Well, this is my first time on the speedrun boards but a veteran in the Mario Kart series.

In the international ver of the game, the game chooses the items and the kart for you via a slot machine roulette (throw forward, throw backwards and a special item). These will be used in the race until the game ends. Each play is different so pay attention to the items allocated! The JP ver. will allow you to choose any 3 items of your desire for your race. (Throw forward, throw backwards, special items)

In this guide I will be talking about the items used in the game used by the player or the AI as well as methods on how you can counterattack each move. You can also block the attack by doing a dragon drift (hop left and right by moving the steering wheel left and right) or when drifting.

Throw forward items

The basic methods of an offense in a race. Some items are homing and uses a lock on, otherwise, you have to trust your instinct in aiming well.

Green Shell/Triple Green shell First appeared: Super Mario Kart/Mario Kart 64 Countered/Blocked?- Yes Item approaching warning?- Yes

Fire the green shell forward on your opponent, the shell will withstand a few hits before it disappears.

Red Shell: First appeared: Super Mario Kart Countered/Blocked?- Yes Item approaching warning?- Yes

Fire a red shell that locks on to the opponent, this does not guarantee a true lockon in air attacks.

Black Shell/Triple Black Shell First appeared: Mario Kart Arcade GP DX Countered/Blocked?- Yes Item approaching warning?- No

Works like a green shell but explodes on impact within a radius on the target

Gold shell/Triple Gold Shell First appeared: Mario Kart Arcade GP DX Countered/Blocked?- Yes Item approaching warning?- Yes

Works like a red shell but more powerful. The most used item by veteran players.

Bowser Shell First appeared: Mario Kart Double Dash Countered/Blocked?- Yes Item approaching warning? No

Fire a Bowser type shell that can hit all opponents within range for a while around a specific area

Spiny Shell First appeared: Mario Kart 64 Countered/Blocked?- No (just kidding, you can in this version only_ Item approaching warning?- No

Fire a blue shell that homes in on the racer that is in 1st place.

Silver Pan/Triple Silver Pan First appeared: Mario Kart Arcade GP Countered/Blocked- Yes Item approaching warning? No

Throw a pan that locks on to the opponent and whacks them down reducing their speed.

Gold pan First appeared: Mario Kart Arcade GP Countered/Blocked- Yes Item approaching warning? No

Like the silver one, but lasts longer.
