Consistent Inept Skips
Geüpdatet 6 months ago door DerKO

After all this time, I still feel bad about unleashing this unforgiving strat on the YL Toybox community. I have decided to lab out a setup that is at least better then wildly groundpounding the edge and praying a run can get started.

Guide to get more consistent inept skips:

  1. After you stop talking to Inept, move over to behind the edge while turning your camera upwards toward the wall you want to jump to. We want the camera to be close to Yooka so we can get a good view of his feet.

  1. Jump once.

Jumping serves two purposes:

  • Resets the camera to the same angle every time, as seen in the pic below
  • There is a quirk in the game where you are unable to glide unless you jump at least once. Because we are at the beginning of the game and have not jumped yet, we will be unable to glide to the wall after we get there if we have not jumped.

  1. Move slowly forward until the back of Yooka's heel is JUST on the edge, like so:

Notice how just a few pixels of the heel overlap with the edge?

  1. Spin once. Spinning on this edge moves Yooka upwards to the exact same Y position every time. Yooka's heel now looks like this:

There is now a few pixels between the heel and the edge. Here is a 360 view of where we are at: https://imgur.com/a/qDzc5Bp

  1. Spring jump and then immediately cancel it with a ground pound.
  2. The momentum of the ground pound will bounce you between the edges of the platform and send you flying upwards.
  3. When you reach the highest point, hold A to glide to the wall.

Here is a timestamp of me doing it in my latest run

Examples of bad positioning:

Too far forwards: https://imgur.com/a/uVwQB03

Also too far forwards but really close: https://imgur.com/a/Uzo7E6y

Tip:

If you move too far over the edge, you can maintain your orientation by spinning and moving backwards, like so: https://imgur.com/a/ZAdkQDg

Facing forwards is NOT required for the trick to work, but it is important to use your left heel as a guide to get into position.

Disclaimer:

By manually teleporting Yooka's position to the exact spot with Cheat Engine, I have confirmed that this trick works every time. There is no degree of RNG in this trick, only positioning. It can still take a lot of attempts to try and line it up. However, having a clear idea of where to ground pound can improve the success of attempts substantially.
