PRELIMINARY THOUGHTS:

  • Inventory management is critical for this route. I've tried to optimize my route to favor the placement of key items in easy-to-reach locations. As such, I sometimes prefer to do things in a particular order to manipulate my inventory.
  • I aim to save my herbs for the Vampires and Killer 6 -- however, in a pinch, sometimes I will use herbs earlier than that if I need to. In these cases, choosing herbs from deeper in the inventory (inv15 or inv16, for example) will have the least impact on the placement of key items later. For instance, if I get in trouble during the Viper fight, I'll use the herb in [inv14] as a safety, as this doesn't affect inventory later.
  • I'll probably make a video guide for this in the future as well. However, before I do so, I'd want to make sure I'm including all the known speedrunner tricks as well, which would take a little research.

POTENTIAL ROUTE VARIATIONS There are several routing options based on the level of risk you want in your game. I've designed my route around what I believe to be a good balance between safety and optimization: 1) getting stat upgrades from Gem in Freejia to help with vampires; and 2) saving all excess herbs for the vampire fight and the Killer 6. Below are some potential variations that a player may choose, as well as how routing might be affected:

  • A route that has the potential to be faster (but much more dangerous) would involve skipping talking to Gem in Freejia. This makes the vampire fight more difficult. Also, you would have to be more diligent about clearing Red Jewels from your inventory in the earlier dungeons.
  • A variant that's slightly safer but slightly less optimal would be talking to Gem in Freejia before going to Diamond Mine. This would affect item placement later in the run, but shouldn't change the route much.

OVERWORLD MENUS Nearly every overworld menu has your relevant destination in the lower-left spot, which can be chosen by holding down and mashing A and B. Where there are exceptions, they'll be called out like this: (R in menu)

INTRO Letting the opening intro play until a specific time helps us manipulate the fisherman position in South Cape. After starting the game, let one entire intro cutscene complete. During the second intro scene, hit start at a particular time during the Ankor Wat section, illustrated at the beginning of this vod: Some common setups: The setup that's seemingly most consistent across hardware is a visual cue. Shortly after the text appears, you'll see two birds flying directly on top of each other. Hit Start when they're lined up center with the main dome of Ankor Wat.

SOUTH CAPE

  • Get the Red Jewel in the bell tower [+inv1]
  • Get the fisherman's Red Jewel* [+inv2], do seaside cave sequence
  • If he's not there on your way to the Seaside Cave, your intro manipulation didn't work.
  • Get the Red Jewel from Lance's house [+inv3]
  • Complete Will's house sequence and get Lola's Melody [+inv4]
  • Leave South Cape

EDWARD'S

  • Go upstairs and complete Kara sequence
  • Get the guard Red Jewel from behind the pillar [+inv5]
  • Have Edward send you to jail
  • Get prison key [+inv6] and escape into the Underground Tunnel

UNDERGROUND TUNNEL

  • When killing the Canal Worm to open the first door, clear a Red Jewel [-inv2]
  • In the next room, get the herb from the chest [+inv2]
  • After killing the Canal Worm to open the second door, clear a Red Jewel [-inv1]
  • In the next room, get the Red Jewel from the chest in the small room [+inv1]
  • After killing King Bat, select Lola's Melody in [inv4]
  • In the last room, get the Red Jewel from the chest on the left [+inv7]
  • In the exit room, get the Red Jewel from the barrel [+inv8]

EDWARD'S II / SOUTH CAPE II

  • Get Kara upstairs

  • Get the Yak from the basement [+inv9]

  • Leave the castle

  • Complete South Cape sequence as normal

  • Talk to the Moon Tribe on the plateau
  • Complete the slug challenge to get Inca Statue B [+inv12]
  • Talk to Lilly

INCA

  • Enter the dungeon, get and select the Diamond Block [+inv13]
  • Use the Diamond Block to open the way forward [-inv13]
  • Kill the 4-way on the right to open up the ladder, then jump down to the center platform and progress through the dungeon to the statue puzzle room. (There is NO NEED to kill the Whirligig on the pedestal.)
  • In the big room after the statue puzzle, perform dash attacks to kill the Four Way to open a staircase to the south; use this opportunity to clear a Red Jewel [-inv3]
  • Exit to the south to get the Wind Melody [+inv3], then death warp
  • Drop down two levels to the door on the right to get the herb chest behind the broken statues [+inv13]
  • When you get outside, perform the Z-ladder glitch: Let the mud monster rush you going up, and go left to dodge him. Wait in front of the ladder. When he begins to rush you again, mount the ladder. Just before he reaches you, dismount and hold up until he hits you twice and kicks you into the ladder climbing animation. Climb down to enter the door.
  • Exit that door and go to the left, progressing backwards through the dungeon to get the herb chest near the Stone Guard [+inv14]
  • Progress normally through the dungeon, re-entering the door to the right outside; go north after the double ramp to get the Red Jewel chest [+inv15] and use that Dark Space to change into Freedan
  • Stand on the gold tile (4th from the right, 2nd from the bottom) for 10 seconds to progress
  • Set Inca Statue A [-inv11] and Inca Statue B [-inv12]
  • Defeat Castoth

GOLD SHIP

  • Talk to the queen

  • Get the Mystic Statue from the chest in the hold

  • Talk to the guy on the crow's nest (extra credit for jumping down early)

  • Take a nap on the bunk bed and go through the dream sequence

  • Get the Red Jewel from Seth on the deck [+inv11]

  • Talk to the queen again, progress through the sequence

  • Get the two trashcan items: an HP upgrade and an herb [+inv13]
  • Rescue Erik and go to the Diamond Mine

DIAMOND MINE

  • Get the herb chest in the second room [+inv16]
  • Rescue the laborer in the third room; he'll send three Red Jewels to Gem for you
  • In the long room on your way to the Friar Dark Space, clear two Red Jewels [-inv1,-inv2]
  • Get Dark Friar
  • Backtrack to kill the Grundit on the ledge, cross the ramps, get and select the Elevator Key [+inv1]
  • Death warp to the beginning of the dungeon
  • Use the Elevator Key [-inv1]
  • Get the two mine keys [+inv1,+inv2]
  • Use the mine keys [-inv1,-inv2]
  • Get Memory Melody from Sam [+inv1], lose the Prison Key [-inv6] and Wind Melody [-inv3]
  • Death warp in the room on the left and return to Freejia

FREEJIA II

  • Talk to Gem on the roof of the center house; give him all your Red Jewels and gain an herb [+inv2] as well as a couple stat upgrades

  • Get the Red Jewel from the upstairs room on the right [+inv3]

  • Use the Memory Melody next to the NPCs [-inv1] and talk to Erik

  • Get RJ in first chest [+inv1]

  • On dark side, go right at the fork to get the herb chest [+inv5]

  • Get Crystal ball chest [+inv6], death warp

  • Place Crystal Ball [-inv6] Room 2 (SE):

  • When you use Dark Friar, take the opportunity to clear a Red Jewel [-inv1]

  • Get Crystal Ball chest [+inv1], death warp

  • Place Crystal Ball [-inv1] Room 3 (SW):

  • Charge Psycho Dash to kill the Blue Cyber, take damage down to 3 HP

  • Use ramp glitches to get the Crystal Ball chest [+inv1]

  • Backtrack through the room to get the dark side Red Jewel chest [+inv6], death warp off fire snake

  • Place the Crystal Ball [-inv1] Room 4 (NW):

  • Change to Freedan on the dark side

  • Use Friar to activate statue to progress

  • Get bottom chest first: Crystal Ball [+inv1]

  • Loop around to get top chest: herb [+inv7], death warp

  • Place Crystal Ball [-inv1] and defeat Viper

  • Skip the second necklace since it doesn't affect inventory

  • Third room, go down to get the herb chest [+inv9] before going down ramp

  • Use Slider after the second ramp to backtrack through the room and change to Freedan

  • Skip over the next room, kill the Archer with Friar, backtrack to get Spin Dash

  • Progress normally, use Spin Dash to skip over the last room to fight Sand Fanger

  • Lose the necklace after the cutscene [-inv7]

  • Go up the right side to get the STR upgrade from the man in the hidden house

  • Get the Red Jewel from the shrine [+inv6]

  • Go back to the mansion, talk to Ann to give her the Apple [-inv11] and gain a Red Jewel [+inv7]

  • Use the Teapot near Neil [-inv1], then talk to Neil

  • Back in the guest room, talk to Kara

  • After entering the ruins, get the Red Jewel chest [+inv1]

  • Progress normally through the dungeon, making sure to get the herb chest in the long vertical room [+inv8] before using Spin Dash to fly over it

  • Change to Freedan in the garden

  • After the garden, go right; I suggest charging Friar to kill the Frenzy you pass so it doesn't give you trouble on the way back

  • In the next room, use upgraded Friar to kill the Frenzy on the right to open the way; take the opportunity to clear a Red Jewel [-inv1]

  • Get Earthquaker

  • Backtrack and go to the left, using Earthquaker to stun and pass the Gorgon

  • Make a U-turn and go outside to set the checkpoint; backtrack to get the Red Jewel chest [+inv1] and death warp

  • In the next room, run past the staircase to get the Black Glasses under the Shubber outside [+inv11]; equip them if you'd like to be able to see in the white room

  • Backtrack to go up the stairs into the white room, take the right path to go up another level

  • Progress through the rooms; be sure to get the Red Jewel chest on the left [+inv12] before jumping down

  • Get the Gorgon Flower [+inv13], backtrack to exit the ruins

  • In the white room, take the left path and jump down to get the Red Jewel chest on the ledge [+inv14]

  • In the last room, kill the wall bug on the right to open the way out; take the opportunity to select the Gorgon Flower [inv13]

  • Progress normally, use ALL HERBS* before getting the Hieroglyph [+inv2], take the portal *If you wish to keep the herb in [inv16] you may do so, though you must use it OR clear a Red Jewel before you get your last Hieroglyph (I suggest the one in [inv15] after you complete Room 2) Room 5:

  • After melting, go left to get the Hieroglyph [+inv7], death warp Room 6:

  • Get Hieroglyph [+inv8], death warp Room 4:

  • Get Red Jewel in chest guarded by Haunts [+inv9]

  • Get Hieroglyph [+inv12], death warp Room 3:

  • Use Spin Dash to get Red Jewel chest [+inv13], death warp Room 2:

  • Jump down platform twice to open way forward; do this in both rooms

  • Get Hieroglyph [+inv14], then jump down to get Red Jewel chest [+inv15], death warp Room 1:

  • Get Hieroglyph [+inv16], use portal Hieroglyph Room:

  • Select Lola's Melody before entering [inv4]

  • After playing the melody, immediately move right and select Hieroglyph 6 [inv8]

  • Place Hieroglyphs in proper order - here's where they should be:

  • At the top of Babel, use the spirit to return to Dao

DAO II

  • Get Red Jewel in the grass to the right [+inv8]
  • Do snake game to have two Red Jewels sent to Gem for you
  • Talk to the oboe player at the entrance to gain Lola's Letter and Father's Journal [+inv12,+inv14]
  • Talk to Gem, give him all Red Jewels to go to Mansion

MANSION

  • At the first staircase, go right to get the herb chest [+inv2], use this herb whenever you want
  • Fight Solid Arm to return to Babel

BABEL II

  • Talk to Olman and warp to the comet
  • Equip the Aura [inv1] and defeat Dark Gaia to beat the game
