Gex 3 PS1 Wrong Warp Setup?

I found a setup for the Wrong Warp on PS1 that works on emulator. Since we still don't know if the Wrong Warp works on console it would be great if someone could try this setup a few times, so if it works just 1 time on console, we would know that it works and we could route a new Any% PS1 Route, which would be awesome!

I can't test it myself because on the PAL version the camera rotates a bit different for some reason, and this is the only setup I found that works consistently. The Wrong Warp is way more precise than on N64.

It's been tested and confirmed by Reece, the Wrong Warp (and this Setup) works on Console!!

It's also both works with and without Fast Disk Speed on PS2, so it most definitely also works on normal PS1! Now we just have to route it, but that shouldn't be too hard, because it's quite similar to Any% (No ID) on N64. Let's do it! :D

I can try working on a route :D

That would be awesome! It would especially interesting to see how long it takes to get 2 coins in Mythology Network. I already found a Slappy Valley Clip Setup, but only because Zander tested it and got it before :)

Good job on the Slappy Valley setup! :D I timed how long it would take me to get 1, 2, and all 3 bonus coins in Mythology Network. Timing starts when I first move Gex in the level and ends when I exit the level.

1 bonus coin: 0:34 2 bonus coins: 2:03 3 bonus coins: 2:21

I wonder if going for all 3 bonus coins is worth it or not :P I guess another level that I have to time is Holy Moses.

There are also 3 unnecessary hard skips that I didn’t go for that could be used in a TAS. The first skip involves jumping on a flying rezling from the second huge cloud directly to the high grounds that skips the second Hercules power up. This skip saves around 15 seconds. The second skip again involves Gex jumping on a rezling, but this time from the third huge cloud and it saves around 4 seconds. The third skip is jumping from the moveable column where Alfred is at directly to the checkered platform, skipping the 3rd Hercules powerup, saving 16 seconds. I wonder if there is any way going up the waterfall at the beginning. :)

Hmm, I wonder if it would be worth to only go for 1 coin in Mythology Network. The difference between 1 and 2 coins is really big. I think in the old N64 Any% every Coin only took about 30 seconds to get. So I think either we get 3 Coins, 1 Coin or No Coin at all in this level. Not going into this level would also skip getting 2 Remotes. But I don't know if there are any other coins that are faster to get than the ones in Mythology Network.

Also, since the Donkey TV-Cancel works we have to see what the best route in Western Station is with that glitch! :D

I just realized that we have to go into Mythology Network to at least get 1 Coin. The only Coin we don't get before is the one in Tut TV. Reece, can you time how long it takes to get 2 and all 3 Coins in Tut TV? :)

@rEECE: Did you also beat the Boss after you got the Wrong Warp? The things is, it softlocked 2 times I have gotten it on PAL console at the beginning of the Boss fight. I don't know if this is because it's PAL or because of scratches in the Disk, but if it softlocks at the Bossfight this route is RIP.

If you haven't been at the Bossfight after the WW, can you please test this first? Also, here is the best and easiest and most consistent Setup yet:

I didn't beat the boss yet with WW. I want to say this really quick to you before my testings: Whenever I enter the bossfight entrance with a karate kick skipping the door (Like the N64 route does), it softlocks every single time. So if you are doing that, then maybe that is the cause of the softlocks that you had? I’ll get back to you later on with the times and everything else. Great setup! I will test this out for sure :D

Oh, so it softlocks everytime when you do the karate kick, also when not Wrong Warping? That is interesting. And would be awesome if it's just because of that :)

Thanks for timing and testing all this! :D

EDIT: YES! Without karate-kicking into the bossfight entrance it works!! Also, my newest setup for this literally works 100%, also on PAL console. It even skips preloading the Cutscene!

Yeah, it softlocks everytime. I think that is because the PS version gets a fatal error. :P I tested all three WW setups for quite some time and unfortunately, I only got the first original setup that you posted. I guess having the PAL version is a huge advantage over the NTSC version with the WW :)

Here are my Holy Moses times.

2 bonus coins: 0:14 3 bonus coins: 1:11

I got the 3rd coin quickly by standing on top of the first platform that blows fire in that room and then shoot up at that coin. I wonder if this video’s route can be used or not to get remotes quickly.

There are a total of 33 bonus coins and we need to collect 31 coins for this Any% route. We could…

A: Collect 2 bonus coins from Holy Moses, don’t collect the longest bonus coin to get in the other levels besides Holy Moses and Mythology Network, and get all 3 bonus coins in Mythology Network.

Or

B: Collect all 3 bonus coins in every level besides Mythology Network and only collect 1 bonus coin from Mythology Network.

There could be better options, what do you think? :D The average bonus coin to get in Holy Moses if we collect all 3 bonus coins is 23.66 seconds and the average bonus coin to get in Mythology Network if we collect all 3 bonus coins is 47 seconds so personally I prefer Choice B over Choice A. Here are my thoughts for now :)

Hm, It's really strange that the newest WW setup didn't works for you, because I used the NTSC version on emulator for the video. Did you fly really low? Because that is the most important. Maybe also pressing/not pressing the fast forward button for the cutscene can get it to work.

For the Coins: I think Choice B would be faster, so that sounds better :P The Camel TV-Cancel seems really interesting, but how long does it take to get 1/2/3 remotes in this level? I mean you don't really have to time that now, but from your 100% and Any% PS1 experience you can maybe take a guess? :D

After figuring out if we get any Remotes in Tut TV, Or actually before, the last big think to test/route is Western Station with Donkey TV-Cancel. Testing the fastest route before would be good, so we could compare Tut TV remotes to Western Station remotes :)

I find it really strange as well :P I did fly low and maybe it’s a console problem or something. I also tried what you said but no luck. Here are my guesses on getting remotes while collecting all 3 bonus coins in Holy Moses.

1 remote: 1:50 2 remotes: 3:55 (1:57.5 per remote) 3 remotes: 4:50 (1:36.6 per remote and does a 1 frame TV cancel trick)

Adding in another 1 frame trick in the run can make the category more frustrating in RTA. The time to collect all 3 bonus coins and exit the level is 1:11 but also collecting 1 remote with that from the level is about 1:50 so I think we should collect at least one remote in this level. What do you think? I wonder what remote we could remove from the run if we only get 1 remote in Holy Moses. Do you know the average time that you get for each remote or the longest remote to get on the N64 version? So many things to think about, lol :)

One possible Western Station route: Get on donkey to climb the hill. Get off the donkey and karate kick all the way to the first card. Jump to the checkpoint and go to the top of the mountain with the donkey while hitting the checkpoint in the process. TV Cancel off of the TV and while on the donkey, go and collect the bonus coin that is on top of the gray building. The bonus coin might disappear in the process of TV canceling so if that happens then have Gex kill himself and the coin will reappear. I wonder if there is a setup for the TV cancel to prevent that such as TV Cancelling or even jumping (while on the donkey after TV canceling) in the opposite direction of the coin. :P

Anyways, drop down and get the card inside the gray building and collect the third card from the 2nd gray building and die from the flames after collecting the card. Gex will spawn beside the checkpoint. Now it is pretty much the same route that the N64 route does from this point on. Get the 4th card from “Itznot Mine” and back, making sure to let the skeleton guy hit you twice with his head. Then go up the sandy hill and get off the donkey. Collect the 5th card on the train track and go inside the TV area. Collect the 2nd bonus coin before doing the N64 TV cancel strat. After the TV cancel, collect the third bonus coin and remote.

If by any chance the Any% route has too many death abuses then we can always TV cancel off the 2nd TV with the donkey and go to the third TV without dying. What do you think about this route? :D

That route sound great! And if this route has "too many" death abuses, then we could just eat 1 or 2 life-flies besides the TV in Mystery TV :P

And I am not really sure what remote takes the longest to get. That's why I'm also not sure if we should collect 1 remote in Tut TV. I woud first not collect any remotes in Tut TV, but it may be faster.

Nice thinking about the life flies :D Hmm, I timed some long remote detours that I could think of and also timed collecting 1 remote from the end of collecting all 3 bonus coins in Holy Moses and it appears that “Survive the Wall of Death” remote in Buccaneer Program is the longest remote that we could skip. The next is “Collect 5 of a Kind” in Western Station. :)

Times “Ride the Camel to the Ancient Temple” remote in Holy Moses About 0:42

“Survive the Wall of Death” remote in Buccaneer Program About 1:03

“Collect 5 of a Kind” remote in Western Station About 0:51

So I guess we could skip the Buccaneer Program remote, what are your thoughts on this? :P

In Any% no ID we didn't even get the "Survive the Wall of Death" remote :D In Buccaneer Program we just get the 3 coins and then the Remote that is only like 6 seconds away from the last coin :D

So maybe we could skip collecting 5 of a Kind in Western Station. But we also have to collect the 3 coins in this level, so that is hard to time :) I think we should figure out and time the best route for Western Station that collects all remotes in that level (Maybe the route you suggested) and then also figure out and time the best route with skipping 1 remote, like "Collect 5 of a Kind". Of course each route also has to collect all 3 coins :)

Oh, thanks for telling me about Buccaneer Program :) Here are my Western Station times.

3 Remotes: 2:30 2 Remotes: 1:35

Collecting 2 remotes is nearly a minute faster without collecting the 3rd remote. I used the route that I mentioned before for the 3 remote route. Here is what I did for the 2 remote route: Get on the donkey to climb the hill. While going to the checkpoint area, make Gex get hit 3 times by the 3 cactus spots that are in the way. Jump up to the checkpoint, get on the donkey, and hit the checkpoint. Go and collect the bonus coin and jump up to the high grounds from where the bonus coin is at with the donkey. TV Cancel off of the TV and drop down directly to where the entrance of the “Collect 5 of a Kind” TV area and go in. Collect the 2nd bonus coin. Get hit and spawn back to the checkpoint. The ending is the same compared to the 3 remote route. :D

I think skipping the “Collect 5 of a Kind” remote could be the fastest way. What do you think about the 2 remote route? I will try and improve on any routes too :)

This seems good :) But you timed the 2 remotes + 3 Bonus coins in Western Station to be 1:35. But in Holy moses you timed 1 remoted from the beginning of the 3rd coin, right? How long would Holy moses be with 3 Coins + 1 Remote? Maybe it's not faster? :P

Hopefully we will soon have the (what seems to be) fastest route :D

Right, I timed 1 remote from the beginning of the 3rd coin :) Here are my final times :P

Holy Moses: Collecting a remote from the beginning to the end while collecting the 3 bonus coins 1:51

Holy Moses: Collecting a remote from the beginning of collecting the 3rd coin to the end 0:41

Holy Moses: From the beginning to collecting the 3 bonus coins 1:10

Western Station: Collecting 2 Remotes with the 3 bonus coins 1:35

Western Station: Collecting all 3 Remotes with the 3 bonus coins 2:30

Hmm, if we decide to not collect a Holy Moses remote, then it would take us 1:10 to collect the 3 coins in Holy Moses, and 2:30 to collect all 3 remotes (with 3 coins) in Western Station. So 1:10 plus 2:30 is 3:40.

If we decide to collect a Holy Moses remote, then it would take us 1:51 to collect the 3 coins and an extra remote in Holy Moses, and 1:35 to collect 2 remotes (with 3 coins) in Western Station. So 1:51 plus 1:35 is 3:26 that is 14 seconds faster compared to 3:40.

So I think we could collect the remote from Holy Moses instead of not getting it. What do you think? I think it’s great that the PS route is this different from the N64 route :D

Yeah, I think it would be great if the PS1 route is different than the N64 route :) But we can't decide what the fastest route is, we can just test it :P But to collect 1 remote in Tut TV sounds good. We can also still improve the route after one of us has done a run of this category :P But what else is there left to time now?

N64 Rules Update

Hey everyone. There have been a few rules updates/clarifications, mostly regarding N64 categories.

  • [N64] Item duplication is now allowed in No Wrong Warp, No TV-Cancel and All Remotes. It remains banned in 100% and No Item Duplication, as it would defeat the purpose of those categories.
