I’m in the same boat as something must be done differently but the video doesn’t show anything but the end of the level.
I would test it but I’m not feeling it haha.
Can you explain a little further what you mean?
For players using emulator, recording shouldn't be a major issue. You can local record with OBS or some other recording software and upload it to YouTube.
For console players, if you don't have a capture card, you can record using a webcam or phone as an alternative. Just be advised the quality needs to be pretty good especially if you have high level runs. Upload that to YouTube.
Here's some information about the PAL version vs. NTSC.
- Runs at 50 FPS instead of 60 FPS (meaning PAL is slower)
- Mario's physics are a bit different
- Music tempo is different
- Playing on the PAL version is permitted and we do have some players that do play on that version. Just be aware that it is slower, so you're not going to get the kind of times that the NTSC players can. If you submit runs, make sure you mark them for EU / PAL when you pick the region.
The time saved is greater than the time to set it up. Otherwise, people wouldn't do it unless they're just trying to show off.
Discussions get slowed down a lot when we all try to weigh in because we're spread across three different continents.
However, if you want an update, here's what we've seemingly agreed on:
- Drop Nestopia input/movie file requirement
- Allow OpenEmu, no input/movie file requirement.
I cleared the queue of about 50 runs yesterday. These modifications were taken into consideration and accepted if there wasn't anything wrong.
I also apologize for not being more active during all of this and that I didn't respond to everyone's DMs on Discord. I'm running a side business along with my regular 8-5 job, so things are extremely busy for me right now.
I’m not sure how being able to execute the FPG on that definitively means the ROM is unmodified.
We’ve found the unofficial multicarts commonly do not have the original ROM.
If I can tolerate playing any% long enough to get a sub 5 I’d be fine with that. I don’t find any% enjoyable at all. I might play it once for a little bit every couple of months. Warpless on the other hand, I’d like to get sub 19:20 maybe sub 19:10 someday.
Aside from the fact that most console players really don't like moving back to emulator, we wouldn't allow such a category on the leaderboards because it can't be done on original console. Okay, well you can if you break your d-pad on your controller, but I don't think many people would be up for that. Also, realistically this makes it an emulator only category, which we really don't do either. If people want to do L+R runs on their own, nothing stops you from doing that, but I highly doubt we'd ever make such a category on the leaderboards to accommodate that.
My vote is "no, please use an unmodified ROM even if it's only the colors."
Someone is welcome to run an IL leaderboard somewhere else if they wish. Unless the feelings of the rest of the mods have changed, I find it extremely unlikely we would bring individual levels back or implement individual worlds. Many of the levels are not that difficult to get a perfect time in. I guess I don't see what the benefit having 300 people tied for 1st place on a 4-1 IL is going to be besides having your name on the leaderboard and say you're tied with first place with something.
Maybe I'm being blunt, but I don't see the value in reopening the IL floodgates. Believe me, if we did that it would just be a huge flood of IL submissions. Many other communities did away with ILs and we eventually did as well.
Using IGT isn’t very accurate and was a bad idea from the start for a game that uses frame/millisecond precision. I highly doubt we’d bring that back past the existing 1-1 fire and 8-4 levels.
How do we prove that it's a co-op run? Will it run smoothly and properly over the internet? Desync issues?
Please don't post information or links about how and where to acquire ROMs on the forums or the Discord. People can either figure it out themselves or speak to others privately.
I personally don't like the idea of moving it over as all of the current categories are always inclusive of all 4 (or all 5) games.
If we were to split off the versions of the games from NES, I'd honestly go the route of making an entirely separate leaderboard for each All-Stars game over migrating them to the All-Stars leaderboard.
I think you'd lose more time grabbing the powerups. All other factors aside, it's slower to use powerups if you're only encountering one Bowser. You'd need to encounter another one or two to save time.
That's a good sign you have a ROM that isn't legit if that's not showing. You need the .fds ROM not a .nes one by the way.
