I'd nominate Stewie from this list since he is familiar with the game and does run it. I've been on vacation for a little over a week and have been offline most of the time. I'll try to knock out the queue when I'm back.

This is one of those situations where if this is really desired by a decent number of people, someone should step up and make a spreadsheet or develop their own site/database. Nothing prevents someone from doing that. I doubt another SRC page would be permitted to be created for runs involving the same game.

We got rid of the ILs long ago. So did SMB3 and some other Mario games because it was an overwhelming number of submissions (I've literally seen over 100 submissions of just ILs sitting in the queue and this was years ago when the community was not nearly this large) and many people don't find them that meaningful.

ILs for this game don't really provide any value and creates a lot of work for us when the majority of submissions are going to be tied for 1st or 2nd place anyway. 1st place being people who use fast accel, BBG or FPG to go slightly faster and 2nd place for those who just run through the level.

I definitely remember the days when we did have ILs and it was a huge mess. Aside from people grinding out those, you can have the situation of where someone does a warpless run, submits that and then all 32 levels from their run as well. That's 33 submissions. From one person.

In theory, if we opened that up, I could see our submission queue going up to 200-300 in a matter of a few days based on the size of the community these days.

This isn't a category we'd implement on the main leaderboard. I'd suggest trying on the meme (extensions) leaderboard.

Submit it anyway and we can look at it. Worst case scenario, we'll just reject it and say we can't determine you got a 5:13.

It really depends how many have the time to do it and the volume that we have. SMB1 is a pretty high volume game and a number of us have been rather busy lately. One or two is having hardware issues and unable to do it until it gets fixed. We are generally allowed up to three weeks from date of submission.

Sometimes runs are verified in less than a day, sometimes it might be a few weeks.

I've been extremely busy over the last several months personally due to work, but if I end up with a couple hours of free time today, I'll see about knocking out some of the backlog of runs.

I'll give some details on my setup as his setup is likely similar to mine.

First of all, the NES is modded with the NESRGB board (I also bought the optional component out board) which is where the higher quality signal comes from. Installing it requires soldering and drilling skills, so if you aren't experienced in doing that, I would recommend finding someone who will do that for you. You have some options of video output: Component (Red, Green, Blue cables), SCART and S-Video. Component and SCART are pretty even on video quality, while S-Video is a bit of a downgrade from those. Be aware if you do this mod, the built-in video ports, RF and Composite (Yellow cable) will no longer work unless you undo the whole mod. I'm using Component and I'm very pleased with it.

Next, you should get an upscaler such as an OSSC or a RetroTink to handle the video feed which produces higher quality video at higher resolutions such as 720p and 1080p. Those devices output HDMI which you would then run to your HD capture card.

So the flow that setup works basically like this: NES component output and audio output > OSSC/RetroTink component input and audio input OSSC/RetroTink HDMI output > HD capture card HDMI input

I'm using a CRT to play my games so that adds a piece of hardware (a component splitter or distribution amplifier) because I need to run the component signal to my TV because there's no HDMI.

So here's the flow with my specific setup just to make this more complicated: NES component output and audio output > Component splitter input Component splitter output 1 > CRT TV component and audio inputs Component splitter output 2 > OSSC/RetroTink component input and audio input OSSC/RetroTink HDMI output > HD capture card HDMI input

I don't know if this is an overwhelming amount of information, but these mods definitely make the setup somewhat more complicated.

Several points I want to make about this:

  • We can't see the framerate FCEUX.
  • This comparison isn't done on the original game, it's on the Pellsson ROM.
  • How well can your computer handle 2 emulators and encoding video at the same time?

I don't think we have an actual issue here. We time high level runs using patterns, not the time of the video for any% runs. We do time the video, yes, but in most cases for legitimate runs, the the difference between the video time and the bowser pattern is a couple frames at most. If all FCEUX runs were off by 0.2 seconds as you claim would be possible, this would have been noticed years ago as it kinda throws a red flag to us if there's a pretty significant difference between the timing of the video and the matching bowser pattern.

I'll make an addendum to what Darpey said.

Since you said you have to use the RF modulator, I'm assuming the TV does not have Composite (RCA) inputs. If that's the case or in the instance you don't mind the quality on your TV you can do it this way:

Still continue to run RF to your TV and use the Composite (RCA) jacks to the capture card. The NES can handle both fine simultaneously. I did it for 7 years. In this scenario, you're not required to get a different TV and you don't have to buy a splitter if you don't want to. The only equipment you'd absolutely have to buy would be the capture card.

Agreeing with Darpey, you can just play on your monitor with a capture card, but you have the added delay of modern screens plus the delay of the capture card processing the video on top of it. I'm pretty certain you'd have a rather difficult time adjusting to that.

I don't understand why you think you're entitled to an essay from us when you very obviously submit fake runs. It's a waste of our time and we get a fair amount of these. It takes away time we spend verifying legitimate runs.

Submitting TAS, stolen, spliced runs is a ban-able offense from the entire site. Keep that in mind.

A leaderboard already exists for that game, did you not search for it?

https://www.speedrun.com/vssmb

I suggest propose your request on that leaderboard's forums. We won't add it here because it's a different game.

You simply need to acquire an NTSC version of the ROM. Your current one says Super Mario Bros. (E). The E is for Europe which is the PAL version. You want one that says Super Mario Bros. (JU) or Super Mario Bros. (U). J is for Japan and U is for USA. You cannot just switch the region in the emulator menu, because the physics in the game are built differently on the ROM.

Friendly reminder for everyone that per site rules you cannot link or provide assistance in the forums of where to acquire the ROMs.

The Switch platform has been added. The Switch version is valid for all of the "All Four" categories. It is not permitted for "All Five" at this time.

You must use the built in "reset game" feature when switching between games. You cannot use any savestate or rewind functions during your run. Not even to switch games.

You may play the games in any order you wish for the "All Four" categories.

As a reminder, runs start when you press start on the title screen of the first game (1P/2P Select for SMB1/SMB3, SMB2 title screen and Mario/Luigi Select for SMB2J (Lost Levels)). Runs and segments end on touching the axe for SMB1 and SMB2J and entering the final door for SMB2USA and SMB3.

Switch version is permitted for the "J Timing" categories ONLY if you have Super Mario Collection (the Japanese version of All-Stars) and those categories have a significantly different set of rules, so please review them if you intend on running those categories.

We will wait and see until it's released and someone can test it. There is no definitive answer on something that hasn't even been released yet.

"Maybe, maybe not" is the answer for now.
