but I have a question: why do you do offroad missions in 3 but not in VC?

in answer to this question:
GTA III AM is clearly and unambiguously defined in the stat menu: https://imgur.com/a/aN8spr4
Unfortunately VC doesn't have this stat so we can't use that for the definition. However in GTA 3 all 73 missions that contribute to the counter (which includes off road missions) also change the filename, so the definition of VC became "anything that changes the filename" - and this doesn't include off road missions.
AM SA has always been a bit controversial. People didn't want to apply the 3/VC definition because it made it to similar to 100% - Other proposed definitions would include things like arcade games. Check out this thread from 4 years ago to get an idea- https://www.speedrun.com/gtasa/thread/vzy0o/1#1utc4

Ultimately without a clear in game definition for SA AM, an arbitrary decision has to be made over the definition and not everyone will agree. It's the same with any category that isn't any% and 100% (and to an extent these two categories can also be considered arbitrary). All the categories are arbitrary WinWaker

Maybe we should take all the proposed AM definitions, stick them in CE and call it a day

Thread: PAL WR Issue

Started by: mamamia1001mamamia1001

I was interested in looking up what the PAL any% WRs are so looked it up on the site and there are a few issues with the submitted runs.

Filtering it by PAL N64, there are only two runs with videos - The first video ("wr") doesn't work, and the second video is actually the Japanese version. I hunted around on the runner's youtube for the "wr" run - I managed to find it but it's actually the Gamecube version. (note- PAL GC is actually the same as NTSC GC).

There's 2 runs with videos for Wii VC PAL and Wii U VC PAL (both are "true" pal versions unlike the Gamecube) - These are both fine.

I know no one actually cares about PAL and the runs themselves are like #700 on the main leaderboard, and that's why the errors likely went through - but imo it looks sloppy to have this kind of error for a version wr. I think that there should be more care taken in verifying runs in contention for a version wr. (Especially when someone submits a 21min N64 PAL run) - For both these errors to go through the verifier must not have even opened the video.

eta: here is the "true pal" wr according to the leaderboard (the one that's actually the gc version)

The rating icon is from the UK before PEGI became legally enforceable. It's the same rating we use on films and it made it illegal for anyone under 18 to buy the game (it was the only thing we had back then that achieved this). It's why the UK didn't give a fuck about Hot Coffee because you already had to be over 18 to buy the game.

This belongs here I guess....

For the duration of the video I was not pressing any buttons (until the end where I tried to regain control and crashed), I reckon this would have gone on indefinitely

I had an idea which lead to another idea:

Allow users to favourite certain runs, for example a WR or former WR run they are learning from.

Allow mods of a game to highlight certain runs in the leaderboard. The obvious highlight will always be the current WR, but you could also highlight good runs that show off different strats. For example in GTA 3 Adam's PB is a good reference for pre-duping strats in Portland, and Oasiz's is a good reference for pre-dodo strats in Shoreside. You could also use it to just to show off older runs that were really good for their time but now are obsolete because of better strats/glitches. If the player has beaten it since you could have it appear like how runs that are on slower consoles do for players who have a better time in a different platform.

categories should be defined by goals not by route choices

Better example:

This was the OOT any% route before the wrong warp to Ganon's castle was discovered (the reason the new route is used is because it's faster). Here the credits are triggered from inside the second dungeon, notably the actual credits scene was glitched but it still counted. This method of beating OOT lives on in the 'Ganonless' category

This is a TAS that executes the credits via arbitrary code execution and since it's also been done by RTA runners:

At the risk of comparing apples and oranges:

This is 'Any%' - It's silly and uncompetitive - loads of people have tied it - but it's still 'Any%' because it triggers the credits. The main speedrunning category for this game is 'Any% glitchless'. If something similar was found in GTA3 we can always make 'Beat The Exchange' the main category. I just have an issue with using the label 'Any%' if we're not triggering the credits because in every speedgame I can think of 'Any%' means triggering the credits.

Forum: Grand Theft Auto III

Thread: Categories

I think that if a way to trigger the credits outside The Exchange was found that it should still count as Any%. If only for consistency with other speedruns, 'any%' is always defined as triggering the credits by any means necessary. If people don't like it then we can make 'Kill Catalina' or 'Beat The Exchange' the 'main category' for the game, but we shouldn't call it 'any%'.

"Rolling the credits in some random mission does NOT mean that you managed to beat the game. " - This echoes the main argument people when claiming that glitching shouldn't be allowed in speedruns. What happens if someone found a way to skip all of the game and only have to do 'The Exchange', would you say that it didn't count because you skipped most of the game and therefore you didn't really beat it? What about only skipping the half of the game, would that count? If we're not careful we may end up adding loads of arbitrary caveats to what you can and can't do to 'beat the game'. Having it as 'trigger the credits' keeps it unambiguous. I guess S' suggestion about memory values also does this, but it's not very intuitive - and we may run it problems verifying it. Credits trigger can always be verified by video at least.

Shoutouts to Patrick for pointing out that this possible:

to do it spam S and jump

obviously this is faster than Gael's replay strats but it is also riskier. you can't do it after the Blow Fish death warp as it only works if you die on a mission, it will need to be timed what's fastest overall.

It only seems to work if you're on a mission

(I used dirty cheats to turn off on-mission flag)

OK I thought I would make a written route of the new Portland for anyone confused:

Here's what you do differently:

1.
(safe)
During Luigi's Girls make a replay of the Hospital Tutorial as Misty is getting in the car. (The Hospital Tutorial is not there on the mission). You can activate it after you get the police car, this will mean that there will be 2 police cars when you death warp from Taking out the Laundry, so you have more chance of getting a police car. Make sure that you're in the police car fully and that it's away from the parking spot, otherwise it might despawn. You need to be in the general vicinity of the Hospital for it work. Optimally this might slower as you have to get out the car, but it does make getting a police car after Taking out the Laundry a lot more likely. Please see Gael's video on the top of page 2 for the video.

(risky)
Instead of the above you can jump out of the hospital tutorial each time you die, see my video in the next post.

2. During Mike Lips Last Lunch get a replay of this rampage (Shotgun primary location) - http://www.cheathappens.com/features/gta3/gta3_showscreen.asp?p=rampages-p61.jpg&r=x

You can drive your car down there on the way to St. Mark's Bistro

Alternative

Get the primary m16 rampage replay during Don't Spank My Bitch up. http://www.cheathappens.com/features/gta3/gta3_showscreen.asp?p=rampages-p31.jpg&r=x

Vegeto says that the first one is faster by a few seconds, though it is easier to get stuck or knock into something. It's worth mentioning that you can't use hospital replay strats with the second option.

3. Using this rampage, you need the rampage timer running during Ciprani's Chauffeur, there a couple of possibilities here:

(not recommended)

Get 2 stars during Van Heist so you can steal a police car afterwards and rampage start Vigilante, you then disable Vigilante to turn off the mission on flag with the rampage still running. You can then just walk into the Ciprani's Chauffeur marker with the rampage timer running. This is good because you waste less time waiting for it to run out but it's risky because you might end up with a wanted start on Ciprani's Chauffeur and then you can't visit the Laundry. This problem can be avoided because there is a cop bride you can get by taking the ramps at the park in Chinatown, you have time because of the Rampage timer, but less time for taking another Rampage.

(Safe)

Rampage start Ciprani's Chauffeur

4. Finish Cirprani's Chauffeur, the timer should still be running. Take 3 Vans, then take it again when the timer runs out. Kill your self, pray for a police car (see Powdinet's first post in the thread which is the second overall). Use the police car and shotgun to do The Pick-Up

5. You need to make a replay of this rampage, it is the primary rocket rampage. http://www.cheathappens.com/features/gta3/gta3_showscreen.asp?p=rampages-p41.jpg&r=x

There's a few options here, the first 2 suggestions need to be done during step 3:

(a bit risky)

Use safe strat from step 3, and make it during Ciprani's Chauffeur. Use have about 10s of error time.

(safe)

Make it during Salvatore's Called a Meeting. This is slower than doing it on Ciprani's Chauffeur as on CC the rampage timer is going anyway, however it is a lot safer and if you get police star on CC you will be able to get the cop bride.

6. Use that rampage to rampage start Chaperone.

7. Make a replay of this rampage during Chaperone, it is the Secondary Rocket Rampage. http://www.cheathappens.com/features/gta3/gta3_showscreen.asp?p=rampages-p42.jpg&r=x
Activate it as soon as the first rampage finishes during Chaperone.

8. Finish Chaperone and start Cutting the Grass. The rampage timer should still be running. Pick-up this rampage http://www.cheathappens.com/features/gta3/gta3_showscreen.asp?p=rampages-p51.jpg&r=x - it is the primary AK rampage

Again a couple of options here:

(Risky)

Take the Mafia sentinal straight to the Rampage to activate as soon as possible and then get the taxi

(Safe)

Get Taxi first

9. Finish Cutting the Grass and then pick up Triads and Tribulations before the timer runs out, wait for timer to run out and take T&T again. Kill yourself. Lack of weapons is not a problem so take anything for Blow Fish.

For steps 6-9 see Gael's video at the top of page 2.

10. Death warp on Blow Fish. If you haven't yet activated the hospital tutorial because you're using the new strats, this one isn't worth it. Activate the bomb as you drive into the complex and it should go off as you get out the van. After the mission has ended try and burn yourself or just let the Triads shoot you. Take a car to Bomb Da Base. See Tenshotstv's pb for this.

I think for 3vans dupe it's best to get the shotgun rampage on the way St. Marks in mike lips, the alleyway it's in joins up with the road you use to get there anyway. The m16 rampage by Luigi's seems pretty far out from watching tenshots run
