The new update is out as of 2 hours ago now (at the time of this posting)! The update is complete with patch notes, in Spanish. There are many changes, but I felt like these were the most notable and impactful to players as a whole overall:

  • In Arcade, stages 2, 3, and 4 will have FF3 alternate routes now!

  • Akuma's spawn requirements in Arcade mode have been adjusted. The player (presuming it's a solo run) will now need a minimum of 475,000 points to trigger the battle (and thus the full run of the Bonus sub-categories). In multiplayer, an additional 115,000 points per extra player will be required for Akuma to spawn.

  • Akuma's spawn requirements in Musou are even higher: 695,000 points plus 35,000 per extra player in multiplayer.

  • For parries, attempting to parry with less than 20 mp only takes 5hp now (in v0.3 it was 10hp). However, you will no longer still parry an attack. In the previous version, it was possible to spend hp in this way to continue to parry, in v0.4 this is no longer possible.

  • Certain cutscene events in-game can now be skipped with the attack button. This may very well alter the timing method of secret characters(?).

I'm sure there will be a lot to go over on Friday when the new release is out, but I wanted to just post it here in case anyone wasn't aware of the .04 update!

I apologize if this was an inappropriate post, but I know this place doesn't really have a lot of activity, so just a little heads-up in case anyone missed it!

I look forward to getting runs up of it as soon as possible!

Now that I've got a run with the bonus stages submitted, I'm going to be putting the information to the real test later tonight. Hopefully results on No Bonus runs soon!

The bonus stages are only different if you pick top/bot route I believe. I haven't had any instances where selecting the same one yielded a different bonus stage. I'm going to test the deaths tonight to see if that has any further results.

And hoping to get a run up soon! ^ _ ^

I may possibly have a theory as to purposely not triggering the extra stages after the Akuma fight (which will also be just the Bison fight). It will need to be tested more, but here is what happened fairly consistently across my attempts at Normal/Bonus runs.....

  • Sometimes I would not get all of the barrels on the 3rd bonus round. This could be either with a death on the prior stages, or with no deaths leading up to this point. Anytime this happened, my score ranged from anywhere between 380k - 430k+. I have a hard time getting to this point with lower scores, simply because in order to save time, we end up doing a lot of combos in this game xD

  • Occasionally, however, I would still get all of the barrels in the barrel bonus stages as well as fully destroying everything in the destructible bonus stages. At this point I'm thinking both deaths and score are for sure part of the equation here.

I was playing as Mai, truth be told I was actually trying to complete a run and thought I did! Only to see there were all of these afterwards so.....rip that recording T.T

I was able to get the bonus round of stages to start with around 477k points, give or take a few. For reference, if Akuma spawns into the Bison fight, that will always ensure the extra rounds happen yes?

I think that's probably the easiest option for now, because other than that it would be probably the starting time for all characters (normal or secret) would have to be changed to when you actually gain control vs selection -- and I can see that being a little messy too since the secret characters have control the moment the screen changes from select to stage 1.

So whatever you mods decide on that for now, I will make note of that! ^_^

That was part of the reason I initially asked the question -- I knew that going back to character select skips Damnd's laughing animation (even though you have to sit through it before you can move and go back to character select). I believe that is the only instance in the whole game where a scripted scene is different based on character choice.

It is certainly a tricky topic, at least to me. On one hand, you have to consider the fairness of time starting for normal characters vs secret characters. On the other hand, it is easy to lose over a second or more extra in the menu going for your secret character. Your idea to calculate the time and just add it when the run finishes seems like the simplest fix.

I was thinking that would be the best way to do it, yes. All you have to do is punch the telephone at the very start of the first screen, then walk left to bring the character select back up. It doesn't take very long, but I still wanted to ask to make sure I am starting the timer correctly.

Do we have to let the timer tick on the initial character select screen when punching the telephone box to go back to character select to pick the character we need? Or will the time only start upon selection of that character? (Example: I want to run as Mai)

Edit: The only reason I ask is because I just need clarification, I did read the rules but I just want to avoid a rejection for starting time incorrectly.

I'm thrilled that I was able to get the game added to the site to be officially recognized for speedruns! I have no idea why it wasn't already here but.....here we are now! ^_^

Information on the game overall seems somewhat scarce, so I am open to discussion for any ideas other players might have regarding categories, roms used, etc. I spent a lot of time doing research and based on my efforts, the rules have been put in place as they are utilizing my best judgment, and other games added to the board already as precedents/templates for structuring the board for Denjin Makai.

I plan to do long-term running of this game because I absolutely love it, and I hope to see some runners join me soon!

Update for 11-14-2021: After conversation with Coderangetsu and some people looking to get runs up soon, we've decided the Cheat% category is way too much of a meme for us to even have created in the first place, and it will be removed at the time of this post. Points for this argument are varied, but mainly due to the facts that....

1: It only has two runs, both of which the times are not being shown as played with the intention of playing the game fast (speedrun.com rules 101). One run for Hawk on Easy at 41:10 and another Smasher run on Hard in a whopping 2h 7m 38s.......

2: The category is called Cheat% which just sounds silly in and of itself (and speedrun.com doesn't like categories being named with a % unless it's any, low%, or 100%). Only one function of the cheat menu (the invulnerability) is used, the stage selection isn't allowed.

3: What's the point of doing a speedrun in a beat 'em up where the threat of death is non-existant? Part of the thrill is knowing you have a chance to lose. Victories mean nothing without the real chance of defeat.

This decision wasn't made with the intention of just removing runs just to do it. I understand some people may find this a bit sudden. I know our game isn't really that popular in the grand scheme of things, but we should at least present ourselves as respectably as possible. Part of that is cleaning up the place around here so it's a little less of a meme. This will probably be the last major adjustment to the board, at least until if/when anything else comes up.

Hey, all! I've recently been appointed as new super mod here, and I plan to do runs over time long-term. I've updated the overall game rules tab to show anyone interested in picking runs up in the future when we start/stop time for convenience, as to be in line with the original explanation Soulless gave.

I should (mostly) be checking the site regularly, as I'll be uploading my own runs in different titles as well as this one, so runs should be back to steady verification for the forseeable future!
