(Disclaimer: Darpey is not a mod)
One of the things to verify framerate (which is one of the variables for determining an accepted emulator)
It might help if you recorded a video of gameplay on the emulator with smb1 rom and sit in 1-1 (the first world) and let the timer "TIME OUT"
Then it can be compared to TIME OUT on FCEUX for framerate to the millisecond.
But the short of it is... it's really really really hard. Despite knowing HOW to get it, I have literally never gotten it in real time. I've only ever gotten it very slowed down. It takes tens of hours of practice to get somewhat consistent at it... and HUNDREDS of hours to get good at it.
It's definitely a LAST trick to add to your arsenal for a run, unless you're just doing it for fun, in which case go for it =)
1-1 Flagpole Glitch (DISCLAIMER: This is not practical to add to a run until trying for roughly a low 4:57) See the below youtube video for full tutorial...
You must land on the 3rd block from the top on the first pixel while not holding "B" - on the first frame with mario in the "running" animation (as opposed to the jump/falling animation), you hold only right (not "A" or "B"), then for exactly the next 2 frames, hold "B", then do a full jump on the 3rd frame (as shown). Hold all inputs until the jump is completed. By the time you reach the flagpole block, you will need to release "A" and "B", and hold "left" for exactly 3 frames (as shown), then jump on the 4th frame. If you do the first "jump" half of the trick correctly, you will clip into the block assuming you do a full jump, even if you mess up the "second" part. If you do not clip into the block, it means you messed up the jump.
Frame counter will obviously be different depending on your pace - as long as you hit the first pixel on the block, it doesn't matter if you do a full or partial jump. In order to "save" the framerule, you will need to be 4 frames from perfect on the coin pipe section, which means that some "380"s will not be fast enough to save the rule. Credit to runner "Sockfolder" for finding out exact inputs for an RTA run.
25% with slowdowns
50% no slowdown

tap left... it's the only way i can do it consistently - and you don't lose a framerule, so it's 100% as fast as not tapping left
It's the sticky'd forum post "SMB Practice Rom"
This site with all maps on smb1 is a godsend for that question - http://ian-albert.com/games/super_mario_bros_maps/
It shows all hidden powerups for every level
@roopert83 - I've seen you do DDR streams... when's the SMB DDR stream?
edit: apparently he beat THAT time and got a 5:51 which is on the leaderboards still today

Coin amount does affect outcomes in some way, since it seems to affect whether or not you get the "lag frame" with bbg. That being said, every one of the eight stages had been extensively studied to find extra framerules, and nothing had been found other than 8-1 and 4-2... Both of which are extremely hard for humans to do
@xeroxfiend vs @GTAce99 TODAY at 7:30pm cst... Final four match in the winners bracket.
On your first attempt, you did one backwards bump and two forwards bumps... but then you undid ALL of the rightward push that your bumps accomplished when you overshot the pipe and went back, so it was as if you did zero bumps.
Even if you did all of that with a PERFECT pipe entry, you may or may not have gotten the wrong warp - to guarantee the wrong warp, you need three backwards bumps, because bumping backwards pushes you further to the right than forwards bumps.
The second attempt you did one backwards jump and only one forwards jump - which wouldn't have worked even with a perfect drop, but you overshot and turned left, which, again, erased all the movement accomplished by those two bumps.
Lots has happened since this was posted... Goofy broke the small fire world record three times ending with a 19:11.653, which is the current small fire world record.
Xeroxfiend broke his record several times, ending with a 19:14, tying the old world record from SuperSonic
then GTAce got on the spreadsheet and immediately broke his record with a 19:12.585, and then took the small fire world record from goofy with a 19:11.1
and Darpey still lagging behind, but has broken his record several times ending with a 19:17
I made a compilation video of the four fastest small fire times that currently appear on the leaderboard. Until 7-1 no single runner is more than 2 framerules from the next closest runner.
It is still possible to get a sub-19:10 with small fire strategies without any tough "glitches" (e.g. fpg, blazit, bbg) just good solid play - which as of this post would be 7th place on the warpless leaderboard
If you are interested in running small fire, and have a pb in the 19:30 or better range, I'd be happy to map you to the sheet - just PM me on discord or twitch, or respond - I will need a copy of your small fire pb run on 19:30 or better pace to properly map the rules. So far we have Goofychocobo, GTAce, Xerox, Darpey, and JTKnott on the sheet.
Small fire mario warpless is a super-fun category, I enjoy running it AND watching people run it, so come on in! Join the small jafar army
^ any time you let off right, or kill an enemy it will change the rng
Yes it will have the same rng provided that you're in the same rule with the same powerups and haven't been hit or died.
You're probably just not on the same rule. It can be difficult to figure out exactly what rule you should be on... Even using pellssons sheet that tells you in his site. If the rule isn't what you expected it to be, try going up or down a couple rules until you find the rng that you expect
I'm curious to know your finding roopert. what a simple and brilliant way to get a long stream of time to compare.
Iirc the best pal run is 5:11. It's not ad optimized ad the ntsc runs though and does no "tricks" based on that I'd say pal loses about 11-12 seconds

No idea why it manipulates the parakoopa to ALWAYS be the "middle" one you can bop on top of... but it does. Doesn't make any sense.
