Glitch use during runs

Hello everybody!

I'd like to ask one very important thing. In Fallout 1 and 2 (methinks), there is a glitch/bug that can be used the same as the A (attack) key. It's 0 (zero) and it works in conversations, it allows us to end the talk. If the other character is agressive towards us, it will attack us after the talk nevertheless. Likewise, if the character 'bugs' us when meeting (for example, like the first mutant in front of the military base always opens the conversation upon seeing us), he will 'bug' us again. The glitch it can be used in one or two dialogues and save some time. Please let know if it's OK to do that, it does save a few seconds. From the point of view of original maker of the Fallout runs (Devin), he says that it's ok (stated on the speeddemosarchive forum) and it's built-in so probably it's OK, but I want to be sure. Thanks : )

Hmmm that's interesting, I'll have to look into that

Good thing that you mentionted that bug. Even though it has very limited use, it can save some seconds. I tested it on every talk in the any% category and here's what I've come up with:

  • Supermutant #1, the one that gets you to Lieutenant - useless, because using 0 makes him start the talk again,
  • Lieutenant - useless, he starts the talk again as soon as you end it,
  • Supermutant #2, the one on the 3rd floor - it saves a fraction of a second, either you go 2,1 or just 0,
  • Supermutant #3, at the entrance to Military Base - doesn't work,
  • Morpheus - useless, because he has to take you to the Master,
  • Master - now here you don't usually talk with him, but if you happen to miss the combat initiation somehow, you may end the conversation with him using 0 and then initiating combat again, so no time save, but can be a run saver in an unfortunate situation
  • Jeremiah - useless because he has to kick you out,
  • Overseer - now here is a valid time save, normally the conversation with him lasts for about 2-3 seconds (I didn't time it so I'm not sure) and ending the conversation as soon as it happens skips all of the dialogue.

It could be plenty useful in "all good endings" (or hypothetically, "all bad endings" or whatever other version one may think of), I'm not even touching that :D

As for the segmented/singlesegment run, yeah, pretty much two conversations (tested 'in-mind' and then in practice, too).

As much as a voice of runner counts, I'd like to vote green light for the 0 thing. We are using a glitch that is in the game already - and yes, it does save time so we are going for an even better record.

I'd love to hear the voice of the moderators and hopefully, make it possible to use it.

I don't see why it shouldn't be allowed. I think people didn't really use it because they didn't know or forgot about it.

Yeah, there is no reason not to allow it.

Thanks for green light! Time is shaved by a few seconds now :)

BTW, off-topic, could I ask you or anybody else to help me or at least point me in the right direction as to record the runs? (just read the rest please) I would be probably eternally grateful.

For now, I've been using stock Fallout 1.1 (US version 1.0 + Interplay patch to 1.1 and that's it) and recording it is rather a nightmare. I'd like (for now at least) to refrain from using hi-res patch, and all that does record any stuff from it is: Growler Cam (but it's VERY unstable, suffice to say I can say it's not working) and BSR Screen Recorder (and that is currently the best option, tho the FPS aren't perfect) ; early Fraps does work, but it strangely won't record movies and cutscenes.. I've tested about more than a dozen programs, tried different configs, I could be doing something terribly wrong, it depends on the config, PC, stuff... Please help, if you can. Thank you.

Just use the hi-res patch, which supports Direct3D.

As far as I remember, people were using Hypercam or Camtasia for old 2D games.

PLANET - The only real tip I can give you is to try Open Broadcaster Software. It works perfectly fine for me, yet I'm also using the resolution patch.
