SM64 is now coming to Switch. Will it be considered an emulator for speedrunning?

It is technically a Virtual Console esque thing imo, mods will have to respond, I don't think I can give a good enough statement.

Wait no, it's a port. Maybe there's just gonna be a new category. For VC it would have to be a Virtual Console, but this is different. Maybe we just follow what the 2D Mario community did when All-Stars came out.

They're not remakes like the 2D All-Stars. The trailer I saw didn't have any better textures.

I believe they're using the shindou version for all regions because the shindou sound effects can be heard in the trailer. If so, it will be practically useless for serious runs.

Everything else is still there, just no major skips now. 3D All-Stars can still be used for 70. 120 as well (if you don't do lblj).

Or maybe we'll find a new way to pass the 50 star door

I mean I think that switch would just become grouped with shindou, but I don't know what the community has done with it. Idk if it's allowed on leaderboards, or if it's a cat extension or something.

possibly it will depend on regions? Maybe it was showcasing the japanese shindou version but not the usa version. We have to wait and see

Who cares if this is the Shindō Pak Taiō version? I am still very excited to play the game cough (whispers) properly.

Since Shindou isn't listed on this leaderboard, I think this Switch port will be listed as another game. Either that or it'll be another option on the leaderboard like WiiVC and EMU.
