First you may not have unlocked all characters so far. So here is how to do so:

Toad: Collect 40 coins in challenges mode Magikoopa: Collect 45 coins in challenges mode Paratroopa: Collect 50 coins in challenges mode Birdo: Collect 55 coins in challenges mode

Toadette/Nabbit/Rosalina: Buy the DLC packs for the respective characters Gold Mario: Buy all the DLC packs

So now youre maybe asking yourself why your characters don't hit as far as these in the runs. Maybe that's because you didnt unlock the Star characters. A star character can be unlocked by beating the respective character in the coin challenges mode -> charcter match. For example: Beat Waluigi in the coin challenge mode and then you unlock star Waluigi. Star Waluigi can now hit way further than the normal Waluigi. Press R in the character selection menu. DLC Star characters are unlocked by default.

Now you may not be sure which character to use in the run. Here are some points your character should fulfill:

-Decent Shot range, optimally over 250m or 270yds, the further the better -Fast shot animations, look at the shot animations from peach and luigi to see the difference -If you are new to speedrunning use a character with a straight shot direction. -If you are new then also dont use characters with bad control because it can screw you up pretty bad.

In conclusion I recommend playing with Mario when you are new. He has a straight shot, fast animations and decent control. Bowser when you are more advanced. He has the best shot distance, fast animations but terrible control.

I dont recommend playing: Peach, Toad, Paratroopa, Gold Mario, Toadette.
