A newbie who wants to learn how to speedrun

Hey guys i'am Really new here and i have never really done speedrunning. The game which i DO want to speedrun is Dark Souls III, I have been looking forward to it. Since i don't know about the glitches and i don't really wish to do a glitched run, i was kind of hoping to do a glitchless vanilla(?) run just the main bosses excluding extra and DLC ones. so if you guys have any pointers to tell me do tell because i'am actually kind of excited to do a Speedrun. Thank you again for your time

Hey there! Good to see you!

My advice for starting would be as follows:

1.) Get involved. Join the discord for the game you want to run and interact with the community. Ask plenty of questions and use the resources available to you. Talk to people. Don't be shy, we're here to help :)

2.) Learn as much as possible. Discords are usually the best place to talk and learn, but the forums page for the game you are running is also good. If you look on the 'guides' and 'resources' pages, there should be some materials to help you learn glitches and stuff. Also, current world record runs are a good place to see optimal strats and such.

3.) Have fun. It may sound cheesy, but speedrunning can require a lot of patience and tenacity at times, especially when practicing a hard glitch or strat, and having fun will make this easier. If you get frustrated easily, like I do, this can be a hard strategy to stick too, but it pays off tenfold in the end, as if you're not having fun, what are you doing?

So yeh, get involved, learn all you can, always have fun, and most importantly:

Go fast ;)

Gl with runs :)

YOULL NEVER MAKE IT! hey whats up! runners dont have to do tricks in their runs if they dont want to. take my sm64 run for example. its more of a lets play than anything. so feel free to just do your best. to learn more you can simply contact or watch other runners. the speedrunning community if very friendly and helpful to new comers. you might get a few haters if you become big though ;) good luck and h have fun!

i ACTUALLY forgot to ask the most important thing. i have setup livesplit somehow, did a test run as well. but how does it work like, how does it compare. does it take your past runtime and compare that or is it something else. And if i wanna stream the speedrun on my channel (which i think you can?) or do you HAVE to stream on this site?

You can right click and bring up the 'compare against' menu, u can compare against personal best, average, sum of best.

I'm not really sure what u mean with the second question. Obviously you stream on your channel. Could you maybe rephrase it please?

i was assuming that you have to stream your runs on the Speedruns LIVE twitch channel(if there is any?)

Essex, England

That's not how twitch works. You have your own channel, and stream from that.

For some games, you don't even need to stream your runs live on Twitch; a recording of your run will usually do. However, it's best to check the game's rules in order to make sure. As for Dark Souls III, it looks like a recording is fine.

I don't think any games require you to stream. If there are some, there's not many.

I never knew there were even games that require you to stream idk why they would but owell glad its not any games I enjoy ^_^

Super Mario Bros. doesn't really require it, but it says in their rules that to "maximize your chance of verification, streaming all your attempts and providing splits files is highly recommended."
