Thread: The Future of Emulation for the Leaderboard

Started by: PlywoodPlywood

We have now separated emulator runs from the Console category on the main full game leaderboard. All emulator runs will now be in their own category. There are a total of 22 new categories for runs. This does NOT affect ILs, as they will be in a Console/Emulator category together. Any full game runs marked as emulator on PSTV/PSP/PS Vita (using Adrenaline) will stay on Console and unmarked as emulator to avoid confusion.

We had the idea to just have a variable for Standard Disc Speed (SDS) and Fast Disc Speed (FDS), but with the board the way it is structured and speedrun.com limitations, we were unable to add this due to it would be on all the boards. Instead, we are requiring you put SDS or FDS in your description, along with your emulator and version as you have always done.

All current emulator runs have been marked as Disc Speed: SDS. You are more than welcome to run SDS if you wish, pending you follow guidelines for emulator, settings, etc. FDS runs can only be done in DuckStation. Settings and guidelines can be found here: https://www.speedrun.com/post/boy7m (SDS), https://www.speedrun.com/post/tt3qi (FDS).

Any questions, concerns, etc., feel free to reach out. Happy running!

DuckStation version 2021-05-23 or later can now be used for Emulator runs for Fast Disc Speed (FDS).
With the new Emulator category, you can run SDS (Standard Disc Speed) or FDS. FDS allows for super fast loads, next to no frame drops/in-game lag, and an overall better experience.

You can only use DuckStation version 2021-05-23 or newer for this, as this has a Seek Speedup feature that enhances load times. No other emulator can compete with this. If you wish to use other emulators, you will have to run at SDS.

The following settings are required for FDS run submissions:

Console Settings:
- Enable Clock Speed Control (Overclocking/Underclocking): 600% (203.21MHz) - You can run this lower if need be on lower end systems.
CD-ROM Emulation:
- Read Speedup: 2x (Quad Speed)
- Seek Speedup: 10x

All other settings default.

An example run showing off this can be found here:

Please note: Turbo use is an on-going discussion as of July 2, 2021, and it currently banned. This was used in this run for testing purposes only.

As with all emulator runs, please post your version of DuckStation in your description and whether you are using SDS or FDS. Leaving this information out may result in your run being rejected.

Any questions, feel free to ask.

My vote is for option 2B. I will speak more for DuckStation. Default settings with CPU set to 333% and Quad Disc speed created near PSTV like loads without sacrificing stability. This was tested on a high-end PC (i9-9900K) by me and a relatively low-end PC (i5-2500) by JMC and both had similar results. If we do go with option 2B it will create a more level playing field for those who don't want to enter the console hardware arms race that is PSTV, but wants to play the console version.

I think keeping the settings as close to default with the minimal tweaks for DuckStation as suggested above makes it easier to understand for everybody.

We should also sunset most other emulators. Maybe DuckStation and RetroArch Beetle would be the only two approved emulators in this circumstance. This remains to be seen.

Great to see you back! We'd love to see you running this again. It's essentially a new game with all of these finds. Mostly credit to @Major_ZeroMajor_Zero for them.

I'd like to request mod/super mod status for the following game: https://www.speedrun.com/volume

The only runner/mod/super mod has not logged in since Aug 1 2020. I have a run pending that has been in the queue for 2 weeks now.

I have tried to contact via Twitch whispers but no response. I do not see any other viable way to contact.

My pending run: https://www.speedrun.com/volume/run/yo9k7pdy

Thank you.

I can vouch for a potential influx. Based on how you are in the MGSR community, I would be happy to let you be a mod if @GoldomGoldom is alright with it. I plan on doing all 800 ILs of this game, and someone will have to verify those lol

Summary of changes:

-Added all 100 ILs to Level Leaderboard. Made categories for each difficulty, and two categories for each IL. Fastest time and highest score.
-Added a NG/NG+ variable to full game runs. IMO, doing math to deduct time from the rank screens is weird. But not a significant time-save to separate the categories. So a simple variable to show if you used the rank screens or not is the best solution.
-Tweaked the rules (mainly format and clarity). Required audio for full game runs, but not for ILs. Added that music can be turned off or modified if you wish. @bmnbmn from our community made a modification to the game to change the in-game audio. We have a Metal Gear themed music pack for this. I think since the music can be shut off, modifying music should be allowed. And it does not affect things.
-Added an autosplitter for LiveSplit to Resources (from @bmnbmn ). Can only be used in DOS-BOX 0.74 (which is how I run).
-Changed the theme colors to match the ClockWerx red box more. Themed SRDC logo has been added. Added nice background and new trophy icons. Artwork courtesy of @JMCJMC
-Added other platforms as well as an option. Should separation need be once we learn about other platforms, we can cross that bridge then. Same w/ JP region.

@GoldomGoldom, let me know how you like the changes. I can always reverse something, and we can always discuss. I just wanted to make the changes and see what you thought first. If you have any issues, or if anybody else has feedback, feel free to reach out.

Great! I appreciate it! I will look to messing with structure in the next week or so. Have some other stuff on my plate at the moment. But I will get more players for ILs at least. A bunch of interest from my Metal Gear dudes.

Interested in ILs for this game. Could have fastest time, highest score or both. Myself and a few others are interested in running some ILs.

Side note: If you are looking for another moderator w/ experience, I'd be willing to help out. I can create and setup the ILs, etc. Check my profile for my experience.

Thanks.

Special treatment for @AllAgesGamingAllAgesGaming to retime only his times is not right. Never should be an option IMO. I'd say either separate or just don't. At the end of the day speedrunning is a bit of an arms race. If NTSC is the fastest, then just play NTSC and let NTSC/PAL be on the same board. Emulators are highly accessible along with obtaining an NTSC copy.

For something like this, separate PAL and NTSC. If it's that drastic of a difference, and you want everyone to play fair, just separate them. Doing math/conversions just sounds wack, and very confusing.

I believe just use component instead of HDMI, but we all do splitters typically.

If you have a fiber connection and perfect elements, it's only going to load and run as fast as a PS3. As Major already said, PSNow just emulates a PS3. There is no point to separation.

Emulate is a loose term in this sense. PSNow emulates, or represents a PS3. RPCS3 is totally different, 3rd party and not comparable.

Because we do this now. Drainage ditch card is now the standard. More often than not faster than rat.

Thread: Submitting runs with no leaderboard rank improvement

Started by: morrowheat23morrowheat23

Yeah the rank makes zero difference. Submit whenever you'd like, even if you only improve by a second every time. We encourage the activity. More often than not if you stay on the same category, you will always have the same rank unless you are going for Rank 1 (example: Big Boss on Extreme/European Extreme).
