Hi, fellows! Just got a notification that my MG speedrun world record has been beaten. Great job, Dimazn1, nicely done!!! I've looked the speedrun through very attentively and seems like I've got some questions...not to the speedruner, but to the verification) Don't think that I'm trying to get back the leadership (God, no), I just want to propose some rearrangements in the process of verification itself.
First of all there definitely should be a distinction between PS1, PC and, as we are having now, PC RUSSIAN version of the game and therefore this versions should have their own prize places. I can't tell for the whole game as I haven't done any deep analysis yet, but the main distinctive feature of PC and PC RUSSIAN version is the duration of audio messages. For example, the 2nd message from Judith Harroway in Recycle Room is 5 seconds shorter in Russian, than it is in English. The longest message to Karne in Rainbow Room is even 30 seconds shorter in Russian, than in English, which puts the speedruners in unequal conditions. I'm from russian-speaking country and also have the PC Russian version of the game, but used common european version just to be more fair.
Secondly, is it proper to become a moderator, verify yourself and count the speedrun? It's just a question, nothing personal)))
And finally, as I'm preparing another MG speedrun and don't want it to be denied, I need some help with RivaTuner from those who managed to use it during playthrough recording. The game just won't start as far as RivaTuner is activated.
Thanks for your time and let me know if there are any changes accepted afterwards!)
Hello!
Regarding the language (voice and text), I was guided by the general rules of speedrun.com and also by the rules for this game. According to the general rules, speedrunners are not prohibited from using localizations other than English (unless prohibited by the rules for the game/category). The rules of the game also do not prohibit using other localizations of the game.
Moreover, in order to achieve better results, a non-English language is used for some games (most often these are Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, French, German, Arabic, Korean, Italian). Examples of such games are GTA Vice City, Batman: Arkham City, The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Bros. series, Fable, Hollow Knight, etc.
Is a separate category required for Russian localization - I think not (at least for now) for the following reasons:
-
Russian localization does not change the basic gameplay;
-
there are not enough participants in the leaderboard to divide the game into categories due to different localizations of the game.
Answering the second question: yes, moderators and supermoderators can check their runs (otherwise my run would most likely not have been verified). You can read more about the moderation rules https://www.speedrun.com/ru-RU/support/learn/moderation-rules.
As for RivaTuner settings - I will try to write my program settings and advice in general on capturing gameplay in this topic. I hope that other participants will share their advice.
As for the FPS limitation, I use the RivaTuner program with the settings shown in the screenshot. These settings allow you to limit the frame rate of the game to 30 FPS. However, with these settings, RivaTuner does not display the frame counter on the screen (I use a third-party overlay to display the frame counter). If you want RivaTuner to display the frame counter, change the "Show On-Screen Display" parameter to "ON".
Why don't I use RivaTuner to display frames? On the vanilla version of the game, when displaying the frame counter through RivaTuner, the FPS number becomes very low (from 18 to 25). Because of this, I use the standard utility for Windows 10-11 "Game bar" to display frames. Also, the Nvidia overlay works well for displaying FPS (if you have a modern video card from this company).
As for capturing gameplay, I came to the conclusion that the game in window mode (using dxwnd or D3DWindower) produces no more than 28 FPS (this was previously written about by participants in other posts). In this regard, I decided to capture the game in full-screen mode.
When capturing a game in full-screen mode, I found it inconvenient to record and play the game on the same computer. Playing in full-screen mode does not allow you to control the broadcast/video recording and monitor the run timer. I also had problems with disabling character control when capturing video (this was fixed only with alt + tab). Therefore, the only acceptable capture method for me was capturing video directly from a second computer/laptop via a capture card (the broadcast is on one computer, the game is on the second).
If you still want to play in windowed mode, you can try using a virtual machine. This will allow you to run the game in full-screen mode on a virtual machine, while simply capturing the virtual machine window with your video capture program. This method worked for me too, but there may be problems with hardware compatibility.
One option would be to run the game on window with DXWnD, D3D Windower etc, and then use Lossless Scaling or Magpie to scale it up to borderless window. That trick would allow you to jump from the fullscreen into the desktop, and it might not affect the recording softwares.
Either way, this game would desperately need some kind of fix patch from someone who knows his way around with old game modding.
I wonder if it is possible to launch the game via DXWnD using the start parameter to use 1 processor core? (the game does not crash in single-core mode). In this regard, the Piexoto patch simplifies enabling single-core mode, but I have not found a way to start the game via this patch in windowed mode.
Peixoto's patches are basically bare boned generic patches for multiple games, they only add basic compatibility, but does not fix the obvious issues the games have on modern systems. Also, originally MGU only worked on fullscreen 480p resolution, there was no other options, further making it frustrating to run.
