Leaderboard Updates

Hello fellow Deadly Premonition runners. This game has had a lot more activity since the release of Origins on Switch, and it occurred to me that this board needs an update. Deadly Premonition 2 just released, so I assume some of you will try that one out, but I'd like to clear some stuff up here as well.

Rules - The rules didn't matter all that much with there being only two runners on the board for years, but now the game has some competition, and I think that calls for some new standards to the rules. Things such as requiring game audio, a clean video without cuts (especially quitting the application to prevent crashing), agreeing on the official time to start and stop the timer (as I see differing times for some people), and including the main menu before the start, as well as final results screen at the end.

Versions - It seems like Origins is the fastest version at the moment, due to framerate, loading times, and general performance of the game. Lazerlong made a good call on making each version it's own category, as they all perform very differently. What I'd like to do is make Origins the Main Category displayed up front, and also encourage people to try to optimize it with the Quint's Car Route. Buying Quint's Car before heading to the Art Gallery allows for much faster car travel when the game doesn't force you into a police vehicle. You can also fast travel to the Junkyard to get to the Graveyard faster during Harry's mission. I'll be trying this out myself on the Director's Cut and Origins versions in the future.

Discord - Is there a Discord? The Discord link in the tab seems to be expired or invalid. If there isn't a Discord, making one for DP1+2 Speedruns would probably be a good idea.

Feel free to share your thoughts. Happy to help reform things a bit here, and encourage some more activity.

A clean video without cuts is absolutely impossible. The former world record had a crash in it and a quit (to prevent a crash). My video also has at least 2 crashes. I've attempted Origins about 30 times and there has never been a run where the game didn't crash. Usually at least 2 hours into the game.

If you make it a requirement that the game can't crash or we can't close the application to prevent a crash, you won't have a leaderboard. It's that simple.

I just checked my notes. I made note of where the crashes occur so that I could try to prevent crashes myself by quitting out of the application. If you haven't run Origins then you should know the game usually crashes a minimum of 2 times throughout the run. If you watch Squiddsey's former WR, the first crash occurs at 1:29:34. My game ALWAYS crashes within 5 minutes of this area. The second crash occurs late in the game after you run around town as Emily following the dog. To prevent the second crash, when Emily reaches the phone, we save the game, then quit the application to avoid the late game crash.

The first crash is usually unavoidable. Even if you close out of the game. I've tried. The 2nd crash is usually avoidable if you close the application where I said to.

You misunderstood. A clean video without cuts means you're showing yourself quitting the app, and not cutting it out. This also means you should locally record, and not have a choppy Twitch vod compilation where your connection cuts. Stuff like that.

Ah ok - I definitely misunderstood then. As far as I know, we're all already doing that but making it a rule can't hurt.

There used to be a discord. Not sure what happened to it.

I like starting the timer just before you move for the first time personally. I like ending as you go through the checkpoint at the hotel at the end of the game but I suppose ending it at "Yes I'm Ready" at the end might be a better ending spot if we were voting on it.

It's not a dedicated speedrunning discord but my pal Whitney (@chemi_ro) on Twitter has the Friendly Premonition discord for all things related to Deadly Premonition. I can ask her to open up a speedrunning channel for us if we need a channel.

EDIT: Mellonnaise is the owner of Friendly Premonition. He'd be the main person we'd have to ask. But that might be the best place for us since it's already a dedicated Deadly Premonition discord.

Mello is willing to open up a channel (or channels) for us at Friendly Premonition if we don't want to just create a new server. Just throwing that out there.

There are lots of people there that are knowledgeable about the game. Having them in the same server as us might be useful but completely up to everyone else here as to whether or not we do that. I understand since it's not our server we have less control that way.

I've gone ahead and made some changes.

The rules have been updated, and I've made them very transparent and easy to understand.

Origins is Defaulted on the board, with Classic Xbox Version being the other sub category. I've split the Director's Cut into it's own category, as it's got some different content that may be touched upon in the future to make an even larger difference between the versions.

The Friendly Premonition Discord sounds like a good idea, but not entirely needed without some more community input. I'll wait for them to speak up about the changes.

Something I've been meaning to ask for a while As we all know, the pc version of this is completely whack. There are ways to make it playable, or at least in my case, got it to run the whole way with some fan made fixes. Would it be possible to get a category extension for it? I don't want to ask for it to be on the normal leaderboards because there's even fixes to make it run at 60fps.

A category extension? No, that seems pretty unnecessary for a game with such low activity. Although, I wouldn't be against making a separate sub category for Director's Cut. One without the Fix (PS3) and one with the fix (PC). I probably won't go through with this until more runners speak up in this thread though. Waiting on quite a few of them and it could take a while.

I'd gladly run DP on PC w/the fix if I could get the game to run anymore. I've tried everything known to man to get my PC version running on Windows 10 and I can't get it running.

It keeps asking for a "Sonic Cineplayer Decoder Pack" but I've installed every decoder pack in existence and it doesn't fix the problem. As far as I can tell, that decoder pack goes with some ancient software (Roxio) that used to be included in WIndows and I guess I don't have it. I also can't just find the decoder pack anywhere. I've tried every fan patch, every recommended fix, every solution online I can find and this game will not launch for me.

The only other thing I can try is creating a Virtual Machine and running it in there. I'd actually rather run the PC version as it would be the easiest one for me if I could get it to work. It used to work well on my old Windows 7 laptop but on my PC, I've never got it to run.
