Battles you can, and cannot run from

FF1 has some monsters that, despite your best efforts, you just cannot get away from. This section will detail the monsters that are inescapable in the game.

The format will read as follows. First it will be the monster name as it appears in each translation of each platform, then where you will encounter them, and how many of them you can expect to see in the battle. Then any additional notes, if they apply.

WIZARD (NES, WiiVC, WiiUVC), Piscodemon (PSX, GBA, PSP): Marsh Cave: 1-4 Cavern of Earth: 1-4 Ice Cavern: 3-7 In the Marsh Cave, they only appear guarding some treasure chests, notably the Crown In the Cavern of Earth, they appear as random encounters on floors 3 and 4 In the Ice Cavern, they appear as a random encounter on the first floor They resist every attack element except Lightning.

EARTH (NES, WiiVC, WiiUVC), Gnoma (PSX), Earth Elemental (GBA, PSP): Cavern of Earth: 1 (always solo) Chaos Shrine (final dungeon): 2-4 In the Cavern of Earth, they appear guarding some treasure chests throughout the cave, or as a 1/64 encounter on Lich's floor In the Chaos Shrine, they appear as a random encounter on Lich's floor They resist most elements, but are weak to Fire!

CEREBUS + WzOGRE (NES, WiiVC, WiiUVC), Hellhound + Ogre Mage (PSX, GBA, PSP): World map near Waterfall, Caravan, and Onrac: 1-3 dogs accompanies 0-2 ogres Mt. Gulg: 0-1 dogs accompany 1-2 ogres In Mt. Gulg, they only appears as random encounters on floors 3 and 5 It may appear with a Green Ogre and Hyena, and if they do you can escape from that battle! The Ogre Mage only resists earth, while the Hellhound resists fire, but is weak to ice.

FIRE (NES, WiiVC, WiiUVC), Pyros (PSX), Fire Elemental (GBA, PSP): Mt. Gulg: 1-2 Chaos Shrine (final dungeon): 3-4 In Mt. Gulg, they appear as 1/64 encounters on floors 2 and 3, also guarding some treasures on floor 2; they appear as a 6/64 encounter on Marilith's floor In the Chaos Shrine, they appear as a random encounter on Marilith's floor They resist a few elements, including fire, but are weak to ice.

FrGIANT + FrWOLF (NES, WiiVC, WiiUVC), Ice Gigas + Winter Wolf (PSX, GBA, PSP): Ice Cavern: 1 giant accompanies 0-2 wolves World map near Onrac, Waterfall, and Gaia: 1 giant accompanies 0-2 wolves Chaos Shrine (final dungeon): 2 giants accompanies 2-6 wolves In the Ice Cavern, they appear as a 3/64 encounter on the second floor, and as a 6/64 encounter on the third floor In the Chaos Shrine, they only appear as a random encounter on the second floor going up Both resist fire, and are weak to ice.

ZomBULL + TROLL (NES, WiiVC, WiiUVC), Necrotaur + Troll (PSX), Minotaur Zombie + Troll (GBA, PSP): Citadel of Trials: 1-3 minotaurs with no trolls World map: 1-4 minotaurs accompanies 0-2 trolls In the Citadel of Trials, they appear as a random encounter on the second floor, the one with the pillar maze On the world map, they appear along the long-forested path to Lufenia The minotaur resists a few elements, including ice, but is weak to fire. The troll resists nothing, and is weak to fire.

GHOST (NES, WiiVC, WiiUVC), Ghost (PSX, GBA, PSP): Sunken Shrine: 2-5 The various ports of the game swap the floor numbers, so for reference: First floor is the top floor, where the mermaids and Rosetta Stone reside. Fifth floor is the bottom floor, where Kraken resides. They appear as random encounters on floors 2 and 4 The ghost resists many elements, including ice, but is weak to fire.

PHANTOM (NES, WiiVC, WiiUVC), Death Eye (PSX, GBA, PSP): Chaos Shrine (final dungeon): 1 (always solo) Appears as a forced encounter a few steps before where the Lute is to be used On the Famicom version, it also appears on Chaos' floor. All random encounters were removed for Chaos' floor for every version of the game afterwards. The phantom resists many elements, including ice, but is weak to fire.

WATER (NES, WiiVC, WiiUVC), Aquos (PSX), Water Elemental (GBA, PSP): Sunken Shrine: 1-3 Chaos Shrine (final dungeon): 2-6 In the Sunken Shrine, they appear as random encounters on floors 2 and 5; they also guard a couple of treasure chests on floor 4 In the Chaos Shrine, they appear as a random encounter on Kraken's floor. They may also appear with a Water Naga, but this is not an inescapable battle! The water resists a few elements, including fire, but is weak to ice.

ZombieD (NES, WiiVC, WiiUVC), Dragon Zombie (PSX, GBA, PSP): Citadel of Trials: 1-2 Chaos Shrine (final dungeon): 2-4 In the Citadel of Trials, it is only seen guarding the escape chair next to the Rat's Tail. In the Chaos Shrine, they appear as random encounters on floor 2 going up In GBA and PSP, it will also appear in the Lifespring Grotto as a puzzle by Dark Bahamut. They may accompany 1-3 Wizard Vampires, and if they do you can run from that battle! The dragon resists many elements, including ice, but is weak to fire.

Blue D (NES, WiiVC, WiiUVC), Blue Dragon (PSX, GBA, PSP): Mirage Tower: 1 (always solo) It appears as a 1/64 encounter on floors 2 and 3, and it guards the teleporter going up to the Flying Fortress In GBA and PSP, it will also appear in the Lifespring Grotto as a puzzle by Dark Bahamut. In PSP, it can also appear as a random encounter in the Labyrinth of Time, but you can escape from that battle! It resists lightning and earth, but is weak to fire.

WORM (NES, WiiVC, WiiUVC), Purple Worm (PSX, GBA, PSP): Chaos Shrine (final dungeon): 1-2, OR 3-4 The 1-2 group will appear as a random encounter on the entrance floor of the final dungeon The 3-4 group will appear as a random encounter on Tiamat's floor In the Famicom version, the 1-2 group appears on Chaos' floor. All random encounters were removed for Chaos' floor for every version of the game afterwards. They resist earth, and have no weaknesses.

Gas D (NES, WiiVC, WiiUVC), Green Dragon (PSX, GBA, PSP): Waterfall: 1 (always solo) Chaos Shrine (final dungeon): 2-4 In the Waterfall, the dragon appears as a 1/64 encounter In the Chaos Shrine, they appear as a random encounter on the third floor going up In the Famicom version, the solo fight will appear on Chaos' floor. All random encounters were removed for Chaos' floor for every version of the game afterwards. In GBA and PSP, it will also appear in the Lifespring Grotto as a puzzle by Dark Bahamut. They resist earth, and are weak to ice.

EYE (NES, WiiVC, WiiUVC), Evil Eye (PSX, GBA, PSP): Ice Cavern: 1 (always solo) Flying Fortress: 1 (always solo) In the Ice Cavern, it is the famed forced encounter guarding the Levistone. Useful for grinding, since it gives a high exp:time ratio. In the Flying Fortress, it appears as a random encounter on the first two floors It resists earth, and has no weaknesses, but only has 162 HP!

VAMPIRE (NES, WiiVC, WiiUVC), Vampire (PSX, GBA, PSP): Cavern of Earth: 1 (always solo) Appears on floor 3 guarding the Star Ruby. It also appears in the Mirage Tower and Tiamat's floor of the Chaos Shrine, but you can escape from those battles! He can also appear in Whisperwind Cove, on the floor you need to put many souls to rest. It resists many elements, including ice, but is weak to fire.

WzSAHAG + R.SAHAG (NES, WiiVC, WiiUVC), Sahagin Prince + Sahagin Chief (PSX, GBA, PSP): Sunken Shrine: 1-2 princes accompany 8 or 7 chieftains, depending on how many princes appear They appear as random encounters on floors 2, 3, and 4 If the princes appear with white sharks instead, you can escape from that battle! The prince, chieftain, and shark all resist fire and earth, and are weak to lightning.

GARLAND (NES, WiiVC, WiiUVC), Garland (PSX, GBA, PSP): Chaos Shrine: 1 (always solo) HP: 106 (NES), 212 (PSX, GBA, PSP) First boss of the game! He will knock you all down!

PIRATE (NES, WiiVC, WiiUVC), Pirate (PSX, GBA, PSP): Pravoca: 9 (always 9) HP: 6 (NES, PSX), 24 (GBA, PSP) Bikke sends them after you! Ar, mateys!

ASTOS (NES, WiiVC, WiiUVC), Astos (PSX, GBA, PSP): Western Keep: 1 (always solo) HP: 168 (NES, PSX), 420 (GBA, PSP) He betrays you after you return the crown to him! He can also appear in Whisperwind Cove, on the floor you need to put many souls to rest.

LICH (NES, WiiVC, WiiUVC), Lich (PSX, GBA, PSP): Cavern of Earth: 1 (always solo) HP: 400 (NES), 800 (PSX), 1200 (GBA and PSP) Chaos Shrine (final dungeon): 1 (always solo) HP: 500 (NES), 1000 (PSX), 2800 (GBA and PSP) The earth is rotting no thanks to the lich!

KARY (NES, WiiVC, WiiUVC), Marilith (PSX, GBA, PSP): Mt. Gulg: 1 (always solo) HP: 600 (NES), 1200 (PSX), 1440 (GBA and PSP) Chaos Shrine (final dungeon): 1 (always solo) HP: 700 (NES), 1400 (PSX), 3200 (GBA and PSP) She will burn you in the hellfire!

KRAKEN (NES, WiiVC, WiiUVC), Kraken (PSX, GBA, PSP): Sunken Shrine: 1 (always solo) HP: 800 (NES), 1600 (PSX), 1800 (GBA and PSP) Chaos Shrine (final dungeon): 1 (always solo) HP: 900 (NES), 1800 (PSX), 3600 (GBA and PSP) The water will no longer flow!

TIAMAT (NES, WiiVC, WiiUVC), Tiamat (PSX, GBA, PSP): Flying Fortress: 1 (always solo) HP: 1000 (NES), 2000 (PSX), 2400 (GBA and PSP) Chaos Shrine (final dungeon): 1 (always solo) HP: 1100 (NES), 2200 (PSX), 5500 (GBA and PSP) The instigator will suffocate you! In GBA and PSP, she can rarely drop the Rune Staff during the Chaos Shrine fight.

CHAOS (NES, WiiVC, WiiUVC), Chaos (PSX, GBA, PSP): Chaos Shrine (final dungeon): 1 (always solo) HP: 2000 (NES), 4000 (PSX), 20,000 (GBA and PSP) Be prepared for some pain.
