What difficulty do you have to play on when speedrunning Sam and Wolf's VR missions in their DLCs? Does it have to be a new save file?

Just for reference I did all my runs on Easy difficulty and with a save already in progress (not really maxed out but not fresh either). Since there's no rules I assume just do whatever way is fastest?
