Issen-dance while you can
• You get to fight with Kotaro against Jaid for the second wave
• Pick Hyoujin-Yari, Ice Spear
• Retrace your steps back to the T-junction. Head north and remove the demon lock with your spear
• Continue into the next area and get the Medicine from the item box
• Safety save before the boss fight
• Ginghamphatts (boss): Dies in 10 Issen hit
• Continue into the next passage. Talk to the miner lying on the ground
• You teleport to Imasho Town and get a Red Ring used to open that stone hatch you saw back in the mine
• While you are making your way over there 3 rolling Bazuu will block you. Issen them

[section=The Run II: Gogandantess I]

Castle Gifu

• At the bottom the shaft of light you find yourself in an ominous cavern. As you approach the door several demons warp into the room wielding large logs. Go back to previous area and come back to despawn them.
• A demon blocking your way magic Ice spear twice
• Go through the large doors opposite where you exit from the ramp
• Head Straight to find Ekei fighting then go back to despawn it
• Go through the door on your left and solve the puzzle for the key item
• you can use the Magic Fountain to refill your magic and solve the puzzle in the back of the room. This puzzle is fairly simple. You only have to place four numbered tiles in the corner sections of the grid and the only rule is that all rows and columns must equal 15.
Top Row: 6 - 1 - 8 Middle Row: 7 - 5 - 3 Bottom Row: 2 - 9 - 4
• Go back to the same room where you found Ekei but despawned. Grab herb from the box in the corner if you want to play safe. After that, go through the double doors opposite of where you entered.
• this next small room is a trick box with a Power Jewel inside.(If you want to go safe, use the right-bottom, top-right, and left-top arrows to complete the pattern).
• Go through the next door. Follow the narrow hall and take the staircase.
• On the second floor, you will face a small army of demons. Go through the double doors to find yourself on the balcony that previously held the archers. Go around and enter the door to enter the next room where you can collect the Purify Charm from the table and the Herb from the item box (safety pick).
• Go back to staircase hallway, so you can enter the door that is also under these stairs and talk with the spirit hovering of his former body to give him the Purify Charm
• You should have both part of the bronze mask now. You know where to use this
• You will face two giant demons. Ice spear magic them
• If you want, get the Medicine from the box near the door.
• Continue through the next door behind the old Phantom Realm gate and face Gogandantess, your next boss battle. You cannot win this fight.
• You do need to maintain a constant offence. The trick is to hit Gogandantess in fast succession for a predetermined amount of hits before Oyu rescues you. If you guard for too long or fail to keep up a constant level of attack the hit counter is reset and Gogandantess becomes more fierce in his attacks.
• Essentially you need to hit with your spear twice on normal attack then backdash repeat
• You will receive Oyu's Faith Orb, which in turn unlocks a giant metal sphere that turns into an Iron Horse. Ride the horse back to Imasho Town.

[section=The Run III: Jujudormah]

Leaving Imasho Town for the last time

• You will get cutscene from kotaro grab the Tengu Mask after that
• While you are making your way to the bar grab box nearby that gives you Globe
• Talk to Ekei once before exchanging him
• Exchange with him: Frog to get a herb. Globe to get a Fire Arrow. Tengu Mask to get bullets
• Head to the marketplace and talk to the mysterious woman with the creepy parasol

Yagyu Village

• Continue across the stepping-stones and through the caves to arrive at the lake in time to witness the murder of Jubei's mother. Pick up the Ring of Takajo and head back through the caves.
• Return to the village and enter Jubei's house. There will be plenty of soldiers scattered about the house you don't have to kill as you make your way to the back room behind the kitchen.
• Look at the bureau along the wall and use the Ring of Takajo to open the panel and reveal a puzzle. The solution to this puzzle is contained in the two halves of the Four Guardians picture which we have not collected at all through this run.
Select the first option 3 times. Second option 2 times. Third option 2 times. Last option one time.
• The fire pit opens up as well as a drawer with a retractable ladder.
• Descend the ladder and follow the narrow corridor. After you narrowly miss falling into the pit jump over the gap and press Up to climb up. Cut the ropes blocking your path then retreat as the whirling blade trap starts chasing your down the passage. Jump the pit and hang there as the blades pass overhead then climb up and jump back across to continue to the exit.

Fog Valley

• Continue down the path and climb the ladders as quickly as possible.
• Ignore the green seal for now and continue climbing and follow the path to the narrow wooden bridge guarded by some giant Gozaresu demons. Ignore them.
• On the other side of the bridge you can get the Herb from one item box after you use the Wind Dragon Shrine to get your third weapon, Senpumaru.
• Backtrack back to the cliffs and use it on the green seal you passed earlier. Get the tiny statue, also known as Nobunaga's Knowledge. Then return, try to Issen Gozaresu.
• Enter the sinister forest and make your way north. you will come to a Y-junction with an odd-looking creature floating around. Kill it to dispel the illusion.
• Head back to previous room instead of going straight. Then enter again you get another Y-junction with same creature floating around, but with tougher enemies this time.
• Kill this and repeat process for the third time as well
• Once you re-enter the forest again after killing the Kechacha demon for the third time. You fight Ginghamphatts again.
• He is more annoying this time. He dies in 10 Issen + Magic.
• If you couldn't kill him before he goes into different phase then you will eat major time loss
• Ginghamphatts charges back and forth across the trail disappearing into the trees on either side. If you get caught in his stampede you will take major damage. Hold R1 to lock onto his concealed position in the trees and try to dart out of the way when he charges. Eventually he will smack into a tree and get stunned for a very brief moment

Post Ginghamphatts 2

• Collect the Nobunaga's Reign statue then exit this screen in the same direction you are facing after the battle. Absorb the souls.
• Follow the path to the left. You will notice blue seal behind Gozaresu. Use your Buraitou to break the seal and get Nobunaga's Dignity, the third and final statue. If you can't Gozaresu use magic to knock it down followed by your finisher move.
• Return to marsh area and head through the large double doors. Head inside the building and you will find yourself between two very dangerous looking walls full of spikes. This is the Nobunaga Statue Puzzle and while it's not terribly difficult it is random.
Pull the lever and memorize the order of the three statues that are displayed on the monitor. You then need to place your three statues on the pedestals in that same order. Memorize the position of Nobunaga's arms as they are the only thing that really change. You have four chances before the walls close in and ventilate Jubei.
• Ignore the demon who's bad at gate keeping. Just access the door.
• Equip Hyoujin-Yari, Ice Spear. Because you will come across Gerohone. Aim at the tentcale which blocks the door. Freeze and destroy it with your magic.
• Equip Senpumaru before you get into Jujudormah fight.
• She dies in 11 Issen. Jujudormah will often teleport leaving behind soul energy that you can quickly absorb.
• Block her enraged attacks with the L1 and hit her from behind with magic attacks. Stick to ice and wind attacks as Jujudormah can block lightning with her umbrella. When she finally falls you will collect the Honesty Orb and plenty of soul energy.
• Flip the switch that was revealed as Jujudormah died and enter the secret passage. Open the red box on the left and get the Herb then dash through the rest of the passage as it fills with poisonous gas. A movie takes over as Jubei makes a daring dive into the water below and swims into a cave.

[section=The Run IV: Oyu]

Oni Sacred Place

• Once you've arrived at the beach you won't have much time to admire the amazing water effects. Gogandantess comes riding up on his 16th century Waverunner and challenges you to a second fight that you cannot win. Use the same strategy like the first encounter.

Oyu takes over as a playable character

• Head past the shrine, giant statues and Ignore a pair of Gozaresu. Get the Key Plate from the box at the north end of this area then return to the main hall.
• Use the Key Plate on the Dragon Shrine and the two doors in this chamber will unlock. Take the door on right.
• Ignore the hallway and make your way through the end same goes for the next 2 room.
• Keep the L1 held down to block the spit attacks from the Battooyako that break through the floor. You can't defeat these creatures so just block their attacks until the barrier blocking the ladder is removed.
• Climb down into the next area and rush toward the Gerohone. You can bait it's attack for free Issen when you stand on the left (where the seal is). Otherwise, you can spam your magic attack. head through the portal leading to the Fog Bridge.
• Head down the ramp ignoring all the demons as you make your way to the Magic Mirror. (Highly suggest new runners to get the item box containing the Gradius and equip as it is the most powerful weapon Oyu can wield). Make a safety save.
• Yikes at the red demon. You can kill him in 6 Issen with regular weapon, but I do not suggest new runners to do this strat. Therefore, strike with triple-charged lunge attacks then retreat to recharge before repeating with another triple-charge attack. Keep this up until the demon is defeated and you can collect your prize, the Sacred Flute. Absorb the souls.
• Retrace your path back to the beach.

[section=The Run V: Castle Gifu - East Area]

Jubei takes over as a playable character

• Get to the Earth Dragon Shrine to obtain the Dokoutsui, a giant hammer. Then take the right door
• Retrace the path to the fog bridge to despawn the enemies before unlocking the seal
• Get the Circle Key and climb the ladder for a shortcut back to the acid room then return to the main hall where you obtained the Dokoutsui. Take the left door
• Stand under the ceiling fan and unleash a whirlwind to spin the fan and power the lift. Make sure to pick the item that restores your magic
• Head straight to the door
• Take the ladder and follow the path where it leads you into the next door
• Solve the tile puzzle to get the Golden Key
The puzzle is a more complicated version of the 15 Puzzle from earlier in the game. You now have a 4x4 grid and you have to place the numbered tiles at the bottom in the open slots to make all rows (including diagonal) add up to 34. It's not that hard but just in case here is the final pattern: Row 1: 1 - 15 - 14 - 4 Row 2: 12 - 6 - 7 - 9 Row 3: 8 - 10 - 11 - 5 Row 4: 13 - 3 - 2 - 16
• Return to the robot room. Climb the ladder your ignored earlier and use the Golden Key to stop the crates moving along the conveyor. Jump across the top of these crates to reach the next door and use the Circle Key to enter.
• Get near the green idol then examine the next puzzle.
• Match up the tiles with the key shown above. You can move any tile into any open slot so leapfrog the tiles until you swap them to opposite sides. Once the puzzle is solved a Light Path opens and you can leave the Oni Sacred Place.

[section=The Run VI: Path to Demon Cave]

Castle Gifu - East Area

• We now find Jubei on the roof of a tall tower in the east area of Gifu Castle. Find the opening in the fence to get inside and climb down the ladder.
• Head down the ramps Ignoring the archers and knock down the enemies who blocks your way. Exit the tower. Take left on the T-Junction
• Follow the hallway path into the next door
• Open the box near the exit and get the Cherry Key then enter the courtyard leading back to the Keep
• Head to the large doors and get inside where you will face off against several Oda Bodyguards in the main hall. Ignore them and go through the doors to the north and Ignore the Baigozaresu and Bajaido demons. Use the Cherry Key to unlock the east door and enter.
• Optional, but suggested for new runners. Solve the 3-move trick box by pressing left-middle, top-left, and right-top to get the Magic Jewel.
• The black box near the door is for a sub-character so keep going and get the Crescent Key
• Go back to the lake area again
• As you start back across the bridge make the first left (Jubei's left) and use the Crescent Key to unlock the door. Dash along the bridge avoiding as much Battooyako fire as you can and make a right and use the Hyoujin-Yari to unlock the door. Enter this new building and look behind the wall for a narrow passage leading to a Light Path. Step in and warp to the Demon Cave.

Demon Cave

• Next to a convenient Magic Mirror there is a box with some Medicine.
• From the Magic Mirror take left
• Go all the way straight as you keep avoiding demons until you come across the same poisonous monster who's blocking the bridge leaver. It should die in 2 hits of magic Ice spear and 1 hit of Magic Hammer
• Continue going straight as you avoid the demons.
• After the room that has 2 archers and one gaint demon. You come across a room with a red box open it to get the Great Powder Tube
• Equip senpumaru to break the wind seal
• You are going to come across a miner who is petrified. Use the Great Powder Tube and talk to him to receive big healing item then return to the Light Path
• If you wish you can heal the other petrified miners. Each will reward you with some Medicine, so you decide if it's worth the effort.

[section=The Run VII: Gogandantess Showdown]

Back to East Lake Area

• Exit the building and take the left north door.
• You are having the Onimusha 1 experience when you are trying to make your way to get the strong bow, follow the path to the boat. Don't forget to refil your magic using the Magic Fountain.
• You get the same poison demon who's blocking your progression. Hammer magic twice followed by one spear magic
• Ignore the big guys and head to the back room.
• Use some powder to cure the petrified men. The man on the left will give you a Medicine if you speak to him twice.
• Enter the next room and solve another symbol puzzle. This time there are three symbols on each side but the pattern is still the same. Just leapfrog the tiles until you have swapped sides and the Light Path will be revealed. Step in to teleport to the Underground

Oni Sacred Place Underground

• Make your way across the lake of blood and get the Special M. Liquid from the red box near the door.
• Enter the hall ignoring the demons all the way to the next chamber
• You will face several Oowahya and Bazu demons in the giant octogon arena. Exit to the NW door and enter a small maze of corridors.
• Ignore the first Right go straight. Once you get Junction whether you go north or south. Take south. Keep following the path until you see the same machine. use your wind magic to spin the fan then step on the lift to return to the main floor

Oni Sacred Place Main Floor

• When you reach the top step off the lift and collect the Scarlet Key. Unlock the door and exit into the hall with the murals.
• You need to go back to the room where you solved the 34 puzzle. From there take right Use the Scarlet Key to enter the next area.

Lowest depths of the Oni Sacred Place

• Safety save. Use the Magic Mirror
• Head down the passage and get the Secret Medicine on the right
• Enter the large double doors to face Gogandantess for the third and final time
• Start off by using the Sacred Flute to remove his magical shield
• He dies in 10 Issen. Feel free to fight him normally with magic
• Don't forget to absorb the soul after you get the Respect Orb
• Follow the platform leading to the exit
• You are now back on the main floor in that huge room with the statues. Insert the Respect Orb to trigger the Oni Genbu

[section=The Run VIII: Oni Genbu]

Oni Genbu

• Examine the glider in the centre of the room then prepare to solve a puzzle that relies on dexterity more than logic. You need to open the hanger doors by rotating two dials at the same speed. Each dial is controlled by one of the sticks on your controller so you have to swirl the sticks around simultaneously and at the same speed. If one side of the door gets higher than the other it will get stuck and you will have to lower it back down before you can continue. The stopwatch in the top-left is counting down to the total destruction of the island so NO PRESSURE!
• After this puzzle, you start in the engine room of the giant airship. Follow the walkway to the large door
• From the start of this room head north and ignore the archers
• Go through the door into the lengthy passage that ramps upward leading toward the control room of the ship

Castle Gifu Tower

• Get the door on your left
• If you are familiar with Onimusha 1 you are essentially taking a path where you fought Marcellus for the first time
• You will be fighting Gyaran Queen instead. Your resource is very limited and it's highly suggested that you should practice Issen against this mini-boss
• You start taking out small Gyaran with Senpumaru until nothing is left for her. When you have defeated all of the smaller Gyaran the Queen will try to roll over you. Time your side step properly along with your 4 Issen chain
• Collect the Gold Scale and Use it on the glowing fish statue on the roof and the force field blocking the bridge will vanish
• Cross the bridge leading to the Demon Base and prepare for the final two battles

[section=The Run IX: Demon Base]

Final Stage

• You will definitely want to pay a visit to the Magic Mirror and Magic Fountain located near the exit of the first level of the Demon Base.
• Final Ginghamphatts is the ultimate run assassin. It takes a lot more Issen for him to die.
• Eventually splits into two sections, one that flies and a larger section that skitters across the floor. Both sections share the same hit point meter but you need to concentrate your attacks on the one who's flying around. Unless you consider the master of Issen, use all the magic attack from each weapon. Take advantage of Onimusha mode
• Consider upgrading senpumaru before getting into Nobunaga
Unlike Fortinbras in Oni1 and unlike that run in general.

Because of how this route works, you really need to steal your Issen practice against him. What you need is to land 18 critical hit against him Followed by Thunder Magic > Ice Magic > Earth Magic. Nobunaga hits like a massive truck. In his dying breath he transfers his essence into the giant 4000-ton Gold Statue and stage two begins

Now you have a whole new set of attacks to learn and avoid. Nobunaga will fire meteors that will track you. Destroy them with your missiles or sidestep them at the last minute. Also watch for red spots on the ground that indicate stalagmites that will burst through the ground in those locations. When the statue opens its bottom mouth a jet of flame will shoot out and sweep back and forth. Did I forget to mention the eye-lasers? These deadly energy beams will shoot out and sweeps to either side or narrow in the middle. Jubei can avoid these by quickly sidestepping or sticking to the middle of the screen near the bottom.

The best tactic is to simply stay out of the robot's range by moving backwards during this entire encounter. Maintain a constant fire until you have destroyed both the statue's arms at which point Nobunaga starts sending out stone masks that will circle and protect his head. He also shoots out masks that will surround Jubei and spin around shooting poison gas. These can all be easily destroyed by rapidly hitting the fire button.

Keep up the attack and dodge anything Nobunaga throws at you and always keep moving backwards to stay out of range. Make sure to heal as needed and you should defeat Nobunaga's final form in a few minutes.

Final split once you see the cutscene.
