At some point you need at least one sheep and one cow to procede within the story. I did some research on this topic and here i share some facts, an exploit and some possible routing strategies with you.

I'll start with the facts:

  • First of all, the growth times: A Cow needs 15 days to get bigger. So if you buy it on the 1st of summer, it will be able to give milk on the 16th of summer. The sheep will grow big after 12 days.

  • You can milk cows every day, the sheeps whool will regrow every third day. To be able to get it, you have to feed them beforehand. They will eat the food you put in there (or you've put in there the day before) and will be ready at the next full hour (keep sure, that they reached their food, before you leave the barn, as they might need to eat another full hour in some cases, when they're still on their way to the food)

  • Both, milk and whool, do have a chance to be great (or better). They'll produce these even with zero notes, but the chances will be significantly higher with at least two notes. To get a great whool is mandatory, as you can't finish the game without it. For milk you could either use two milk to produce the delicious animal food or you can also use only one great milk, if you're lucky with your first milk

  • Notes can be raised pretty fast by feeding, petting or cleaning the animal. Cleaning is handled the same way as petting, so petting them afterwards won't have any effect. Notes will fall, if you don't feed and clean animals and if there's tons of compost around them.

Quality Exploit: The quality of the animal products will be determined, when you enter the barn, while the animeals can be milked/shaved. So it's possible to save your game right before you enter the barn and to reload it, if you didn't get the great whool from the sheep. I would definitely recommend this for whool, as it saves tons of time, but not for milk, especially if you do them at the same time.

Routing tips:

  • Buying an animal will telport you back to your farm. So after you've bought them, also feed them directly.

  • The cow should always be bought first. The sheep should then be bought a maximum of three days afterwards, so that you can get your first whool and (hopefully great) milk at the same time.

  • You can feed the animals every two days by just putting four animal food in it, so you'll save some time every second day.

Routing

  • No matter which route you take, keep sure that you've something to do in the mountains, when you buy the animals, so that you don't waste to much time running up there. Also plan to do something on the 16th and 17th day of your cows life span, so that you don't need to waste time in front of the barn waiting for them to eat.
  • The routings are planned in a way, that you get at least 2 notes for the sheep

Route 1:

  • Buy both animals, feed them and then ignore them until the 11th day (sleeping 10 times). That will stress them out, but it's still unlikely, that they'll get sick
  • feed and clean/pet the animals on the 11th, 13th and 15th day and get rid of the compost. Ignore the sheeps whool at these days.
  • now save in front of the barn (before you went in the first time!) go in and get the whool. If it's great whool, then also get the milk, otherwise reload the game and repeat it until it's great.
  • if the first milk wasn't great, then feed the animals on the 16th day and get your second milk on the 17th day

Route 2:

  • It's actually the same as route 1, but you just ignore the animals an extra day, so that you feed them on the 12th, 14th and 16th day.

Route 3:

  • Buy the cow first
  • then buy the sheep 3 days later. This should ideally be a wednesday or a saturday, so that you can mine first, sell your gemstones afterwars and then buy the sheep, so you save an additional climb up there
  • From there on take the same route as Route 1 or 2 in terms of feeding

-> I would recommend Route 3, especially if you still need to farm money at this point in the run. -> Route 1 and 2 aren't that much different in terms of time, but i would take the first one, if you've something to do in the town on the 16th day and the second route -> If you doesn't have something to do on the 16th, then definitely take Route 2. -> Feeding the animals 6 times and cleaning/petting the sheep 3 times is the lowest possible amount to ensure, that the sheep will get to at least two notes and to ensure, that the animals stress level is right before the maximum. You can try to challange your RNG-Luck by skipping the first time of feeding. That saves you another day, but will drastically raise the chance of sickness and you'll have a harder time to get the great whool as well. I would only recommend this, if the WR gets to a point, where this timesafe gets important -> if an animal gets sick, then it's up to you, if you buy animal medicine or if you restart your run. You could also just buy animal medicine when you get one of your animals, if you can afford it

Let me know, if something is too vague or if i missed some facts or another viable route.
