Hi, I'm new to speedrunning, and I need to know one thing before I start running SM64. How in God's name do you hold the damn controller?

Left hand stick right hand buttons. EZ

Are you running on N64? If so try looking up ways that you can hold the controller and test them out for like 10 minutes. Of course you could run on vc with a classic controller or pro controller depending on witch console your playing on but most mods would probably recommend playing on the original N64.

Whatever you get used to. Most people use left hand in the middle but some people like left hand on right prong and stretch their thumb out (not recommended if you have small hands lol)

How in the wide world would you even hit the Z button that way?

Right hand next to A and B buttons and use index finger for pressing Z.

If anyone says you can hold the N64 controller with left hand on left handle you should ignore them. You absolutely should hold the middle.

I use a wireless xbox one controller. Works well for me.

Lol when I was younger I used to play with left hand on left stick, pretty sure I used the ring finger on my right hand. Would not recommend it in hindsight but I remember being able to play comfortably with it, so who knows.
