In case you are having trouble timing Wind Bombs, here is a video with controller cam:
Important to note: You can not just blindly mash B, as you will just keep throwing the bomb instead
Also I find it very hard to do it without taking damage first or without midjumping (like against Whispy Woods).
It's possible to do it next to a boss (again, Whispy Woods is a great example) without taking damage, but against flying bosses (such as Hyness and Kracko), it feels like very precise for me...
Pratice is key, I assume.
I’ve mashed B and it’s been working fine. if your not in a sprint while your in the air, you not going to try and do a bomb roll. Instead you just take out a bomb, in which case you can just spam it. However this is very inconsistent on certain bosses. However, if your right next to a boss (for example buff king Dedede in his level 1 combo for the skip). if you pause (not actual game pause) or stay and place just long enough and make sure you’ve lost all momentum then do a short hop, you can spam it to your hearts content and it’ll work. However I’ve only gotten it to work on Dedede since his hitbox during the example is ground level and tall due to his held up arms. And I’ve gotten a lower king Dedede and whispy woods time then the WR. Will make a video showing this later.
Also if your making a video to show people how to do the bomb spam, you probably shouldn’t have done it on whispy woods, as he is so easy due to his stationary position. It’s not hard to pull off for him and anyone can do it in a heartbeat without learning anything from it, seeing as all you have to do is go to the top of the screen and spam attack. Now a video showcasing the buttonpresses for say metaknight’s 2nd form as he’s preparing in mid air to split into two would be a good example as it’s actually precise and not well understood. It’s especially precise seeing as you do a hover bomb underneath him and then link it into a bomb spam, which is an extremely snug trick that is very hard to pull off.
Now I’m pretty sure this “glitch” is happening because when kirby is in a neutral state of vertical movement (non sprinting) when you tap the attack button, without any directional input like up or down, Kirby first takes out the bomb. He doesn’t immediately throw it, like when he rolls the bomb when your in sprint mode or when you hold a directional input. Instead he holds it and allows you to take it with you and freely move around. Now when Kirby immediately takes out a bomb and creating a new bomb entity, the game automatically makes the bomb have a hitbox the frame it’s spawned. So Kirby can continually explode bombs as fast as he can spawn them. But normally you have to wait to throw these bombs as Kirby has to wait for the bomb to to explode and despawn. But when you do the Air bomb spam like in KirbyQT’s WR vid, the bomb immediately explodes and despawns the frame after its spawned from Kirby. Which makes Kirby able to immediately reach to spawn a bomb on the next frame. This will go on for as long as Kirby is against an enemy’s hitbox in the right way and isn’t touching the ground. So the order is this: Frame 1 - Kirby reaches for bomb Frame 2 - Kirby spawns bomb and bomb is given hitbox Frame 3 - bomb explodes (repeats) Frame 4 - Kirby reaches for bomb Frame 5 - etc.
There’s like more frames in between these but I don’t have a frame by frame replay, and the multiple layered explosion effects are in way. But hey that’s just a Theory, A game theory. (Sorry)
I still have no clue even how to do the bomb ablitity even with watching all these vids, makes no sense to me.
I’ve gotten 2:50 runs with this strat, and I’ve only found out about it earlier today with only about an hour of practice between my classes. Which is a huge increase from my regular runs. But I’m not putting a run in the boards until I get a sub 2:40 or 2:45.
Just watch KirbyQT’s WR video and what I said earlier and try to match his movements in the video. Don’t try it on any other boss other then whispywoods for now as that requires no spacing basically since you just against him at all times. Then once you’ve gotten that down and understand it better, try it on King dedede’s phase skip with what I said earlier. This will help you practice using it on a somewhat moving enemy.
And just take it from there and experiment.

Also expect a separate guide on how to do the air bomb spam “glitch” soon too. I just need to do more research and frame by frames to get a more understanding of it to increase its consistency.
Also can we get an actual term for it instead of saying “the air bomb spam glitch”. I saw KirbyQT or Demo get to come up with the name of the strat/tech. Since Demo brought to the forum’s attention and kirbyQT perfected it so well already that we can better analyze it.
I'm currently on a small vacation, so I've no time. I've gotten a 11.4x on Whispy and a low 45 after Dedede, but due to mistakes and missed skips I haven't them recorded (sometimes it were practice runs).
Once I return I'll try to get a better time or do some boss strats (as you've mentioned).
Maybe it is possible to utilize wind bombs on some mini bosses as well. We'll see soon. ;)
But how do you stay still while rolling bombs? Whenever I do it I can stay still between some but between others I will move up to the length of Poppy Bros Jr. himself.
That tough to do. For this I'm using a visual queue, which is more consistent for me. I'm looking at the left feet of Poppy Bros Jr.: The moment it goes to the original position, I press B 2-3 times.
It feels like a one frame window (or two) to hit, so I create a little bit of safety distance in case I move forward (which is very likely).
