Possible solution to keep new runners

So after my PS4 downloaded the dreaded 1.16.100 even though automatic updates were turned off I've been trying to figure out a way of motivating myself to continue the runs. So....How about this as an idea.? We keep the overall leaderboard as is. any new times and pbs will be added to it but we also have a 'latest version' leaderboard. The leaderboard would obviously be wiped clean every update but it still gives new players and people who updated a chance to compete. This is still a fresh thought so there's bound to be an obvious flaw but I'd like to hear people thoughts.

You could also just add a after that update leaderboard and mention all the other one are pre that update, I don’t think there is a reason to wipe boards.

They never auto update when you want them too!

Realistically how many people are speed running on console at the moment? Seems like very few. Looking at some other threads it seems splitting up categories is not workable due to the small size already.

I can’t see myself (or any other noobs) starting out knowing your best possible run will still be like 3 mins behind the WR but just with an * beside it though, just cos you joined in at the wrong time.

My point exactly flexo88 No new runners are going to compete knowing that but if we can't split it into 1.14 , 1.16 , 1.17 ect then a latest version leaderboard would be at least something to keep people interested. I find new people all the time streaming console speedruns and I always point them this way in the hope to make the community bigger.

Given that the caves and cliff update is coming next year I think this would be a good idea bc the caves and cliffs update could make speedruns slower or faster making the old runs unbeatable or just an easy WR.

I doubt the 1.17 update is gonna affect speedrunning unless it changes stronghold spawning which it might. That said, I think that any time saves from that are negligible; however, it would be interesting to see some time saves that compete with bartering. For example, you have an easier time finding strongholds, but you have to rely on warped forest strategies; I'm excited to see what this new update brings. As for version splits, you mentioned that the community is already pretty small. It's growing, but slowly. The problem with bedrock is that the mods have to manage so many different platforms at once while java has to only worry about one platform. The mods have to find a balance between fair categories and over-saturating the game with too many categories, and as of right now I think a new version category would be too much. These "mandatory" updates and lack of downgrading is just something that the bedrock community has to accept and deal with. While we can try to minimize its affects, there will still be some unfairness because of the variations of platforms. Nevertheless there are still categories that are hardly affected by version updates like "obtain item" categories. All in all, the idea of a "recent version" category has some problems. For example, would you really want to run a category that was just going to be purged sometime in the near future? One of the best parts of speedrunning is setting a record that you know will stay there, and people would have to beat it instead of just waiting till the next version split. Also, category migrations and purges take time and that's a lot to ask of the mods when versions can come out randomly. TLDR; For full game leaderboards it's probably best for it to stay as it is. Bedrock will have these unfairnesses inherent in the game because of the varied platforms. The mods are doing their best so make sure to give them some encouragement if you're talking with them. Sorry for the long post, but I felt that it probably needed to be said. Thanks for reading!

Lots of good points there lagissad I think the mods do a great job btw and I'd love to hear their thoughts about how we can still keep growing as a community after this latest update. Since I joined the submitted runs on console rsg any% glitchless category has increased by almost 50% from 40 to close to 60 and that's in only two months. My worries are unless we do something to change it to make it competitive then the growth will just stop. The most unfortunate thing about this update is the fact that on console it's not a 'mandatory' update if you know how or were aware of the tricks to stop it. We could do a speedrun tournament akin to what's happening on Java atm but it would be undoubtedly won by someone playing on a version before 1.16.100 because they do have a bigger advantage.( When it comes to pearl trades) Yes there's still other categories to chase down such as obtain items ect that don't rely on pearl trades but most people come into speed running wanting to do either rsg or ssg full game runs and probably won't be happy with chopping down different types of trees as an alternative. My idea to wipe the 'latest version' leaderboard board clean each update isn't a great idea I know but Its at least an idea to build off to keep people interested rather than just staying as we are now. Even a simple text record like the verification leaderboard could be used to keep records of top 1-10 per version. I'm torn by the whole thing tbh and I was simply trying to find a middle ground idea between splitting the leaderboard into different versions ( 1.14 ..1.16 . Ect )and leaving it as is. I don't want to cause arguements or upset anyone by this idea btw I simply want the community to keep expanding in a fair way for new runners.

I have been watching Simplys tournament on YouTube and it’s the reason I looked into the speedrun records and registered on here about two weeks ago. So yeah I think it’s a great time to get new people. I know everyone is different but I probably wouldn’t have signed up here and actually played if the record was unbeatable or if I had to do 50min runs of RSG to start with.

Most of the fun was watching the top runs and being like ‘I could do that’ and then trying your best (and failing when you realise how hard it is). I had a modest goal to get into the top ten of SSG but seems virtual impossible (and new times will still be incoming from old versions as well) unless I quit work and become a full time twitch streamer 😂

I don’t have any solutions though, just adding my perspective as a recent convert

Look forward to your 1.16.100 exclusive tournament Wilbor 😃

It's definitely a grind to get a good time so much rng especially now but a tournament with pre picked seeds would definitely be possible.( Maybe not organised by me though haha) Problem would be getting the top runners on board as in the interest of fairness it would have to be played on the same version. I found bigdorsey78 on twitch going for the ssg top ten and he recently managed to do it after a grind. You and him are exactly the type of people we want to encourage to continue trying though hence why some kind of incentive to continue is needed. Like I said in my initial post I'm trying to motivate myself to continue too.

Definitely something to think about then. But how many would get onboard/be willing to update to 1.16.100? We'd need a good host too. (Not me lol)
