Yeah, just need to get TSK to come back and finish the tourney haha.
Hey guys. I have opened registration for an SMB1 Warpless tournament to start about a month from now. All skill levels are welcome to join. I have a few restreamers and commentators interested already, but I may be looking for a few more. The information about the tournament including the discord server and so forth are on the challonge site. Hope some of you will join and if you have questions, let me know.
Moving glitchless to the SMB1 from the SMBCE leaderboard would either: a} require us to manually recreate each run from scratch b} require us to ask every person who has submitted a run to that category to resubmit it on the SMB1 leaderboard
Glitchless isn't considered to be a serious category which is why it's on the CE board.
Glitchless categories in 2D Mario games historically have not been very popular and I don't imagine that will significantly change. Most runners and viewers are fascinated with breaking the game and find it more interesting to see cool "tricks."
Common NES Emulators: FCEUX, Nestopia, Bizhawk Common SNES Emulators: Snes9x, Bizhawk Banned SNES Emulators: ZSNES (accuracy/framerate issue)
There's so many emulators out there, I don't think it's reasonable to make an exhaustive list of what is and isn't allowed. We like to have data about the accuracy and especially the framerate before we start accepting runs from an emulator we don't know much about due to the level of optimization this game has where frames and milliseconds matter.
I would also stay away from web browser emulators and emulators on your mobile device (phone, tablet, etc).
I don't really see a need for it.
If running PAL was be popular and relevant enough, I'd maybe change my position on the matter.
Since PAL isn't its own category, putting the decimals for those you suggested would make all those PAL runs rank lower on the leaderboard than all of the NTSC runs of the same minutes and seconds.
I would suggest submitting one of your runs now. It looks like you already have a 4:59, I'd honestly submit that. The more data we have available, the better your chances are with getting a really good run accepted. We like to have a reasonable level of confidence that someone's run is legitimate when you start getting in the lower times. If you're running on emulator and you can, save your input files with your PBs. It's possible we may ask for those.
Also, make sure you read the rules and understand them so that a good time doesn't get rejected for something avoidable.

I mean I feel like I mentioned a while back that if some of you guys want to create your own separate board or site for these categories, feel free to do so. We already moderate about 40 meme categories along with the official categories. I'm not going to speak for the other mods, but I think that's plenty.
If you're getting bored with having that many categories, is it time to start exploring other games? I'm not trying to be mean or drive anyone away or anything like that. I just think it's a legitimate question. I get bored with a game quite often and that's why I run most of the 2D Mario games to keep myself interested in still doing this after 4.5 years. It's also nice to be a part of multiple communities.
What other 2D Mario game has anywhere close to that many categories except for SMW (which is a much more robust game for meme categories)?
I feel that we've done what we can to reasonably accommodate the needs and wants on the moderation side and the runner side of the leaderboard. Not everyone is going to be happy and not everyone is not going to agree all the time and that's just how it is.
You got 341 because you're running on the PAL version and not NTSC.
It's not minimum points because you'd wait for the timer to nearly expire if that was the case. It's possible to still grab the flag when the timer is showing 0.
From the previous comments, I don't know that there's a lot I can add to this discussion. I will be upfront about how I perceive this though.
To me, it seems like you're using the no cheating, glitches, etc. as an excuse to not push yourself to learn the strats needed to be competitive at a higher level. If you wanna run and submit glitchless runs, that's perfectly fine, but if you want to be a top tier runner, you need to learn the strats. You may not like them, you may think it's stupid, but that's how it works. I sense a high level of unwarranted entitlement to ask the community to cater to ONE person. I don't see other people asking for what you're asking for.
Take a sport. Any sport. Do you see a single player pleading to the league to change the rules of the game so that it suits his interests? I can't (or don't like to) hit a home run in baseball, so let's change the rules to ban home runs. That's cheating. It's OP. Like come on, lol.
What are we gonna do? Verify the runs and go about our business. Maybe that's a blunt statement but that's pretty much what it is. Don't worry about the volume of runs we're getting, we're handling it. If changes need to be made we will debate and address them as needed. No changes are needed at this time.
I think you've misinterpreted the "times under 5:00 are treated with suspicion" a bit. To be a little more clear, times under 5:00 are treated with increased suspicion. It's not like someone who just out of the blue posts a time of 5:05 and we're like "that's not suspicious at all, we'll just accept it and move on" That's not how it is.
Know that we take a lot of things into consideration when verifying runs
The problem with PAL is that it's slower.
If he's playing on console it's not as simple as "buy an NTSC" cart. He would also need an NTSC console.
If he's playing on emulator, then yeah, just get the NTSC rom.

We removed the IL leaderboards a while ago. There aren't any plans to bring them back.
This is the category request thread. This isn't the "please verify my run thread."
Your runs have only been out there a day. We will get to it.
I tried blindfolded once. I managed to finally get out of 1-1 I think before I gave up. I think I have a vod of that somewhere.
Beat 1-4 isn't a very meaningful category. There's nothing really special, unique or interesting about such a category.
