Frogger 2: Swampy's Revenge PC/PSX Differences
Updated 4 years ago by MagicalWitchAshley

Most of the changes to the PSX version also apply to the Dreamcast version of the game. The GBC version of the game is completely omitted since it's a different game entirely.

Release Dates: Dreamcast NA - September 30, 2000 Windows NA - October 1, 2000 PlayStation NA - October 10, 2000

  • We know the PSX version was the last version released, and the Dreamcast was the first for some reason.
  • The Dreamcast/PSX builds are either "dumbbed down" versions of the PC build, incomplete PC builds, or a combination of the two.

PSX KNOWN VERSION DIFFERENCES: (Last updated 7/11/16)

  • Loading is significantly longer
  • Texture quality noticeably reduced
  • Music is obviously compressed
  • New memory card screens specific to the PSX version
  • Loading screens are changed
  • Multiple menus have different graphics and text for Windows keys/PSX button differences
  • When loading it seems that cycles start as soon as they are loaded into the game's RAM making some early cycles impossible on PSX.
  • The PSX version seems to have a lower cap for how fast inputs can be processed. This is probably a hardware limitation, as the PSX only polls for controller inputs at 53.2224 MHz. That's about less than once per frame.
  • Frogger seems to have less frames of animation in general, and this could be another hardware limitation. This is easily noticable when he preforms his double jump. Could be because the PSX's pixel fillrate is only 70 Mpix/sec.
  • The looping blue 'Frogger 2' background results screen is drastically slower on the PSX.
  • Name entry when the player sets a new record for the best time on a stage is changed to account for the lack of a keyboard keys on the PSX (3 initials, pressing up/down selects a letter, pressing left/right moves spaces, pressing the X button saves the letter currently selected, etc).
  • Screen shaking effects are amplified (best seen on stages like Boulder Canyon and Space Suckers)
  • When collecting frogs the particle effect is heavily reduced
  • Butterfly green partifle effects are slighty reduced
  • Smoke when platforms disappear/after fire is slightly reduced
  • Rat enemies in stages like Goldmine move slightly slower
  • The 'X-Wing' enemies in stages like Space Station lack their final textures
