Alright, so ur new here! great community to be in! so, basically, i recommend watching a few geography yt channels first. my top recommendation would be JackSucksAtGeography, but really anybody is fine. Then, do a few runs, i recommend something like south america first, or europe. Just use trial and error, until you get 100% on a few categories

# Middle Ground

Yo! Basically, trial and error, until you can get 100% on 193 un members in less than 10 mins, then ur considered a pro!

# Pro

trial and error, until u can get all continents + us states in < 1 minute, and world in < 5 mins, then ur considered a **master!**

Optimal languages for each "type" category (WIP)

Here is a list of the optimal languages for each individual quiz that exists on the SeTerra website. Considering there are so many different categories, I will not put all of them here right now, but hopefully I will be able to make a full list soon.

EDIT (24/09/2024) : As I haven't run this game in months now, I am not planning on completing this guide. You can use this as a reference to help you, or try to finish the list yourself. Good luck with your future runs. :)

The "optimal languages" are purely based on the number of characters it takes to type every country/district/city/etc. name in the quiz. I will only take in account languages that use the latin alphabet (that means excluding greek, russian, ukrainian, hebrew, etc.), as it would be inconvenient for a majority of runners. I will also provide the four best languages for each category (sometimes more if there are ties), in case there are certain characters that you are not able to type with your keyboard (such as ß, ð, etc.) in the most optimal language. Keep in mind that characters with diacritics (é, è, ï, ç, ñ, etc.) can be typed without them, and it will still count as correct ! (note : Ø can also be typed as "o", and it works too !")

Finally, some languages will appear as if they are not available for a certain game, but they can still be accessed by adding "?locale=XX" where XX is the code of the language you want to play as. However, it will sometimes result in some names not being translated - in that case, I will still put the language in the list. Although I am not sure if playing a half-translated game would really be "legal", determining whether a name is translated or not can sometimes be difficult. Not only do I not know most of the languages that are available, but sometimes several translations are possible (such as Luxembourg being translated as Luxemburg in Finnish in some categories, but as Luxembourg in others). Funnily enough, English happens to be a "hidden language" for several games, even when it's the default one ! Some languages still cannot be accessed even with this method, but if you can't find the fastest language in the list, here's how to get it ! I will put all "hidden languages" in italics in this list.

Why ALT+R reset might not work for you

I've been wondering for a while now why my Alt + R reset stopped working.
For me, it was because Geforce Experience uses this combination by default. So try to go to the overlay and deactivate this hotkey there.

Why the type category just got 10x harder and how to counteract it.

A couple changes have been made that create problems for speedrunners in the type category that did not exist before. Here

1️⃣ Spaces are required
Just adding a single character can significantly slow down times- especially when the space is used for most of the entries. This impacts runs such as the Regions of Malawi and the Parishes and Dependencies of Antigua and Barbuda.

2️⃣ No abbreviations
This is a big one that adds on many characters that used to be unnecessary. In Parishes and Dependencies of Antigua and Barbuda, players used to type "stjohn" but now what would be required is "saint john" which adds 4 extra characters to each entry (except "barbuda" of course)

3️⃣ No rounding down times
Your time could look so much better in the old version which times rounding down. If I earn 0h 0m 3s 999ms, it could just be 3s which could put someone at a tie even if their time was 25% worse in that scenario.

Now, how can you speed your time up?

1️⃣ Thinking ahead
If you just have one entry left, make sure you can instantly type it in and know its name before it is even its turn.

2️⃣ Finger pattern
This is one of the most important practices for speeding up your time. If you reset with ALT + R, you don't want your first keys to be letters that you type with those same fingers or hand. If there are 5 or less entries (with more than five entries it is time consuming), you can keep reseting until you get the ideal first entry, such as "Mohéli" which you can position your thumbs and index finger to type "mo" instantly without waiting a single milisecond (maybe a couple miliseconds.) Try to be aware of what fingers you are using and how to make it faster.

3️⃣ Practice
Make sure to practice! You might not get it on the first try, but from the first couple tries to my most recent try on some runs I have halved my times. You can practice by just typing into a notepad and there are some custom typing tests online that are helpful. I can't believe I forgot to mention this, but using pin mode before you move onto typing is always a good idea. It can help you really lock in the locations. Practicing your finger placement for words such as "Anjouan" can be very helpful, as some words with four and five letters in the relatively same place may need practice.

4️⃣ Don't go overboard
Just remember, you still don't need to use accents or capital letters to make words as short as possible.

Good luck on breaking some WRs and beating PRs. Just remember if you're not living up to your previous standards, just remember that some updates made it harder. I'm new to speed running and seterra, so some information may be incorrect. I hope this helped you a bit!
