Confused with what all the speedrunning terms mean? This will help!

Minor update 2023/3/10: Fixed formatting, new layout broke it for some reason.

Weapons:

Gun 1 - Blaster - Best to use when theres no reason to use any other weapon.

Gun 2 - Bouncer, or bnc for short. For the labrat blocks, colony2 blocks as Jazz/Lori (higher shooting spots) and niche use against enemies.

Gun 3 - Ice/Freezer. Officially called frostbiter, but we all call it ice anyway. Used for running through enemies, keeping Devan still (Spaz) and the robot freeze glitch.

Gun 4 - Seekers/rockets - Used for defeating the beach 2 boss quickly and those pesky ravens in the cold inferno.

Gun 5 - RF missiles. RF is short for really fast. An excellent damage dealer and has utility in boosting you off walls, spazkicks and midair. The best unstacked DPS (when powered).

Gun 6 - Toaster. Also called flamethrower or fire. Has the second best unstacked DPS and allows instant denotation of TNT. Can wipe out enemies and blocks instantly when pre-fired in advance.

Gun 7 - TNT. Good for getting up places, wiping out blocks, extending spazkicks, killing off chases and bruising Devan hard (Jazz/Lori). Has the best DPS when stacked.

Gun 8 - Pepperspray. Also called pepper. It's only a backup against RF or toaster.

Gun 9 - Elecroblaster. Also called EB for short. It's mainly for death warps (read below) and can be used to grab the inferno shield and RF PU in medivo 2.

Other general terms:

PU - Powerup - Oddly, the toaster powerup does not do more DPS in single player, but does in multiplayer.

DPS - Damage per second

Spaz tech:

Wallclimb/clip - getting stuck inside a wall to clip out of it. It requires special timing of doublejump and buttstomp.

Kickspam/Spamkick - A glitch that allows Spaz to repeatedly spam kicks with no cooldown, killing bosses very quickly. Hold on down and jump when inside a boss.

RF kick - Firing RF just right before a kick to get a speed boost. Useful for psych1.

Lori tech:

Wallkick/Wall clip - A carefully positioned/timed kick that clips you through walls. The walls must be 16 pixels wide or less.

Polekick/Pole clip - A carefully positioned/timed kick that clips you through poles.

Kickboost/Speedkick - A carefully positioned/timed kick that gives you a massive boost of speed. Works on bomb lizards, flying suckers and some bosses. You can still get a speed boost even if you don't position optimally.

Kickdance - Kick inside the boss closely while blinking or using a shield to maximize damage output. Kick from too far away though, and you'll fling out! Getting hurt should also be minimized as much as possible.

Jazz tech

Upperslice - Uppercut inside the boss while blinking or using a shield to maximize damage output in RTA. Getting hurt should be minimized as much as possible.

Copter ear tech:

Copterhurt/Copterboost - A form of damage boost done while using copter ears. It puts you up vertically. Is extra useful for Lori since her hurt animation is longer, which makes it go even higher.

Hyperboost/TNT boost - Another form of damage boost by letting off TNT and getting hurt while using copter ears at the same time. Lori can go a little higher due to her longer hurt animation.

Universal tech:

TNT climb/jump - A useful trick that allows you to go up by getting TNT to explode below you, setting off a chain for each one you fire right after. The "Funky climb" is a notable example.

Damage boost - Deliberately getting hurt in order to beat the game faster.

Death Warp - Firing at a checkpoint then dying intentionally in order to spawn at it. Gun 9 is used.

Walljump - A highly difficult trick where you clip onto a wall to jump off it immediately. Is frame perfect, normally reserved for TAS.

Golden Jump - A high jump performed by revving up the run button many times while standing, then releasing it. Only truly useful for Lori, but everyone can do it.

Water skip - An oversight exploit in the second beach level that allows you to not spawn the water at all. Simply hold on jump before the level begins (and don't let go).

Phase skip - Deactivating the Beach 2 boss crabs or not letting Devan transform.

RNG manip - Using certain actions and positions to manipulate what move the queen will perform next. Save states are often used.

RF climb - Fire it against walls for a small vertical and/or horizontal speed boost.

RF jump - Has more use for Spaz. Fire RF, then run into the projectiles for a small speed boost.

Buttsnap or Buttstomp cancel - An almost pixel perfect jump where you touch an edge with buttstomp from below, but the animation is cancelled. Negates air drag and animation windup.

Rolljump - A pixel perfect timed jump where you jump off a squared corner instantly - without being slowed down to jump again. Your sprite will always be in ball form when you perform it successfully.

Fastfall/Quickfall - A pixel perfect trick where you fall against the very corner of a tile, then drop against it immediately. You get instant fast falling speed, instead of having to wait a bit. TNT boost - Instantly activating TNT on the floor with toaster and running against it to boost horizontal speed. Useful for hell1 as Lori.

General Speedrun Terminology (for total speedrun newbs);

Strat - Short for strategy. Basically a method to beat the game faster.

WR - World Record

PB - Personal Best

SoB - Sum of bests

Choke - Being at PB/WR pace, then killing it.

Splits - Recorded time segments from a full-game or episode run.

RNG - Random number generator

Clip - Getting stuck inside or going through walls

OoB - Out of bounds. Often used for 3D games.

RTA - Real time attack. Using real world time to calculate runs. Also used to refer to human-level, fullgame play.

IGT - In-game time. This game does not have one.

TAS - Tool Assisted Speedrun or Tool Assisted Superplay

IL - Individual level. This game does not have IL leaderboards due to often requiring ammo from prior levels for optimal times.

Single segment - No resets were made in the middle of the run to correct mistakes - it's all done in one go.

Segmented - Stitched together optimal runs to make a full run. Often a collaborative project.
