Backspin: -Mechanics This essentially makes it so your cue ball will spin backwards after one of two occurrences: a short time rolling forward (less drastic backwards movement) or colliding with another ball on the table (high backwards momentum). Angles and distance from collision (with ball) control the direction and speed of the backwards movement.
-Technique Simply hit the ball on its lower half, further towards the bottom, the more intense the backspin, the higher the speed, and vice versa.
-Scenarios
- Your cue ball is in a direct line with another ball and the pocket. You are very close to this ball, but you don't want to go into the pocket for obvious reasons. Hit towards the very bottom of the cue, you will go forward enough to hit the ball into the pocket, but you will spin backwards as soon as you hit. If you wish to stay close to said pocket, hit at the 25% mark (as if bottom is 0%, and top is 100%.)
- Your cue ball is in a direct line with another ball and the pocket. You are very far away from this ball, and you want to get it into the pocket but are worried that you may go in with it. Hit the cue towards the middle, but still on the bottom half. Towards the 40% range.
Topspin: Exact opposite of backspin, its use is to break up awkward groupings or to get a better angle off of a ball
Right/leftspin: Don't do it, your cue ball will sit there spinning forever after all other balls have stopped moving, therefore wasting time.
