Discussion For File setups

So recently there was a development in strategy for any% (Mostly it can be used for other categories) which involves setting up a file to abuse the fact when you unlock a scroll it drops instantly, So in theory if you were to setup a file with certain scrolls close or 1 kill away from unlocking you could always guarantee a drop of very powerful scrolls. The first example of this being used is by KomatozZ in his Elite/Nightmare runs, utilizing a file that unlocks the following:

  • Elemental cube
  • Advanced Depot
  • Flesh and Bones
  • Paranormality
  • Deadly counter
  • Penetration bullet
  • Deadly curse
  • Merciless strike
  • Gold Medal
  • Ostrich Rider

The way in which the file was setup wasn't using any exploits or use of Alt+F4 which makes it "Legit" and it's possible for any player to setup albeit very time consuming (Hence me releasing a file already setup to level the playing field for any runner). A thing to consider is that this only currently effects Elite/Nightmare as they are the most impactful, being able to get Advanced Depot mainly, but this could just as easily spread to Normal or Foundry only with different strategies/setups.

The main purpose of this post is to gather feedback on how you think we as a community should deal with the strategy since as of now it's allowed in any% since it doesn't technically break any of the current rules. Any suggestions for what you personally would like or what you think should happen are all valid as we don't want to disregard a community vote on here or in discord.

My take on it would be that it's fine to have a speedrun file for any category where its viable but there should be a part of the page that indicates for each time whether or not a speedrun file was used. Would be good to hear other opinions on that but it could be a good way to separate times without creating completely new categories in my opinion

As one of the people trying to improve this new file strategy, I believe that this optimized file should be allowed. If you take a look at the vast majority of speedrunning communities then there is constant development of new and faster ways of running the game. This is an extreme improvement on the previous route. Because of this drastic drop in times, it has sparked debate as to whether or not it should be allowed simply because no other strategy can currently rival its speed. I do not think it is healthy for the development of this speedrunning community to restrict/dissuade runners from pushing the bounds of what is possible in this game or any other. Ergo, as per the preestablished rules, this new file should stay in the any% category because that is where it belongs. Moving forward though, I do believe that there should be a revision to the categories by adding glitch/glitchless to permit the creation of files using the alt f4 exploit/glitch, because that is most likely the next step in optimizing the current new route.

I agree that this new strategy should stay in any% for the same reasons noted before; universally, any% has always been taken literally. I disagree that this debate is due to a "drastic drop in times." We are crossing a line between what is called "intended play" and "major abuse" several solutions are available.

First, we have what Chappll suggested, just simply add a column labeled something like "NMA" (No Major Abuses) and have a y/n on each run. Second, (I'm not sure if this is even possible because we already have "sub-category" tabs for each character) create a tab for NMA ABOVE what is currently "Normal Elite Nightmare." The second scenario is more preferable because it gives people a better reason (their own board) to run NMA. If this isn't possible, we could create a separate main category next to "Any%" called "Any% NMA"

The line should be drawn between NMA and Any% whenever something is unlocked mid run, gun or scroll. It is arguable that this is unfriendly to new runners because, if they don't have every unlocks, it's very easy for their run to get unintentionally sent to the Any% category. However, it should be just as easy to create a replicable and distributable 100% unlocked file as it is an Any% file with scrolls and weapons ready to be unlocked.

Concerning how this extends to other main categories, there's no reason this shouldn't be the same case for "Foundry Only" unless you really want to argue that things like mid-air strike and brutal gloves aren't absolutely a game-changer to obtain every run. Similar to above, we could simply create a new main category called "Foundry Only, NMA" or something similar. However, these arguments can't really extend to multiplayer categories as far as I am aware. The only way you could even verify that any scrolls haven't been unlocked would be to have (up to) 4 recordings, which is absurd. Fresh file, I don't believe I have to address at all.

To close:

  • Any run with an unlock in it should remain under the any% category
  • Runs with no unlocks, Any% and Foundry Only, should get some form of separation and placed their own respective NMA (No Major Abuses) Category
  • This should extend to Foundry only, but can't (afaik) be extended to multiplayer runs.

I'm fine with it being in any%. I think the glitch-less category is a good idea, thought has flaws. You can purposefully not have certain scrolls & weapons unlocked to increase the chance to get usuell ones. Thought it is a valid strategy, and in any% everything which isn't cheating should be allowed. So if you want to go as fast as possible, that's the place.

I personally would like to have a 100% run, where you run with 100% unlocks. Because the chances to get screwed over by the RNGesus is equal.

Having a preset file for speedruning is plainly not that good because then u can setup to have tremendous advantage then you would normally have. it should either be new file or 100% file not something like "Speedrun File" Thats just cheating when it comes to speedruning because you are pretty much choosing what kind of item that will drop since you only need to kinda kill 1 of that certain enemy to get that specific scroll. No not in any speedrun have i ever heard of Rogue-Like speedrun being like that. its the RNG that makes the run. Not you choosing the items before-hand.

Make 2 seperate categorys because having a Speedrun file and then a 100% file in the same category is just unfair for the 100% legit runners.
