Stat progress doesn't get reset in any of the versions

Previously someone has claimed, that the Xbox version of San Andreas does not have to be restarted, when the runner decides to reset, because unlike the PC version, it resets the progress levels between upgrades. I started investigating all versions I own of the game (Xbox original, Xbox 360 remastered, PS2) to find out if this occurs, using a certain method. None of these versions reset your progress. Since 100% and All Missions categories require certain skills to progress in the run, I believe this should be discussed. Also I kept saying golf course instead of tennis club, sorry about that.

Is your title a hypothesis that turned out to be false after testing, or is it the conclusion you've drawn after testing? I cant be arsed to watch a 7 minute video to find out.

I dont see anything to discuss. Restart your fucking game if you do a category that relies on muscle/fat/cycling/whatever stats and soft resetting doesn't properly fix it. (Ideally the same for any%, but I don't really care because it's any%.) We already do it for lung capacity, why are the other stats not taken seriously?

Conclusion. This wouldn't be the title, if it wasn't true.

Edit: I edited the opening post to have that information in the comment as well, not only the video / title, to make it obvious.

I'm pretty sure most of this is going on about my run. If I were to show you video evidence my stat's were exactly the same off a reboot would that help the situation? I looked at my vod and at the very beginning you can see my stats. I rebooted the game right now and they're exactly the same.

This isn't about stats not getting reset, they do. This is about the "exp" not getting reset.

All stats in this game require a certain amount of "exp" before the game gives you an upgrade, for example a certain amount of time spent underwater for lung capacity or a certain distance ridden with a bicycle for cycling skill. That "exp" amount is not reset if you start a new game without restarting the game first.

If you look at overcooler's video he cycles until he gets a cycling skill upgrade, then cycles some more after that and when he starts a new game he gets the first cycling skill upgrade much earlier than he's supposed to. That applies for all stats: stamina, max health, muscle, lung capacity, vehicle skills etc. Same applies to unlocked girlfriend special abilities, they don't get reset on new game.

It is because of this that 100% and now All missions need a fresh start because fat and muscle levels make a difference in dating girlfriends (plus vehicle skills in 100%). I wouldn't be opposed to doing it for any% as well but as of now it's not enforced and you're only required to restart the game for diving time.

Just to clarify, weapon skills don't seem to matter in that regard, right? Their progress is shown in the Stats menu in points from 0-1000 and that number gets reset when you start a new game. Since those points are increased with basicially every shot (that actually damages something), there can't be much invisible progress that is being carried over, if there even is something like that for weapons.

It doesnt matter Crook, you didnt know. It's just something that was brought to attention. Wonder when someone will verify (or reject) those runs though :D

I searched for some memory addresses of the skill progress. It seems like the progress of some skills does get reset when you start a new game or load a save. I found values that increase when you drive a car, drive a bike, run, sprint, fly a plane, cycle and dive. From those only cycling and diving progress didn't reset to 0 when I started a new game.

Germany

Ok, some more details. I found the following progress or EXP points memory values:

  • Lung Capacity¤
  • Muscle
  • Max Health¤
  • Stamina (4 different values)
  • Driving
  • Bike
  • Cycling¤
  • Flying

All of these reset to zero when starting a new game or loading a save, except for Lung Capacity, Max Health and Cycling.

So stuff like Muscle might not actually be an issue when starting a new game, but it still makes sense to restart the game, because even an earlier Max Health upgrade or other stuff that might not be reset properly could affect the run.

I made an explanation video for this with overlayed memory values for demonstration (sorry if I ramble on a bit sometimes):

I'll also make a wiki page to document the memory addresses I found and stuff.

Can I have your cheat table please? It sounds interesting to see how the "exp" is increased.

Germany

There you go: http://pastebin.com/FN8AR4wg

It also contains the script that I used to write the text files to use in OBS. If you're going to run it (under Table - Show Cheat Table Lua Script) then you're going to have to change the path it writes to first (search for v.txt). It runs until you close the dialog it opens.

I mostly made the script for overlaying it on videos, so there is no extra window with the proper formatting and stuff (which I think you could also make with Cheat Engine), that's only in the text files it writes.

So muscle and fat IS properly reset?

Thats nice, but cycling skill is still important to 100%. IDK about max health.

In this case, I'd say it's fair to have the same ruling any% uses to also be used on AM.

Germany

That's what it seems like at least. There may be other values in different memory regions than the ones I found, but that's more speculation at this point and generally being careful.

In any case, you could still come into a situation in any category where having a slighter higher Max Health earlier than usual could save the run (think surviving with just a bit of health). I guess it's not something that would affect every run, so not really comparable to consistently saving time to e.g. having to swim less, but it is something to consider.

The question is how strict/careful we want to be with this. I would say it is reasonable to allow a bit of leeway, so you don't have to restart your game everytime when you crash the bicycle in the first few seconds. The less exp progress you have before starting the run, the lower would probably be the chance of it affecting the run (getting Max Health upgrade 30s earlier means you'd have to get into a situation where it matters within those 30s). Not sure what the exact rule would be though.

How is cycling skill needed for 100%? Do you have to grind to max it or is it just because you use the bicycle more?

Portugal

Cycling skill is needed for Chilliad Challenge. If I recall correctly, S' PB did LS Courier so fast that he didn't have enough cycling skill for Chilliad Challenge and had to cycle for a few seconds

Not sure if that was my current PB Powdinet or one of them, but yes that is correct

Since you know how to see how stats varies during time, I always wanted to know, is it true you lose respect over time for being in a grove territory without wearing any green clothes? Do green clothes even make something or the only have decent respect stats (most of green clothing give good respect bonus), because if not they just make things worse, because it makes other gangs attack you more often ( and it makes you more likely to get wanted level, but that just something I heard, not sure if it is true).

Germany

You can test, too. You can press S in the stats menu and then open stats.html to get your Repect rounded to two digits. Alternatively, this should give you four or more digits, a save editor: http://www.paulinternet.nl/?page=sa Just stand around in Groove Street while doing something else in real life. ^^

Clothes affect total respect, but their influence is static, doesn't depend on time, area or something like that. Green clothers do not, however, affect wanted level and gang wars. You can also find respect values for clothes in save editor from Patrick's post.

Some missions lower the friction of train tracks for non-trains for their entire duration.

If you load a save or start a new game, then the friction stays. So, if you want to restart your run in those missions you have to reset this effect yourself by failing them (getting wasted for example) or quitting the game and restarting it.

Discussion on uses should happen in a different thread: http://www.speedrun.com/gtasa/thread/vsunt/

  • Wrong Side of The Tracks (until killing every Vago) (30% friction)
  • Snail Trail (40%)
  • End Of The Line 3 (30%)

Changes to the GTA:SA leaderboard

The GTA:SA community has been deteriorating over a long period of time. Many top runners are not currently present on the leaderboard. This issue has not been seriously addressed yet, but an attempt will be made to remedy it now.
