GTA:SA OSX Mac Version

Just bought the trilogy on steam so I could start practising runs and was wondering if anyone knows much about the OSX version of the game? In the menu the game says that is it v1.01 which since this version is on steam I assume it runs identically to the PC copy?

Additionally is there a thread on either here or SDA which has keyboard layout suggestions? I feel as though somethings might or should be laid out differently for speedrun.

Afaik, no detailed guides or posts were published on this. NEither keybindings nor version differences. I have read the whole SDA thread and everything here in /gtasa/forum and there's no guide that looks like it should obviously include it.

If you have many mouse buttons, use those as alternative for many of these bindings.^^ My mouse only has two buttons.

First, some controversial stuff. If you are undecided on the sprint button: it has relevance for sliding(with the fast method where you press all the buttons rapidly after each other): C,W,shift, aim is easier than C,W,Space, aim. C,W,Shift is pressing keys right-to-left, C,W,Space is a bit harder to time right. Try it right now. ^^

Mouse-Wheel for slight steering: driving in the middle of the road helps lessen the problem of cars spawning right in front of you, and that is easier to do by doing the minor adjustments with the mouse wheel since each 'mouse wheel step' [right word?] acts like a very short tap on the keyboard.

The camera is horrible when turning, which can make flying a pain sometimes(wsad/arrow keys -> no mouse). However, you can fly with the left hand on the keyboard and the right hand on the mouse: use 'extra mouse buttons' (buttons in addition to Left/Right) for flying up and down. Requires getting used to. Alternative: using mouse steering, there's a 'mouse look' button (forgot which one) to use for looking arround.

less controversial stuff: leaning up/down: down for driving faster, up for faster turning (useful at low speeds for parking into the right direction and a bit for its intended use (e.g.20s into the run) up: CapsLock down: Left Mouse

Alt/shift or mouse13/14 (your mouses may vary ;)) instead of Num8/Num2 for the military plane (fly/hover) and the fork lift(up/down) - again, because of the camera

horn and levelling heli - ^ maybe? you can also just use Num5 or something and give up the mouse for these - you need the horn for Wear Flowers in your Hair while parking and turning at the same time

TAB for sub-missions and putting the wheels out inside planes

Also, you want to bind the Secondary Fire in a car to a mouse button or a button you can reach with your left hand while driving. This is for the mission T-Bone Mendez in order to grab the package off the back of the bikes. You can also use this button to do Drive-By's with your Uzi, but it does the secondary fire mode for the Hunter/Hydra.

Whenever I reinstall the game, I make three quick rebinds:

  1. I switch Shift and Space around (No selfrespecting game uses space for something other than jump. Just look at any Shooter game out there)
  2. I bind the flight keys and turret steer keys to something I can reach with my left hand, as well as thumb buttons on my mouse. This gets rid of any need for me to move my hands AT ANY TIME except for when I want to eat something.
  3. Bind secondary fire to RMB. Default is left control which is harder to reach with the pinky. Handbrake works fine on spacebar since you have your left thumb available.

Basically, bind as many keys to your Left Thumb as possible as it is a very versatile finger that can reach a lot of buttons. The mouse is hardly used while driving, so bind every button you can. However, the usual limited number of buttons available prevents you from binding everything to the mouse. Your left pinky is also unused, but it has limited buttons available as well (shift and capslock, the rest is already awkward) unless you use ESDF, which I heard is superior anyway so if you get used to that it might benefit you (it also prevents DDDDDDDAAAAAADWD from activating)

Makes me wonder, is there a benefit of ESDF over RDFG?

I assume that EDSF would be the more superior as it is the natural typing position of a qwerty keyboard and therefore the pinky would be required to stretch more than the mobile, agile and superior opposable thumb.

I also assume that there is no difference with the Mac/OSX version of the game additionally...?

In relation to the "patching" that was done recently, they did remove the music from it from what I've read, but the game still has the v1.01 on it. I have no idea if that's correct or not though, I don't have OSX to check myself.
