and why not create a special emu category like in SM 64

Belgium

to easy to fake runs.

European Union
  1. Cheating on emulator is laughably easy (TAS tools are built into dolphin)
  2. Much faster load times than on console.
  3. We already have far too many categories. Much more than we should have imo. No need for more.
  4. You can decide if its a valid argument, but all other leaderboards for the game also ban emulator.
  5. A console and disc are incredibly cheap. You could probably even just get one from a friend for free like I did lol

@Oxwaa Recently had to buy new ones since my OG console and game both broke and it cost me around $80. ($50 for console, $30 for game disc only). Prices might go up eventually though, but that'll prob. be an argument 5-10 years down the line.

You can find Wii's here for like 15-20 euros if you know where to look

If you learn how to fix Wiis, you can get them for 20 bones, even 15 sometimes!

"1) Cheating on emulator is laughably easy (TAS tools are built into dolphin)" Just ban the use of the TAS tools and have players play the game on Dolphin normally then. You can toggle the TAS tools on or off inside Dolphin.

"2) Much faster load times than on console." How is that a problem? The Korean version of Sly 2: Band of Thieves has much faster load times than the other versions of the game, and yet that's allowed.

"3) We already have far too many categories. Much more than we should have imo. No need for more." You don't have to make an entirely separate category for emulator runs. You can just toggle them to be allowed or not.

"4) You can decide if its a valid argument, but all other leaderboards for the game also ban emulator." For all the same reasons that can be counter-argued easily?

"5) A console and disc are incredibly cheap. You could probably even just get one from a friend for free like I did lol" Yeah, pre-owned or used. In mint-condition, I highly doubt $52 dollars for Mario Kart Wii is considered CHEAP.

My point has been made, and I still await a response.

@Black-Shadow

  1. Anyone can just replay an input file since even if you turn off TAS tools, it doesn't show you when a input file is been played back.

  2. We are not talking about versions differences ffs, making everyone switch to emulator because faster times is a stupid argument.

  3. No

  4. Point #1 + all the years of research put in this game. Literally less than 0.5% of leaderboards of games on console like the Wii or older allow emulators because of slight inaccuracies.

  5. Have fun buy a new/popular game at a game shop for less than 25$ nowadays. You probably can bribe some old lady selling a Wii with games for like 20$ at a garage sale (Please don't do that, this is mainly a joke).

"Anyone can just replay an input file since even if you turn off TAS tools, it doesn't show you when a input file is been played back."

Quoting qflame: "we all know cheating is possible on console and emulator. So what is the argument then, that cheating is easier on emulator? To quote a mod again, "On the topic of Gecko codes, cheating is no easier on Dolphin than console. Cheats like a speed modifier can easily be done on console with homebrew, as well as on Dolphin without changing the code." But it's not just gecko codes people are concerned about, it's Dolphin's TAS features too. However, this argument does not make sense either as TASes can be played back on console. For example, they did this at SGDQ. Until someone can give me a cheating method that is both exclusive to emulator and impossible to mitigate with additional proof standards, I don't think there is a logical reason for banning emulator on these grounds."

"We are not talking about versions differences ffs, making everyone switch to emulator because faster times is a stupid argument." It's not just because of faster load times - it's for the sake of variety.

"No" Confirmed that some mods are too lazy to know that the checkbox for if an emulator is used exists.

"Point #1 + all the years of research put in this game. Literally less than 0.5% of leaderboards of games on console like the Wii or older allow emulators because of slight inaccuracies."

Counterpoint #1 + change "older" to "newer" because most leaderboards I've seen for games on consoles older than the Wii allow emulators (only exception I've seen is the Mega Man Legends leaderboard).

Also, @NicoPlaysThings - you're the person who told me not to bring up Sly 2 using the Korean version of the game due to faster loading times, and yet mentioned that speedrunning communities for newer games (and Mega Man Legends) ban the use of emulators in an example of hypocrisy. I highly doubt you're the type of mod that should counter these arguments supporting emulator use for MKWii Speedruns.
