The evidence that is required for runs should be better determined overall. Right now, I just sorta guess if a time needs evidence or not and what sort of evidence should be required. For this idea, the WR time would definitely need a video, since the game doesn't have a way to time multiple missions while showing that those missions were played. I think that the mansion runs could go into misc. categories on the main leaderboard. Makes more sense to me that way, but I can see an argument for them being in the level leaderboard cause they're not categories for the entire game

I really like this idea. We could have a category for each of the mansions. I think that the timing could work where it starts when you can control Luigi in the first mission and ends in the boss mission when the final E. Gadd call tone is heard. That may be a weird way to end the timing, but my reasoning for that is that the in-game timer for the mission ends when you receive the last call. You also can't control Luigi anymore after that point. I think that this run should also be able to be done on a completed file. That way, you could run the later mansions without having to start a new file every time

Ah, you're talking about the pesky ones in the Jungle Exhibit. You can actually kill the crows with the strobulb before using the gold bloonberry. I think that there are only like 2 or 3. I can't remember though

Yeah, it's not rng; it's just movement. Whenever you put the flashlight onto the mouse, it flinches. It will only flinch once though, so to make it flinch a second time, the flashlight needs to come off and back onto the mouse. To make this happen, you need to do some fairly precise movement. It starts with where you are when the mouse cutscene thing starts. I find that it's best to position Luigi just below the carpet in front of the doors. Any further away from the stairs, the mouse won't flinch at all. Any closer, you risk running into to railing. Now for the rest of the trick... the first flinch comes from just immediately looking in the general direction of the mouse. Just run to the stairs. Be sure to keep a diagonal angle though to keep from hitting the railing and to eventually get the flashlight off the mouse. The second flinch happens when you reach the stairs. You turn Luigi to run straight down. If the flashlight was pointed enough to the right, then it will have come off the mouse. Moving Luigi straight down will move the flashlight back onto the mouse for a second flinch. If all of this makes sense, then you'll see what I'm talking about by watching a successful early mouse. Here I got it in my 4:10:59 100% run at 25:53 in the video

In my most recent run (3:05:28), I was able to use all of your new strats. I really like the gold strat that you suggested. I had level 3 for D-3 and E-1 which helps a lot. Almost had level 2 for B-3. Your Conservatory strat is something that I thought was possible for a long time. I'm glad to see it actually is with the right approach. The E-2 route change also feels faster, even though I accidentally didn't use the portal back to the entrance after getting toad. I wonder if a route change like that is still faster in 100%... Also, have you done any searching for an out of bounds route? It'd be really awesome to see some more cool glitches in the run.

Hey @Bananana, for your most recent run submission, I would like you to upload your splits to https://splits.io and add them to your run. If you need any help on how to do this, just ask. If I need more evidence, I will let you know. In the future, If you beat the WR time, more evidence will be needed. Unfortunately, a video will be necessary. I can't think of any other way to verify a WR time. This is kind of a weird place to talk about this, but speedrun.com still hasn't implemented a messaging system yet, unfortunately, and I didn't know how you'd like me to contact you.

Those are some excellent ideas. I never even considered getting gold bones because I just wanted to avoid the E. Gadd call the first time. It is 200 gold and it doesn't take an extreme amount of time, so it might be better to go for them, but it still does take time. I'll have to do a run where I try getting gold bones. But also it may be good to think about not going for gold at all... any time you focus on getting gold, you're investing time. The current best known in-game time for the game is 3:01 (there is no video for this run, so that's why it's not on the leaderboard). That was set with 5948 gold at the end, which means he only unlocked the 2nd tier power surge and probably never focused on gold. Granted, this player is much better at the game than I ever was, so his time would be better than mine even if he did go for gold, but it is still worth looking into the idea of ignoring gold completely.

My setup involves a locker stand, my webcam, and 2 pieces of tape. The webcam is mounted to look down from the top of the stand. As for the 3DS, I just hold it in my hands with my wrists sitting on my desk under the locker stand. It is rather uncomfortable, but I got used to it. Also, if you don't have small hands, you may not be able to fit them between the legs of the locker stand. The kind of locker stand that I use looks kinda like this... http://www.staples-3p.com/s7/is/image/Staples/m003574478_sc7?$std$ If I'm not too lazy, I'll take a pic of my actual setup sometime. As for the software that you can use to record, I highly recommend open broadcaster software (OBS). It may take a bit to get situated for what you want, but as for free recording software out there, I can't think of anything else that can even compare.

Yeah, a picture of the file screen is more than you need actually. I only require proof for times that are close to WR. Something I should note though is that I won't accept a picture as evidence for WR times. The picture could've easily been edited, and there is actually a strat that can be used to "stall" the in-game timer. I plan to do something with this in about 2 months...

United StatesRiidolsk7 years ago

Yeah, I am pretty certain that the primary reason this game doesn't have more people running it is because of the fact that it's on 3DS. It's either difficult or expensive to record it. I've managed to do webcam% just fine, but not everyone can find a setup that works as well as mine.

United StatesRiidolsk7 years ago

This game has never received much activity. In the past 3 years, I have been the only "active" runner here. There have been a few others who have picked the game up for about a month or so, but that's it. I have not been actively running since summer 2016, but I still keep very close watch on this site, and I occasionally check the LMDM vod page on twitch to see if anyone has streamed anything speedrun related. Seeing somebody else running it (and getting decent times) would probably encourage me to return.

United StatesRiidolsk7 years ago

Hm, yes. The battery life was a problem that I encountered when I started running this game as well. I just do (did) all my runs with the charger connected. One thing you can do to extend the battery life a fair bit though is to turn off the wireless communications on the 3DS. As for the question about the timer, technically, you cannot stop the timer... but since videos are not a strict requirement, you could get away with it without me knowing, and I really wouldn't care. I only strictly require videos for the WR time and times that are very close to it. If you submit a video though, I will not tolerate you stopping the timer for any petty reason (battery life included). If you take a break in a video, the timer must keep running.

Cool! I'm not sure how much a 100% route would really be needed though. I think that most people are just interested in any%. The 100% route isn't too different from the any% route. If someone learns any% first, they'll have no problem going after 100% using just some notes (whether they are my notes or some that they make.) But if you or some other people are interested in a route, we could definitely work on that

United StatesRiidolsk8 years ago

So I've now finally got this thing done. Gosh that was late. So now that it is done, can you guys understand it? I have never made anything like this before, so I had no idea how detailed to make it. Let me know what you guys think. Route: http://www.speedrun.com/lm2/guide/a2n5f

Alright, I'm going with option 4. The IL leaderboards are ready. Unfortunately, there will be categories listed for levels that don't have them. Any mission time submitted under a scarescraper category will be rejected, and any scarescraper time submitted under a mission category will be rejected.

Alright, I've got some organization problems for an IL leaderboard http://www.speedrun.com/lm2/individual_levels The problem here started from trying to fit 2 IL leaderboards (34 story missions (with currently one category) and 36 Scarescraper types (9 levels with 4 modes (categories) each)) into one IL leaderboard. The way I have it setup now, there are extra categories for levels that don't have them.

What I want to have is 34 missions (levels) under 1 category and 9 Scarescraper types (levels) under 4 categories separate from the category(s) for the missions. I want to avoid using subcategories because times would get buried and would not show up in the nice grid that the IL leaderboard has.

I can't see any nice way to do this even with subcategories. If there is a way to organize it nicely, I don't know atm. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Or, if it is possible for you guys to add a second IL leaderboard to the game, that would be amazing.

United StatesRiidolsk8 years ago

Well, there are 4 main options I see now... This whole thing is not gonna be able to be what I want it to be. Option 1: I have every mission and every Scarescraper type listed individually under an Any% category name. There would be 70 entries for the list if it were that.

Option 2: The missions take the main leaderboard grid, and the Scarescraper levels get buried in a level called "Click for Scarescraper." On that level, the main category is kinda misnamed any%. I mean, any% is a fine name for the general Scarescraper category since 100% runs of Hunter 10F Hard or something like that will never happen; it will always be kinda like any% (fastest time). Under Any%, the level will have the 4 subcategories: "Hunter, Rush, Polterpup, Surprise" Those 4 subcategories will each have 9 more subcategories.

Option 3: The Scarescraper stays on the main leaderboard grid, and the missions get buried in a level called "Click for Missions." This option is pretty bad. There is an extra category that would be left blank on the main leaderboard, and all of the missions would be crammed into a subcategory with blank main categories at the top for "Hunter, Rush, Polterpup, Surprise." All 34 missions would have to be listed. There is no way for me to list different missions for each subcategory.

Option 4: All 34 missions and 9 Scarescraper types are on the level side in the grid for 43 levels. There are 5 categories (Any%, Hunter, Rush, Polterpup, Surprise), but the missions are blank for the Scarescraper modes, and the Scarescraper types are blank for Any%

I'm done messing with stuff for today... There may be a better way to do this, but right now, I think I'm gonna do either option 2 or 4. The IL leaderboard should be ready by next week unless I feel there is still a better way to have it set up that I have not figured out yet.

United StatesRiidolsk8 years ago

The IL leaderboard currently only includes times for the scarescraper (thrill tower) and not the actual levels. I plan to attempt to update it soon to include both the missions and the scarescraper. I will be using custom variables to do this, so if I can't figure it out, I will just keep the IL leaderboard as it is now. The Full-game categories will not be affected by my changes. My own runs in the level leaderboard will probably have to be resubmitted, however, which is no problem. Nobody else has posted any scarescraper runs, so I'm happy I wont be affecting anyone else. If this all works out, I will add the fastest times I know for the missions. I just thought I'd give this little announcement.

No, the bonus missions are not required to do. You can still do them if you want :P The only thing that they would contribute to is the 3 stars which is not a requirement anymore.

United StatesRiidolsk8 years ago

Ok, I've done some reading https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/low100_definitions.html I am deciding now that 3 stars is not a requirement for 100%. The ghosts are also not a requirement for 100% The only things required are: all upgrades, gems, and boos

I see that not all games lend themselves to 100% well. Things need to be cut sometimes, and I am deciding/ suggesting that getting 3 stars on every level and defeating every enemy (ghost) is not really a necessary element of this game to achieve 100% completion in the single player story mode. Everything besides the new requirements I am suggesting is an "extra objective" that really does not complete this game more in terms of collection.

A complete ghost container could be source to debate as a requirement, but there is only one ghost from the story that can not be caught (gold greenie). The story mode part of the ghost container is always complete at the end of any run, so it is such a small detail that it does not matter.

The scarescraper ghosts would never have anything to do with a category that does not specifically include the scarescraper.

Wow, I am rambling now, but this information/ opinion is kinda necessary-ish when we are making categories. Basically now, anything that has been put towards collectables% will now be 100%. As for old 100%, if anyone really wants to see some of it's requirements really return, they can suggest a new category.

Final overall question: Do you think that these are good new requirements for 100%?

Feel free to respond to any other parts of this obnoxiously large comment if you want.
