Recently taken to route this game out, I’m one of those weird people who is pedantic enough to take more enjoyment out of routing a game than running it, and thought I would share what I find here. I have been working mostly on the first 3 chapters and the first thing I see is that the early game is going to be more about optimizing driving and driving routes than anything else so that is most likely where the bulk of my efforts will fall.

Something that may be worth looking into is tuning the Jefferson Provincial you get, the way I see it is that ot is in the top 3 cars of the 40s era so it is worth keeping regardless and if you can do it both efficiently and early enough it may be worth it even if you will abandon it for a better car later on. The amount of driving you do in the car to me seems logical it being worth upgrading, the time saved getting to the 6 gas stations alone could be a positive time save. The upgrade takes top speed to 97mph from 91mph (6-7% better) but the main benifit is the increase in the power from 129hp to 158hp (18-19% better).

Normally cash would be an issue but I found that robbing the gun shop near Mike's junkyard seems to get $400-600 (ran it 4 times and each time I got between these figures) more than enough to get the upgrade. It is on route in the end of chapter 2 and takes 20-40secs max to rob the shop, you run in head shot the owner then take the cash from the till and go back to your car, you could even arm up with guns if you want to (may be helpful later haven’t tested that far in yet).

2 options on where and when to get the car upgraded they will need to be timed out to see which is the better option.

  1. On the drive to Derek’s in Chapter 3 you go past the garage on route so it is a nice place to upgrade. You can go in; fix the car here instead of at your garage at Joe’s, get the upgrade and change the plates if needed and go on to Derek’s from there.

  2. Slightly earlier you will need to get atleast 450 from the gun shop for this one. Straight after you rob the gun shop you go to the garage around the corner; fix your car, upgrade your car and change the plates, if needed and money allows, and finish the mission as normal. It is a bit off route but you get the faster car for the drive to steal the other car and the drive back to Joe’s.

Sweden

The fastest way to upgrade your car is right when you get it (In Chapter 2) and Joe tells you to go to the mechanic and change your plates. Joe even pays for all the upgrades :)

I went back in the game to have a look if you could upgrade the car to the next level in chapter 3, but no luck. i guess you get access to the second upgrade in the "50s" at chapter 7.

Keep on looking tho! i know we can get sub 3 hours when we know all the glitches and skips!

How did I miss that you could get that free upgrade. The second upgrade doesn't seem worth it. It is only a handling improvement and by the time it is open the Jefferson Provincial is only better than 4 of the stock cars in the 50s, excluding the trucks and vans, you would be better off just taking a random car and upgrading that.

I was looking at the petrol stamp route as I see it there is 3 viable routes. It is hard to nail down which is the best as timing it will alway be off due to traffic and and other factors but here are the options I came up with on this map.

Hi again, I drew out the route i take in Chapter 3. I think this is the fastest one. The clock in the corner will be at the halfway to midnight mark when you reach the 6th station.

There are a few cool routes in this chapter that I use a lot in the other chapters.

4-5: I drive trough the park for optimal "straightness" ? :P 5-6: I use the train tracks as a highway and it give you a great position to the last station.

Hello guys :)

in Chapter 1, there is a little glitch that makes us able to skip the balcony shooting (before the machinegun shooting), saving us around 15 seconds. The glitch is not 100% repeatable, happened once offline and 1 online in a random testing, but i was able to 2:43 Chapter1 with a really bad start (so it's doable sub 2:40)

in Chapter 6, second O'Neal fight, most of the time with a hard combo (the one with the right mouse button) is enough to defeat him

I found a minor glitch/bug (saves like a second or two) ... On chapter 3, when you drop off Maria in front of the hospital. When you're driving towards the hospital, when you're right in front make a hard handbrake turn (still driving) facing towards the exit of the hospital. The car then will start making automatic donuts and will teleport maria somewhere (make sure you have space to have the car turn around when it starts making donuts, cause if it hits some object it cancels the teleportation) . Saves about 3-4 seconds, I dunno :p Check my PB to see it.

So I have had trouble in Chapter 1. After throwing the Grenade, this Soldier who opens the first door to the hallways got stuck in the door where the 2 itialian guys are. That was not every once in a while, that was a constant thing, losing a bunch of time!

Normally i turn V-Sync off in every game, but turning it on for Mafia 2 somehow fixed the problem for me. Tried it twice now and the Soldier got through the door without any problems!

Also: I had this super slow motion stuff going on in Chapter 2 after stealing the white car & in Chapter 4 after the mall heist. And again: turning V-Sync on solved the prob for me.

Just in case someone is having the same issues, try it out and let us know!

However.. I dont know if you guys noticed but.. The map of DeNN1Sk0 for the skip on chapter 8 isnt accurate.

You can drop down the highway to the 2nd selling spot, however its not at the point on DeNN1Sk0´s map. its a little bit later c:

ive been practicing Mafia 2 for awhile and came across this;

In chapter 3 when u arrive at Pappalardo's warehouse u get a job to lift crates into a truck. Ive 'found' a way to speed up your movement by about 2x by holding RMB whilst walking.

This is consistent and will always happen, saves maybe a couple of seconds. (sorry if this has been found before but neither the wr nor the 2nd place runner uses this strat)

I was looking at Chapter 5 and found this route to el greco. It saves around 10 seconds compared to the usual bridge-alley drop route. It's also slightly more consistent, at least for me. In my opinion, the regular run has two tough spots: the turn-in for bridge might get screwed with traffic, and the alley-drop might backfire terribly. This one has the last right hand turn (near Vito's appartment) that sometimes has heavy traffic, but most of the time there's a line either on road or through sidewalk.

I've been tinkering with this C4 door glitch for some time now, and I think it's now solid enough to share for everyone, with 8-10second gain Here's the steps for it (times are on-screen timer, not video time): 29s: take cover at left edge of that small piece of wall 31.5s: when Joe says "off my back", move right across the corner (you know you did it right when Joe abandons his lockpicking animation) 37-41s: stay at the 4th stair, while Joe does small pauses between animations. you can start running when Joe gets up that second part of stairs. Then just carry on up as usual.

IF Joe gets stuck after leaving the first platform in 41s, just run past him and all the way upstairs to the final platform (the one with the big red Firehose box). this will trigger Joe to continue up, it costs some time, but should still be few seconds faster than regular way

another find of Kabalies' that he's not yet submitted to the forums Basically all you need to do is find a cop car and allign it just outside the trigger, get a secondary car to push the cop car with (into the trigger), skip the cutscene and jump up.

about time we update this thread a little:

[big][big]**C12 GATE SKIP:**[/big][/big] Old strat, but not listed anywhere so here we go. Just crash into the gate.

[big][big]C10 FASTER SHOOTOUT:[/big][/big] The key to keeping this door open is not killing the pistol guy directly right of the bar so avoid killing him. Take some time to practice this before applying it to your run.

[big][big]C10 COP TRIGGER BYPASS ROUTE[/big][/big] Going the route i take in the video completely bypasses the cop trigger. Make sure to watch the entire video to see the full new route to the bridge found by Kabalies.

[big][big]C1 SHOOTING INSTEAD OF GRENADE[/big][/big] Basically aiming and pressing the "switch shoulder" button (default is middle mouse button) saves a little bit of time.

[big][big]__C13 FASTER SHOOTOUT:__[/big][/big] Pretty risky and i recommend you practice this alot before applying it to a run, i'll show a safer way of doing the shootout too.

[big][big]__C13 SAFER SHOOTOUT:__[/big][/big] Safer way of doing the shootout (naturally a little slower) Make sure to practice this one too, as going up the stairs too quickly will kill Vito instantly.

[big][big]__C9 FAST SHOOTOUT:__[/big][/big] Simple, shoot the gas tanks of the first and third car and just shoot the guys in the 2nd car.

Chapter 15 grenade strats, I've used them for ages while others used all nades on c14. I'd say saving 2 for this is definitely worth it. As seen on minimap, the enemies spawn in 3 groups, 1&2 get killed by first nade.
