Metal Gear Solid Forum  /  Skipping Rex Fights on PC (rule updates?)

Hey there, so I remember this really old YouTube video. I'm sure most of you have seen it:

It works by the game somehow giving the player a blank save file to load. I talked to plywood and others, they have all at one time seen this on their game so it's replicatable.

So what's the idea? Well if you don't know we would get this blank load glitch, trigger it twice and you skip both rex fights. No backtracking for the Stinger which means a 6+ minute timesave for PC!

So far I was able to trigger this fight skip 2 ways:

1. Press F7 with cheatenable on. It seems like just refreshing the game while in battle is all it takes.

2. Copy any savegame. Open up that save in notepad, change any digit and then load up the game. During the fight just load that save file you changed in notepad. It basically does what F7 does and what that guy found. The game is like "wtf? this isn't a save with a location pointer? Refresh this location I guess!"

Obviously both methods are kinda shady so I think the rules for PC need to be changed slightly to forbid cheatenable and save file modifying.

I think console might be able to skip the fight similar to how Resident Evil 2 skip scenes by opening the disc cover and reclosing it when during the battle.

I assumed that people would know that mods / editing save files would be banned but i can make that a clearer point in the rules. If we can find a way to skip this fight on console that would be interesting and I'd love to see it, sounds like theres potential.

I mean the rules are shady at best. We allow a trick where you can give the game equip values before even starting the run. That goes against every single rule of an Any% speedrun where it is supposed to be power on, press new game and run until credits.

Imagine if Zelda : OoT had something like that where you could just press L or whatever to equip an item instead of going to the start menu because you set it up before the run started. You would be shown the door.

All I'm saying is that the rules should be clear on what forms of "optimisation" are allowed. For example say this is found to be repeatable legitimately. The current All Bosses rules become unclear. It doesn't have a lifebar to get so is it considered beat because you got the defeat cutscene. etc etc

I'm unsure what you mean by this, am I missing something?

On console people start a new game, play till Heliport and equip Chaff you get at the search light. They then die and quit to main menu. On the proper run when they get the chaff at the same point, they just need to press R1 to equip chaff instead of r2 and manually selecting it. Works because the game doesn't flush out the ram address of what was previously equipped on the last play through.

I can see where your coming from but would we then have to make it a rule that if you quit a run you have to completely reset the game before you can do another attempt? To me it's kinda like someone accidentally doing loading trick in MGS2 by dying during a run and then starting another attempt w/o resetting the game.I get where your coming from though, and don't want to start any issues. So I guess we could just poll runners and see what the general consensus is?

Nah you don't need to do that. All you have to do is just not have any item or weapon equipped when you retry a run.
