Unpopular opinion alert
With respect and love for the mods that actually verify - there have been people that have requested to be mods that are very capable of verifying, and they don't get accepted. Two of them actually WERE mods (for about a day), and then were unmodded for god knows what reason. Instead, they modded three people. one of which doesn't verify at all (to my knowledge) (shout out to the other two, who are great) and even THAT took them the better part of a year to add those three. They also kept a few that never verify runs and are not active on the boards... instead of modding those that can verify runs. I don't have sympathy for mods' busy schedules when it's a position that many other people would be glad to help with. If it's a queue that has enough runs that it's difficult to verify them all in a timely manner, then add more trustworthy mods... until the workload is NOT overwhelming, or until there are NOT fully capable trustworthy mod applicants available that are specifically requesting to be mods. It really is that simple.
17 days is not timely, the 1 month threshold is the threshold that it is SO bad and delinquent that the super-mods of the entire site would step in... That doesn't need to be the bar on smb1 of what constitutes "timely".
There is no reason for a run to go 17 days. Unless there's some sort of complication about that specific run that we don't know about - and in that instance, it would seem like a courtesy to message a user that has been as involved and active as youtubeman a courtesy message saying that there's an issue... a one sentence message - if it's going to be taking so long.
If the queue were long and the mods had nobody that wanted to help and/or was capable of helping (whether through skill or trustworthiness) that would TOTALLY make sense, and I would feel for the mods. However, that's just not the case. There are several people that would love to help verify runs that are extremely capable - they just aren't allowed to for some reason.
<3 to the mods that verify runs... less <3 to the ones that don't verify or have been jamming up the process of adding more mods - because they care more about limiting access to the elite mod club than in actually verifying runs.
Before you have a knee-jerk reaction to the above... ask yourself this, is anything I said wrong?
Interesting. Without meaning to sound rude, but what's the point? Is there something that the gog dos box setup doesn't do well?
Yeah I think it lends itself more to individual level runs than the whole game. Or at least individual episode
You must not be doing the route correctly, or are using the wrong rom. If you don't get powerups and take the coin shortcut, a time of 360 means you wasted roughly 3 seconds somewhere, which in 1-1 is really bad, even for a new player.
A time of 369 is very achievable even for a new player with a little practice. Watch videos of any run on the leaderboards under 5 minutes, and copy what they do (except the fastest 4 runners who do a glitch at the end... Just jump to the top of the flagpole instead of the bottom like they do for a complicated glitch)
Maybe you're doing the coin section wrong? You have to let off right at the beginning or you'll bump the wall and lose time
Lol he's back! I kinda missed SMG64 - was a fun dramatic time in the forums. It's like a cheesy soap opera playing out in front of you... but for nerds... and about mario.
TheSpenzers created his account 4 months ago... exactly when SMG64 deleted his - and makes a forum post about SMG64 (which by the way is impossible to know about, since he deleted his account, so the locked threads don't even show the info)
He also knows about the obscure YouTube account, which would be literally impossible to know about unless you had intimate knowledge of it. His style of writing is about the same.
Check his history of forum posts... the first post was asking what "sub-5" meant (which is intuitive, even aside from mario) then a few posts later he's talking about converting TAS runs to RTA, and clearly shows deep knowledge of the game's mechanics. Something SMG did as well - feign ignorance (just like he's doing here by the way) - He also knew about SMB64's alternate account TheRandomSpeedrunner.
I did it! I cracked the case! Just call me Sherlock Holmes.
They did away with Individual Level leaderboards a while back - there are a couple exceptions. There is still an Individual level category for the last level (8-4) https://www.speedrun.com/smbce#8-4_IL --- and there is beat 1-1 as fire mario https://www.speedrun.com/smbce#1-1_as_Fire_Mario
All of the categories other than the big two (warpless and any%) can be found in the super mario bros category extensions page listed below. Welcome to the super mario bros. community!
Most of you already know this, but I thought it was worth a forum notice/reminder about the SGDQ conference
Some of our own are running THIS THURSDAY at 8:34 PM CST Super Mario Bros. 1 warpless - you can watch it on Twitch
I believe they're going to do small fire mario as well...

CLEAR YOUR CALENDARS :) It's going to be a good one... especially since there wasn't smb at the last GDQ (womp womp)
SMB HYPE!!!!
Wait - does that mean when I load up the PAL rom in powerpak on my NES (Frontloader) that it's not the same as true "PAL"?
If so - mind blown
"speedrunners who use an emulator (ex. Darbian,Kosmic, somewes)"
None of those three use an emulator - they're all original console NES
Two frame wall jump forward ~~~ Fairly simply setup, hold right but NOT the run button (A) until you start falling, gives you a bigger window to make the wall jump
But like roopert said - unless you're going for a time close to 5:00 flat, your time is probably better spent optimizing other things - it's a fairly precise trick, and it will only save you a second or so if you get it, but it will lose you time if you miss it.
Nope - 8-3 - I guess I should have said bump INTO a block. In 8-1 you have to hit a block, but 8-3 you have to intentionally slow yourself down by a frame BEFORE the final stairs jump so that you don't get fireworks and you still are able to hit the top of the flagpole
"imagine if there was a level where you'd have to lose exactly one frame to get the optimal framerule"
That sounds to me like the exact situation in 8-3... Where you have to bump a block to get the optimal rule
"1 you lose nothing but not sure about 3 or 6"
My understanding was that 1 you lose 1 framerule... so a 341 is the same as a 340.
But since you only lose one framerule, it's not worth waiting for the 340 since it's the same as a 341... or do you literally lose ZERO time on a 341?
So, a 342 is TWO framerules ahead of a 341, is this correct?
The "fast" pipe in 8-2 is necessary to get the fast bbg shot. Even without bbg it usually saves a framerule over the "slow" one. Although it's technically possible to get the fast shot with a fast version of the "slow clear" it's better to do the fast clear. If you do the slow clear you're likely to get 6 fireworks.
If someone wants to record the tricks you mentioned with input display on fceux and link the video here on YouTube or twitch I'll change them to the gif... I don't know how to properly even do most of the tricks you mentioned
my old web site went RIP - along with all the gifs - fortunately I kept them locally on the computer, so I rehosted them on giphy.com --- and we're back up and running - updating the guide as well
Fixed the links to the old gif thread =) https://www.speedrun.com/smb1/thread/uz8f3
RIP my old gif thread ( https://www.speedrun.com/smb1/thread/uz8f3 ) --- I need to re-upload those gifs to a new site... but for now... three examples of 4-2 wrong warp in varying difficulties
"easy" 373
"medium" 374
"hard" 375
Video of the tied world record for PAL - you can see he makes a two framerule mistake on 4-2... and at LEAST a one second mistake on 8-4 between a long turnaround room and a big mistake on water... World record (without even BBG / blazit) is wide open by probably a full 2 seconds, but certainly an easy one second... O.O
Just a thought. (wink wink Kosmic, next time you get the itch to do a meme category)
It's not a very sexy category though because it doesn't get its own board - the only way to see it is to go to the main leaderboard and click on "FILTER" then "REGION" and select "EUR / PAL"
To add to what Roopert said @Nocapturecard "I don't think this affects the gameplay"
It does affect gameplay - some of the jumps are different because you jump different distances between NTSC and PAL - you also move significantly farther forward on the screen after backwards jumps (for example, you can easily do 4-2 wrong warp with only 2 backwards jumps instead of 3)
As another example of the difference, the stair jump with Lakatu at the beginning of 8-2 is literally impossible on PAL at full speed (as opposed to NTSC where it's fairly easy) - so you have to slow down a little to successfully get up the stairs
67 out of the 683 runs on this leaderboard are PAL. And for reference of speed, the NTSC version world record is from Kosmic and is 4:56 - the PAL world record is tied by Miqoou and JoshKeys at 5:11 --- so it's significantly slower.
In short - it's faster to play on NTSC if it's available, but the PAL works just fine, but is a little slower and a little different.
