No Man's Sky Artemis%

No Man's Sky Artemis% is the category in which we try to go from the beginning of a fresh file to the centre of the galaxy. Instead of utilizing black holes or abusing Portals, in the current release, you can follow the Artemis Storyline to the end, where it will play the same cutscene as when you reach the Center of the galaxy, by "resetting the simulation", utilizing approximately 20 warps total, instead of travelling the 600,000 or so lightyears manually. Center% would be getting there without this Artemis shortcut method.

I thought it would be a good thing to post a guide like this, so others may consider getting into NMS and its other potential categories.

Your typical run in this mode will be 3 hours long, once you have all the optimizations down along with a good amount of luck. Try to run in windowed mode, minimal graphic settings, offline mode, and permadeath (that's what I did). I'll include a link as to my settings: https://imgur.com/a/8oWwGEB Tweaking these may result in a hindered ability to scoot (explained later). If there is an optimal setup you've discovered that minimzes loadtimes and maximizes movement tech, by all means PM me. Livesplit works as a timer just fine; individual splits being optional. Timer starts when you press E/Square to load simulation, and ends at the cinematic that plays once you reset the simulation.

I'm using a PS4 DS4 controller, I don't know all the buttons to use for keyboard to make this work. Keyboard menus and thus some gameplay is faster than Controller menus, but I find gameplay more comfortable with a Controller. Can't fly a ship with keyboord to save my life. You can switch between the two if you prefer. Let's begin.

After ~50 seconds you'll gain control, and the Planet info will pop up. Skip that, and switch to First Person. Use the Mining Beam to take out some Big Carbon plants (trees, etc.), Rocks, and Crystals. Most game beginnings have these nearby upon your spawn. 50 Carbon, 50 Ferrite, 50 Dihydrogen to start. Keep going until you run out of Hazard Protection. Your Multiool destroys resources when the bar is glowing red/yellow, so keep it in that state my tapping the laser when it's near the end of the bar, to avoid Overheating. Once out of HP, don't worry, you have a full bar of Protection, and you only lose health if you let it get to zero (3 HP bars, plus the innate Hazard protection that has to get hit ~5 times by poor weather before your actual Health depletes; this innate protection recharges, and you are best to do your movement on-planet with it full, as you'll be taking trips and falls and if you get damaged with it at 0, that's one of your three Health Crosses forever gone. Hazard Protection will recharge fast enough on its own in buildingss/caves, where innate protection can recharge as long as you don't take large falls, even in poor weather.

At this stage, you can go to your nearest cave, and let the Hazard Protection recharge. In the meantime, keep destroying plants for Carbon through the cave opening, or some cave plants if there. Also, start destroying some rocks around you for Ferrite dust (pickup 40 Cobalt if you want). If you run out of Mining Beam fuel, recharge it with the Carbon you got. Once you run out of things to destroy from the angle of the cave, or once your Hazard Protection is full, you can move on. Regrettably, if there is no cave near you, it's honestly better to reset and try again, particularly for beginners. If there are high value items around you, pick those up.

The most important thing you will be mining is Carbon, though some Ferrite/Dihydrogen/Copper may be required too. This is because you cannot buy Carbon from Terminals, though it can be converted from Oxygen via a Refiner. The other elements you can purchase or produce. Dihydrogen can be converted from Jelly via a Refiner at great rate. But we don't have any Units yet, we need to work on that too. The best runs will put you outside a cave that contains Humming Sacs/Vortex Cubes. You'll be able to sell those for about 10k units each. Early game from the first planet, you want 50k units worth of items. So collect these high-value items if they are immediately around you. Some animals can be scanned for 3000 Units, so do so because turning them in for more Nanites via Discoveries is required later on. Later on you can grind for Salvaged Data a bit, collect rare ores, or get lucky (I'll explain later).

Stocked up on Carbon, Dihydrogen and Ferrite Dust , go to your menu. Build 1 Jelly, 1 Metal Plate, and 1 Carbon Nanotube. Go to Multiool. Build and Install an Analysis Visor. Focus and look around for your Ship via the Visor. That's your next direction of interest. Don't worry about picking up Sodium yet.

Now here is a speedrunning trick, that I've dubbed "scooting". I've used it for years in my casual gameplay. I'll explain it here:

By alternating the Focus (Visor Zoom In) and Punch (Melee attach via Multitool) command, you refresh both immediately, minimizing their cooldown. This means you can switch between one and the other, and maintain the forward momentum of the Punch perpatually, to scoot over the land. Doing this on flat ground, you will effectively be gliding forward rapidly. Warning, this does cost you your health, as it triggers fall damage often. But it's easy to learn and master. Not as good against hills and slopes, but it's still better than wasting your jetpack and losing Life Support. If you don't want to use this, you can try the common Punch-Jetpack trick. By Punching and Jetpacking before the Punch animation completes, you'll get a great boost forward. Be sure to allow enough Jetback charge to cushion yourself, or you'll likely die from the fall damage. This is most beneficial from going from high ground to low ground. If you don't want to use this trick either, you can hold "Punch" to get minor sprinting momentum boosts.

Get to your ship; it should be less than 1000u away. Safest now to Hop in, to get some of your HP recharged. Mash through the Text Boxes. Alternatively, you can pick up the Oxygen plants and Boxes around. Most Text is not relevant to read. When given options, often the top one is sufficient. I have not routed in the fastest selections, but you're going to want to Accept when prompted.

(For those looking for efficiency, use your first Metal Plate crafted and 30 Oxygen from getting the 4 Oxygen plants nearby to build a Refiner early, throw in the Rusted Metal gotten from one of the Boxes. It'll get you a lot of Ferrite. You can go through some starship text and grind more Carbon while it's going for ~2 minutes.)

Craft another 1 Metal Plate, and Fix your Ship. If you also got your Multiool fixed with 75 Ferrite, it will then prompt you to find the Hermetic Seal. Dismantle your Rocket Launcher for some Copper and Condensed Carbon. Touch the Spherical Red Goo. Use the Planetery Chart it gives you, and make your way over to the Point of interest.

Go inside one of the Structures, and access the Holo to get your Seal. Often, a Storm will spawn at this point. Stay inside and recharge your Hazard Protection. At the right position, you can stay at the edge with the door open, still recharging your Protection. Doing this, grind some more Carbon and Ferrite Dust while you wait for the Storm to end.

Go back to your ship. You should have seen at least some Dihydrogen Crystals during your trek by now. Get as many as you can; sometimes they yield Hard Crystals. Dismantling these gets you more Dihydrogen, or if you are lucky, Storm Crystals (100k each). Don't count on it though, but you need the Dihydrogen anyways. Craft one Jelly as well with it. If you didn't make it yet, you'll need at least 30 Oxygen. Combine it with a 2nd Metal Plate, to make your Refiner. Plop the Refiner down, and invest 90 Ferrite Dust, to make 90 Pure Ferrite. While the Refiner is doing its thing, just grind for more Ferrite Dust and Carbon. Finish fixing your ship with 50 Pure Ferrite, Jelly, and the Hermetic Seal. Launch into space.

For future reference, you can craft Launch Fuel with 1 Metal Plate + 40 Dihydrogen. You will get a new Point of interest. You can visit this now or, if you think you can see it. Head for where the Leylines meet in the sky, and visit the Space Station early. Destroy some surrounding Asteroids for Silver/Gold, can sell these for early Unit accrual, but keep the Trititum to recharge the Pulse Engine for the future.

If you've reached the Station, go for the Terminal (both of them). This where RNG will play a big role in how fast your speedrun will be.

There are a number of useful elements you will eventually require: Uranium (substitute Launch Fuel, need about ~350 for the whole run) Pyrite/Tritium (200 vs. 500, purchased vs. free) Chromatic Metal (for building Warp Cells later and other things, need about ~1000 for the whole run) Copper (if there's no Chromatic Metal, this can be refined into it, need about ~250 raw for the whole run, twice the Chrom Metal amount if you can't find any CM) Sodium, Oxygen, Ferrite Dust (need about ~750 each for the whole run) 8 Wiring Looms (expensive, don't buy these now) 6 Microprocesors (about 120k total, buy these after you constuct your Base) 2 Ion Batteries 10 Jellys 10 Carbon Nanotubes 10 Metal Plates

But you cannot buy all of these with only ~50k Units. So stick with ~100 Sodium, Ferrite, Oxygen, 60 Copper/30 Chrom Metal, 10 Metal Plates.

Once you are stocked up, leave, and head for your second planet. Access the Damaged Machine, and you will be need to build the Terrain Manipulator and Base Computer. TM is with 2 Carbon Nanotubes (100 Carbon) and 1 Jelly (50 Dihyrdogen). If you have no Copper yet, just use the batch gotten from dismantling the Rocket Engine. Throw this 100 Copper into your Refiner for 50 Chromatic Metal. You'll also need to throw in your remaining 40 Pure Ferrite for 20 Magnetized Ferrite. You can go for a walk about now to grind for Copper, but what you want more is Salvage Data. They sell for about 20k, and are the next best way to get Units fast. Total of 8 is safe, but the more the better. Do this if your first planet did not have anything of more value.

Going back to your Ship, build a Base Computer nearby. Log this planet as your home base. Build a Log Cabin (1 Wooden Floor, 3 Walls, 1 Door, 1 Roof (technically optional, but better to put it up). You should have enough Carbon for this, but look around and destroy some more trees if you didn't grab enough from the first planet. Back to the BC. New recipe. Build a Construction Terminal. Research for the Teleported, Biofuel Reactor, and Wire. Power the Teleporter with 1 Oxygen to complete the quest trigger. If this planet happens to have bodies of water, go to one of them. Look for an Armored Clam, and pick up 1 Living Pearl. You'll need this much later. You'll be visiting a lot of planets, so don't worry if its not here. Keep it in the back of your mind to look for the puddles of water everytime you land somewhere new though.

Once the BC tells you to visit the Space Station, use your newly built Teleporter with ~5 Oxygen charged to teleport away, assuming you've visited the SS before visiting this second planet. Alternatively, you can get in your Ship, and now hit up the Space Station.

Talk to 3 aliens. Sell your Salvage Data such that you have ~120k Units, and buy 6 Microprocessors (need about 185 Chromatic Metal too, so get double that in Copper if you haven't mined for it). Using the Space Station Teleporter, go back to Base.

Base Computer should point you towards a Crashed Freighter. Fly there. Always be sure to land in the Yellow Circle, as it saves your Launch Fuel. Examine the Damaged Machinery. Build your Hyperdrive (5 Microprocessors+ 125 Chromatic Metal). At this point Copper is mandatory, so if you couldn't buy anything good from the Space Staion, you have to get back to scooting around and finding a Copper deposit to deplete with your TM, and then get it processes via a Refiner. Get back into the Ship.

Head for the Abandoned Building. Punch a Whispering Egg and quickly pick up a Larval Core (70k), and head inside. Discard/Transfer the Gelatin. Recieve Antimatter. Build Antimatter Housing. Build Warp Cell. Fuel the Hyperdrive. Go into space. Hyperwarp to a new galaxy. I recommend you manually select one, with a different alien race than your starting planet system. You should be able to complete most game objectives in only 4 star systems. 1 each of Korvax/Vy'keen/Gek. The 4th will whichever Red star system (K or M I think?) is closest to you (but that's much later).

After warping, go to the Space Station. If you got more goodies, sell them. Grab more supplies from the shopping Terminal, especially if you couldn't in the first Space Station.

The next Point should be for an abandoned Ship. Go there, and swap ships. Dismantle the Launch Optimizers off the broken one. With decent luck, you'll get some Antimatters/Wiring Looms. Switch back to your first ship, having the dismantled goods in your Exosuit. There will be no need to upgrade your Exosuit or Ship or Multitool in this run. To gain some inventory slots, you can transfer the Jetback and Life Support to your Technology Tab, as well as your Photon Cannon and Ship Shield as well.

Go back into space. Meet the Anomaly, and Nada. Go through the options. Meet the other Aliens. Get the Cadmium Starship Upgrade, while you're there. Speak to Nada again and Transmit Miletones. You should have about 450 Nanites now. Leave. Get a signal on your Ship and speak with Artemis.

Note, often the game will default your Quest into a non-Main one, so you'll have to go back into your menu and manually switch it to the Main Quest to get the marker back in space so you know where to go.

Head for the Holo Terminus. Need 30 Sodium to unlock it. In the future HT visits, it takes about a minute to climb to the top. While doing so, I would recommend you throw 250 Carbon in your Refiner to turn into Condensed Carbon. The run requires 200-400 to make enough Warp Cells.

Build a Signal Booster. Plant it and Triangulate beside your ship. Fly to the two other places, and Triangulate there too. Back to the Holo. Talk to Arty. Build the Artemis Translator.

New Point. Find an Alien lifeform. Talk and learn a word. Use your given Monolith Chart. Learn 2 more words. Go the new Point, a Trading Post. Speak to the Alien. Improve your rank. If you have 200k Units, you can buy 2 high-value items (Casing, Relic, etc.). Run around and hunt for some more Salvage Data to make up the difference. Buy them from one of Aliens beside a Ship that landed nearby. These you can hand in to 2 different aliens on the same outpost. This will boost your rank up twice. Be sure to do this slowly, to prevent glitching. Otherwise, the game may bug out and not treat it as a rank up. Go back to the first Alien. Show him the chart.

Back to space. Communication with Arty. Holo. Speak to new Alien, Apollo. Warp to a new galaxy to find his Contact. Should be one star system over. Head to the Space Station and speak with the Contact. At this point you should have recieved 15 Salvage. Sell these all. Now is the time to buy all remaining supplies you'll need for the rest of the run. Go back to your other Stations and pick up as needed, and at the same time talk to a Gek Mission Agent and accept 2 quests (the Rank-boosting ones).

Use the Station Teleporter to go back to your Base. Build the Construction Specialist Terminal. Go back to your Gek System via Teleporter, or find a Gek in one of the other ones. Checking the list of Teleport Locations, a Quest Mark should be there for the hiring of the Gek agent, so go there. Hire him and return. Give him 50 Chromatic Metal. Build the Scientific Terminal. Go back to your Korvax System via Teleporter, or find a Korvax in the other ones. Hire him and return. Complete his quest. Be sure to fabricate 3 Glass via your Refiner (can do so with 120 Silicate Powder).

Back to space. Speak with Apollo on Comms. Head to Abandoned Building. Head to Korvax Facility. Apollo Comms. Monolith Point. Relic site. Monolith. Portal. It's a free entry this time. Go on through. You'll get warped into an Atlas Station in about 30 seconds.

New planet. Scoot to your ship. Fix the Launch Thrusters. 1 Jelly + 50 Pure Ferrite. New Point. Grave. Space. Holo. Speak to new Alien, Null. Accept the Mind Arc quest. If you haven't installed the Cadmium Drive yet, do so now. Look for a Red star system (M/K systems). Land on the nearest planet. You'll have to manually look for Cadmium. Use your Analysis Visor to Focus, and Mark a Cadmium deposit. Go towards it and use the Terrain Manipulator to mine. You want ~150.

Head to a new system. Build your Mind Arc. New Point, another Holo. Go there, absorb Artemis. Speak with Null too. Summon the Anomaly. Speak to Nada. Go to the back left of the area. Let Artemis die. This prevents several Comms from opening during your flight. You'll be mostly ignoring your Comms now.

Monolith. Portal. Recharge it with whatever you have remaining in your inventory. Get the address, hop in your Ship, and leave. Holo. Null. Observatory. Freighter. Search the Lost Cargo. You want 4 Encryption keys. Go back to the Damaged Machinery. Talk to it and read the Logs. Holo. Null. Space Station.

Vy'keen Cartographer? He's either here, or you Teleport to your Vy'keen system. Sometimes the game will allow you to cancel and restart your mission, so do so in front of the Cartographer at the approriate space station. He'll tell you to go get a Tablet. Do so at a Point, Monolith. Return to the Cartographer. Listen to his story.

Korvax Cartographer? Teleport to your Korvax system. He'll tell you to go get a Cube. Do so at a Point, Underwater Facility. Optional to install the Oxygen Recycler. Land somewhere near by, and go for a swim. Once retrieved from the underwater terminal, grab the oxygen plant nearby to breathe easier, swim back to your ship, and go back to the Station. Listen to the Korvax story.

Gek Cartographer? Teleport to your Gek system. He'll want you to complete 2 quests. You may have accepted these much earlier in the run. If so, and if you have completed them, you can hand them in immediately. Do so slowly, otherwise your game may bug out. If your rank doesn't increase by two, you'll need to do another quest. Back to Gekographer. Listen to their story.

At some point during your Space Station visits you should have visitied one of the Starship Shopkeeps, to buy an A-class Hyperdrive Module (~450 Nanites). Makes the Warp Cells twice as efficient. The whole run uses 15-20 Warp Cells, about 5 of which are given for free.

HoloTerm. Distress Signal. Portal. Recharge it. Go through. Repair Ship. HoloTerm. Warp 16 times for 16 Glyphs. Portal. Recharge it one last time. Go through. You will be warped off the new planet in about 30 seconds. Atlas Station. Reset the simulation. Pick a galaxy. gg . . . So here's the unstructured general notes. Down the line I may add some detail:

Get in a cave if you can, grind some Carbon/Dust if visible. Let yourself heal to full. 1 Jelly, 1 Nanotube, 2 Metal Plate. 50 Pure Ferrite. 1 Herm Seal. 30 Oxygen for Refiner. Pick a galaxy. gg

Some glitches you may experience:

  • if you're in space and you press L3 to scan too early, you may have to wait for the Quest Trigger to happen again, meaning waiting for the scan to recharge; give it 2 seconds or so before you "look for a Transmission Tower" or similar
  • frequently double check your Log to make sure the Main Quest is highlighted, and the game isn't trying to get you to go to Nada or upgrade your base
  • Scooting can create a black cross in your field of view; goes away after a few more analyses
  • terrain will appear as you move, and sometime underground objects will be above ground; sometimes this is fortunate, and you get high value items without digging, while other times you'll fall into a cave that just decided to generate below you
  • ships can still land in the same launch pad as one another, including your own; just watch who you interact with
  • don't hand in quests or items too fast, sometimes the game doesn't register it; give yourself 5s of leeway or so
  • placing a refiner/signal booster too fast can cause it to vanish, still using your elements if you haven't built one yet; once again, 2s leeway before the action to avoid this
  • Transmission Tower ladders have a big hitboxes; you can climb one simply my facing it from the ground and Climbing
  • when exiting the shift your Multiool may appear frozen; no gameplay affected, but visually amusing, especially in the third-person
  • just because you glanced through the Analusis Visor and saw nothing, don't be shy to circle back and check again; some things generate slowly, like Humming Sacs/Vortex Cubes, and you don't want to miss out on those high-value things

But D_Winds, how can we go faster, you may ask?

There are changes I'd like to implement when it comes to really pushing this time down, though I wouldn't call it beginner friendly (I haven't even completed a run with these ideas yet):

  • reset your file until you are near either a Giant Archive or Trading Post -> these yield complete ships, though without Hyperdrives, obtaining these skips a good 5 minutes of early gameplay; annoyingly you'll need 200k units as well as decent luck if you are to go down this path, meaning you better hope there were some high value items near you
  • spam more Teleporters; if you are super sticked on Carbon Nanotunes and Metal Plates, you can create multiple General Teleporters+Generators+Wires to warp to the Space Station, instead of flying there; this would also save about 5 minutes throughout the run, but needs particular luck in the Trading Terminal Shops as well as familiarity with the route as to when you'd want to place them down
